Markers Being Placed At Confederate Graves
Brownsboro, Texas July 1 1940
Twenty-nine of the more than 100 Confederate monuments recently
erected at the graves of Confederate soldiers
in Henderson County may be seen in cemeteries in the vicinity of
Brownsboro, says a representative of
R. E. Sparkman of Italy, here this week
inspecting the graves at which these government headstones have
been placed under the direction of Mr. Sparkman,
authorized correspondent for the War Department in this work.
A list of graves recently marked recall the activities of these
soldiers, many of whom enlisted in East Texas regiments.
Others came from other southern states to rebuild lost fortunes
in this rich new country following the close of the Civil War.
Names of those whose graves have been marked include, James M. Hatton,
D. S. Gregg, George W. Shelton,
James W. Felt, Abe Chapman,
James Walker, W. T. Cole, H. T.
Kirkpatrick, J. S. Carver, Tom Robertson,
W. F. Walker, J. R. Hicks, A.
W. Rice, Sol Clary, J. R. Harbison,
A. J. Runion, Menelius Wesner,
Hassell Chandler, (for whom Chandler, Texas was
named), James A. Boyd, James Coleman,
Henry Carver,
E. Grant, H. C. Cade, John M. Cantrell,
K. Killingsworth, J. M. Worsham
and James Castleberry.
