Judge Johnston Names GI To Job

Hubert L. Boyd is Henderson County’s new auditor.

In a statement Saturday morning in the Review, Judge V. M. Johnston
of the district court, who made the appointment, said, "Mr. Boyd has
been highly recommended for his new position. His work as assistant
auditor for the past 2 ¼ years has been very satisfactory. The outgoing
auditor and the Commissioners Court recommended Mr. Boyd without
qualification."

Boyd was made assistant to Gaston Wood, former county auditor,
following his discharge from the U. S. Army in June 1947.

The new auditor was born 38 years ago at the same place where he
now lives, about 5 ½ miles from Athens on Farm Highway 59. He and
his wife, the former Ruth Trammell, were married in 1934 and have
three children, Curtis Wayne, 12, Bobbie Gene, 10 and Karol Lee, 4.

Boyd was graduated from Cross Roads high school and studied for
a year in business school. From 1933 to 1940 he worked as a bus
driver and mechanic at the school, helping out during the summers
with office work.

He spent 10 years as first sergeant in the local National Guard Reserve
unit and was inducted into active service in 1940. He was assigned to
the 114th Infantry in the 36th Division, and two days after the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 his unit was shipped to the
west coast. Boyd remained in the U. S. until January 1945, when his
outfit was sent to the island of Cebu in the Pacific. He was attached to
the American Division, and his was the first infantry unit to land on the
coast of Japan, at Yokohama.

Remaining in Japan until November 1945, Boyd returned to the U. S.
and decided to stay in the Army for 18 more months. Shortly after that
he was reassigned to Japan, working with the 8th Army quartermaster,
in charge of housing for families of the American troops.

When he was discharged in 1947, Boyd held the rank of Major.

The county auditor, Boyd explained, is responsible for keeping all
accounts straight in the six courthouse offices and with the county’s
five justices of the peace. He assists them, and keeps in his office
records of all payments and receipts.

"I’m grateful for the appointment," Boyd said Saturday morning.
"I have no plans to change the auditing system now in use. I’m
succeeding a man who did a brilliant job, and hope to live up to
do it."

Boyd is adjutant of the local American Legion Post, and a
member of the 362nd Infantry Regiment Training reserve unit here.

Gaston Wood, Boyd’s predecessor, resigned last week to accept
a position with the Empire State Bank in Dallas. Boyd’s appointment,
as of December 1, will be effective for a period of two years.

Note: Hubert Boyd was my cousin.
