Mitcham Hotel Two Persons Burn to Death.
Athens, Texas, May 2-- Two persons were burned to death and several other were more or less severely injured early this morning when fire destroyed the Mitcham Hotel here. The fire occurred before the guest had arisen and they were awakened and many escaped by jumping from bedroom windows. The origin of the fire has not been ascertained. The dead are: I. D. Lewis Athens, B. U. Davis, Athens. Tom Bird, another guest, sustained a broken leg when he jumped from a second-story window to the grounds. He also received severe burns about his face and limbs. Several others received minor injuries when they jumped from windows to escape the flames. It is estimated that the loss will amount to about $20,000, partly covered by insurance.
This was a 1915 newspaper clipping that is my mother's possession. I. D. is Ira Dabney "Bose/Boss" Lewis, my gg-grandfather who died in 1915.
