New Deen Hotel To Open Jan. 21
CITIZENS COMMITTEE TO HAVE CHARGE OF BIG BANQUET AND DANCE FOR
OPENING
Friday, December 21st has been set as the
definite date for opening the new $1000,000 Deen Hotel,
Contractors have assured Mrs. Deen that the hotel will be in
readiness by that date. Work on the second and third stories is
already complete and only finishing touches to the lower floor is
needed to turn the hotel over to the owners.
Mrs. Deen has consented that citizens of Athens may have charge
of the opening ceremonies. In consequence of this arrangement
President Sewell of the Chamber of Commerce has appointed a
committee composed of Messrs. Tom P. Faulk, E. B. LaRue, Winfield
Stirman and R. T. Craig to make plans for the opening and to
appoint such committees as may be necessary.
The committee met this morning and outlined a preliminary
program. There will possibly be slight changes in the
arrangements and these will be announced from time to time before
the opening.
The present plans call for a banquet on the opening night to
begin at 7:00 p.m. The banquet will be limited to 100 people and
a cover charge of $1.50 per plate will be made.
Some prominent citizens of Texas will be invited to make the
principal address of the evening and there will be short speeches
by local people. An orchestra will furnish music during the
dinner hour and there will likewise be musical numbers by several
local people.
At 7:30, while the banquet is being served, the hotel will be
thrown open for inspection by all citizens of the county who do
not care to attend the banquet. Every citizen of the county is
invited to inspect the hotel on the opening night.
At the conclusion of the banquet those in attendance will be
invited to inspect the hotel also. The dining room will then be
cleared and at 10:30 a dance will be staged. Admission to the
dance will be by card as it will be separate and apart from the
banquet.
It is planned that Athens citizens engage all the rooms for the
opening night. As a number of people will want to invite guest
from other cities for the opening these rooms will be engaged by
local people and turned over to their guest.
Tom P. Faulk is chairman of the room committee and anyone
desiring a room for the opening night should make reservations
from him.
W. B. Stirman is chairman of the dance and reservations for this
affair may be made through him.
E. B. LaRue is chairman of the reception committee and R. T.
Craig chairman of the banquet and speakers.
Tickets for both the banquet and dance will be placed on sale
within the next day or two.
