Athens Daily Review Friday Aug 1, 1947 Committees for New Rotary Year Named by Smith Committees for the new Rotary Club year were announced Thursday by Milton Smith, president. The board of directors includes Mr. Smith; Sam Holland, vice-president, and H. C. Mosley, W. R., VanderMeer, Robert Faulk, Frank Dorsey, Charles Hawn and Roy Morgan. The committees are: W. R. Mrs. Sullivan, Mother of Frankston Woman , Dies Funeral services for Mrs. Amanda Carstens Sulllivan, 73 who died in Jacksonville, were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Tyler with the Rev. A. F. Purvis officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Retreat Cemetery. Among the survivors are her husband, Joe Sullivan of Alto and Mrs. Lonzie Shelton of Frankston, a daughter.
Mr. Pollard, Brother of Mrs. Harlan Dies Mrs. Joe Harlan of Athens attended the funeral services Wednesday for her brother, Ben S. Pollard, 65 who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clyde Watson, in Hillsboro. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Clyde Watson, Petty B. Pollard, Connie L. Pollard and Sam L. Pollard attended the funeral service Wednesday all of Hillsboro; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and three other sisters, Mrs. Will Little of Hillsboro, Mrs. E. E. Gibson of Seminole, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Vertie Pinson of Hillsboro.
Mr. Loosier, Brother of Brownsboro Man, dies Monroe Loosier, 57 brother of Dan Loosier of Brownsboro, died at his home on Route 4, Ennis, Wednesday. Other survivors are his wife; four sons, four daughters, and two other brothers, Base Loosier and Ed Loosier, both of Cleveland, Alabama
Mr. Basham Dies Friday; Funeral Rites Saturday G. C. Basham well known Athens man, died Friday morning at 3:30 o'clock in a Jacksonville hospital following a heart attack. He had been in ill health for some time. Mr. Basham was born on August 9, 1888, in Virginia, and came to Athens in 1917. He was married on June 23, 1922, to Miss Alice Richardson, daughter of Mrs. Kate Richardson of Athens and the late M. E. Richardson, and shortly afterwards moved to California. He resided in that state until 1938, when he returned to Athens. He was engaged in the electrical supply business. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Carroll & Lehr chapel. Burial will be in the Richardson family plot in the City Cemetery. His wife is the only survivor.
Athens Student Is Candidate for Degree Royce June Emerson of Athens is among the candidates for the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree at the University of Texas. The College of Business Administration will confer approximately two hundred degrees at the summer commencement exercises August 31.
LaPoynor Graduate Marries In Longview Miss Lonnie Mae Gilliland of Longview, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Gilliland of Frankston and graduate of LaPoynor High School, became the bride of A. J. Gentry, also of Longview, in a ceremony performed in that city. They will make their home in Chicago, where he is attending the Coyne Electric School.
Browning to Haul 4,000 Pounds of Melons To Buckner Orphans Home. Oscar Brownning said Friday that he will deliver 4,000 pounds of watermelons by truck Saturday to Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas Saturday for John Gibson district manager of the Texas Power and light Company. Mr. Browning offered Thursday to give the melons, which otherwise would go to waste in his field, to charitable institutions. They are small melons and were left in the field when the larger ones were marketed.
Local News Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Henderson of Dallas are visiting friends in LaRue and Athens. Mr. Henderson was a mail carrier at LaRue for several years before going to Dallas. Misses Jennie and Annie Boone, Mrs. Thomas Matthews, and Miss Diane Lawton spent Thursday in Dallas. Mrs. W. O. Loftis and daughter Enid, are business visitors in Dallas today, and will go to Gainsville Saturday to spend the weekend. Rev. and Mrs. Walter Floyd are spending the day in Waco today with friends. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Asmusen, Sr., of Dallas are spending the weekend in the home of their son Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Asmusen Jr. Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Shaw have purchased the W. C. Wilks home on East Tyler Street, and plan to move into the home about the 1st of September. E. E. Cornelius was in Tyler Thursday on business. Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Campbell and son, Dan, are visitors in Dallas today. Mrs. G. H. Ballard and Mrs. Bob Maish are visitors in Dallas today. Mrs. Alan Wilcox and son, Al, will spend the weekend in Tyler with relatives, and attend the National AAU Swimming Olympics. Leon Barron is in Austin on business. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Evans, and daughter, Betty, of Dallas will arrive today to spend the weekend in the home of Mrs. Evan's mother, Mrs. S.J. McCaleb. Mrs. Jack McCool and Mrs. Clyde Nichols are visitors in Jacksonville today. Fred McBurney, Jr., who underwent an operation at the Navarro Clinic in Corsicana last Monday was brought to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred McBurney, Sr., Thursday night, and is reported to be doing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Kamen were visitors in Corsicana Thursady. Miss Joyce Leland Freeman has as her guest Danny Burks of Austin and Miss Joan Hampton of Dawson. Elbert Cox was admitted to the Nan Travis Hospital Wednesday night. His condition is reported to be improving. Mrs. Bethel Dean underwent a major operation at the Nan Travis Hospital Thursday morning and was reported to be resting well Thursday night.
Annual Larissa Reunion to be Held August 6; Program is Planned The Larissa reunion, and annual event for many people in this section of East Texas, will be held at Old Larissa on Wednesday, August 6, E. M. Newton, publicity chairman has announced. G. A. McKee of Jacksonville will be master of ceremonies and Nat Killough of Dallas will be speaker. Dr. N. J. Bone of Jacksonville will give the invocation; Kenneth Dixon will give will give the welcome address, and Miss Joyce Rawlinson of Jacksonville will give a reading Bobbie Butler of Rusk will be on the program, also. The ex- students will hold a business meeting at 2 p.m., with Mrs. Mable Thwaites as speaker on the afternoon program. Mrs. A. K. Dixon of Jacksonville will close the meeting with a memorial speech.
