1874 Galveston, Galveston County, Texas The Galveston Daily News page 2 Texas Items. ----- HENDERSON COUNTY. The Athens Times says the county jail is "an incubus and a fraud," and adds: "We trust for the fair name of Henderson County, that the dilapidated old structure will be torn down, and a good substantial jail be erected in its place; one that will hold criminals safe without having sentinels, at an unnecessary expense to watch over and protect culprits, as well as to keep the rotten old hulk from caving in and killing prisoners without warning, and depriving them of the sacred right of trial by jury." -- Litigation and sickness are almost unheard of, and lawyers and doctors look gloomy and despondent. -- The corn crop is made, and, from present indications, the cotton crop bids fair to be unusually good.
