ATHENS HIGH SCHOOL NOTES
MID-TERM EXAMINATIONS, PROMOTIONS AND EXAMINATIONS FOR 1ST TERM
This week closes the first term of four and one-half months in the Athens school. Thursday and Friday will be used in giving the mid-term examinations. Notwithstanding the crowded condition of the school, a splendid half year's work has been done and the number of failures are few as compared to the same time last year. The teachers are unanimous in the belief that every child who has come regularly will pass. Practically all the failures will be among those pupils who have been often absent from recitation and who have missed a great deal of the class work. The high seventh grade, of some twenty-five pupils, will be promoted to the eighth and transferred to the high school. This will increase the high school enrollment to about one hundred and seventy-five, and will give an extra recitation to each high school teacher. Last year our high school enrolled for the first term just a few over a hundred and now we are getting to nearly double that number. But Athens High School ought to have two hundred and fifty pupils at least, and hopes to have them by next year.
Exemptions
In order to be exempt from examination a pupil must make a general average, upon daily recitation, examinations, and note book work, of not less than eighty-five and must have A in deportment, that is, his deportment grade must not be below ninety. Many of the pupils who are taking the examinations are doing so because of low conduct grades; many other because of starting late in the season. Some because of the lack of former training and preparation for the work, and some because of an indifferent attitude towards the school and of common old no account laziness. The following pupils are exempt in one or more subjects and are enjoying a couple of holidays, as well as having the satisfaction of having done their work well. The first and second grades do not take written examinations and so are not included under the rule of exemptions.
