BONAE VIAE CLUB GOT RESULTS IN '14
The Bonae Viae Club was organized on September 1, 1914, for the
purpose of bringing about improvements on Tyler street. The motto
of this club was "Perseverance," and by application of
that motto the club members raised a sum sufficient to gravel the
street within a year's time. Having accomplished its purpose, the
club disbanded.
Officers of the club were: Mrs. W. R. Bishop, president; Mrs. J.
P. Kelly, vice-president; Miss Julia Hawn, corresponding
secretary; Miss Katie Hawn, secretary; Mrs. Ross Phillips,
treasurer, and Miss Mary Hodge, reporter.
Members were: Mrs. J. K. Webster, Mrs. R. F. Williams, Mrs. W. T.
Jenkins, Mrs. R. M. Green, Mrs. L. E. Black, Mrs. W. A. Wofford,
Mrs. J. A. Murchison, Mrs. Robert Hodge, Mrs. Jeff Searls, Mrs.
Thomas Matthews, Mrs. C. H. Coleman, Mrs. George Scroggins, Mrs.
J. J. Faulk, Mrs. H. F. Underwood, Miss Flora McDonald, Miss
Minnie McDonald, Mrs. C. M. Weekley, Mrs. C. A. Spencer, Mrs.
Thomas Matthews, Jr., Mrs. J. W. Murchison, Mrs. E. A. Carroll,
Mrs. J. F. Gilmore, Miss Hawn, Mrs. John Prince, Mrs. Walter
Marrison, Mrs. George Woford (Marrison and Woford spelled this
way in newspaper) Mrs. A. B. Watkins, Mrs. A. H. Easterling, Miss
Willie Hodge, Mrs. S. M. Cain, Mrs. W. L. Faulk, Mrs. Percy
Larkin, Miss Lena Wood, Mrs. Emma Morrison, Mrs. T. B. Wofford,
Mrs. Jack Wofford, Mrs. Conly, Mrs. Jim Peay, Mrs. Tom Graham,
Mrs. L. A. Powers, Mrs. Paul Jones, Mrs. Tom Faulk, Miss Woodie
Reierson, Mrs. Collins.
Almost every property owner on Tyler street was a member of the
club.
Programs were given each Month from October through July.
Highlighting these programs was a debate. "Resolved, that an
oil Tyler street would be more conductive to health and happiness
than the free dust." Miss Julia Hawn took the affirmative in
this debate, while Mrs. Ross Phillips debated the negative side.
Judges were R. E. Yantis, A. B. Watkins, J. J. Faulk, Dr. Percy
Larkin and C. H. Coleman. The affirmative won.
