Athens Weekly Review
March 3, 1932
An item that appeared Sunday in the "Fifty Years Ago"
column
in the Dallas Morning News caused a number of old residents
here to recall one of the biggest fires in the history of Athens.
The article which appeared in the Dallas News in the issue of
February 28th, 1882 was as follows:
"The west side of the business block of Athens was destroyed
by
fire February 27. The total loss was estimated at about $25,000
and
the wind being from the east saved the town. Among some of the
firms destroyed were Jarrell Brothers' drug store, Johnson &
Co.
drug store, J. Williams furniture store, the Athens Journal
office and
Minchull's photography and Watkins' law office."
