ATHENS BOYS ARE ASSIGNED
SMITH GAUNTT RELATES A FEW EXPERIENCES OF THE FIRST DAYS IN CAMP
Smith Gauntt, who was among the nine leaving this county in the
first call, has written the following letter to the local board:
Well, I think I will like the army fine, and it is much better
than the boys there have it pictured. We all arrived at the camp
Friday about 9 o' clock. We were all put through a preliminary
examination and assigned to a division. Beaty Jones, John
Caldwell and myself were assigned to the field artillery and the
other boys were assigned to the infantry. That was the last I
have seen of them. Beaty, John and I are in the same battery, and
Beaty and I sleep side by side. We have been vaccinated for small
pox and typhoid and are all feeling fine.
I was put on kitchen police today, and you should see me wash
dishes and scrub the floor. Everyone has to work so on one cares.
We are getting our clothes right along and you would laugh at
some of the boys saluting the officers. They are so afraid they
won't salute the officers that they salute every soldier they
meet.
Well I have to help put supper on the table, so will write more
later. Tell the rest of the boys to cheer up as it is not half as
bad as they think.
Private Smith A. Gauntt.
