Henderson County’s Oldest Native Son, Steve Green Dies

Athens, Texas

Steve Green, 90, Henderson County’s oldest native born resident, was buried Tuesday in the Cottonwood community,
where he was born in 1851. He had never lived elsewhere, although he had led an active life as a farmer and stockman.
He was a son of the late Shade Green, one of the earliest settlers of this section of East Texas. The Cottonwood community
is north of Athens. Mr. Green is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bud Stevens of Cottonwood, Mrs. Lee Ballard of
Cottonwood and Mrs. Dempse Blackwell of Eustace, and three sons, Horace Green of Walton, Weaver Green of Kemp
and Ford Green of Dallas.
