October 5, 1900
A child of Henry Cooper died at Mabank last week and was brought
to the
Davis grave yard near Athens for burial.
(this paper showed the date of Oct 5, 1900...Im not sure
how the October 7th death was recorded unless it was
suppose to be October 2nd instead, and the paper made a typo)
Died at his residence in Athens Sunday Morning October 7th at 2 oclock
age 55 years, C. H. Thomas. He had been ill only a few days. He
and his
son were engaged in the pottery business here.
George W. Meredith lost a child six or eight years old last
Saturday week.
J. W. Barry sent a copy of the Review to his brother-in-law J. O.
Ashcraft at
Desdemonia, Texas.

J. D. Brown was in the city Tuesday. A child of his died last
Saturday.

Mrs. R. G. Lowe and daughter who have been visiting the family of
Mrs Lowes
brother, Capt. W. T. Eustace left for their home in Galveston
last Monday.

November 9, 1900
Boone Gilmore of Malakoff died Wednesday evening and was buried
Thursday
at Malakoff by the Woodman of the World. A. S. Robbins, J. B.
Murphee, J. R.
Blades and Rev. W. H. Berry attended from the Athens Camp of that
order.
(according to the burial records of Malakoff City Cemetery a
Humphrey L. Gilmore died November 7th and is buried there.
No Boone Gilmore was found).
Married:
In a buggy at court yard fence in Athens November 3, Esq. James
Avriett
officiating. Miss Lola Collins to C. G. Sigler. The contracting
parties were from
Tennessee Colony; Anderson County and came here in order to over
come
objections on the part of the parents.
Married:
At residence of the brides mother in Athens, Sunday at 3
p.m. Rev. W. H.
Berry officiating. Miss Una Dunklin to Mr. J. T. Pledge. The
couple left on
the 4:07 Cotton Belt for Dallas, their future home. Miss Una was
raised in
Athens and is most estimable young lady and is a prize worth
winning. Mr.
Pledge is an engineer on the T & N.O and one of the best in
the service
of the company.
Married:
At the residence of the brides parents in Athens Wednesday
evening at
7:30, Miss Ione Green to Mr. John P. Arrett, Rev. Oscar Ferrell
officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. T. B. Green, one of the Athens
businessmen,
and is an estimable young lady. The groom is one of the
proprietors of the
local telephone exchange and is a worthy young man. There were
several
nice presents.
D. E. Hughes and Miss Otavia Heffington of Hickory Grove were
married
in the County Clerks office on the 1st inst., Judge Freeman
officaiting.

The M & M Club of Athens will give a book reception at the
residence of
Mrs. J. J. Faulk on November 27 for the benefit of a public
library. Everyone
is invited and urgently requested to come and bring a book. An
effort is
being made by this club to secure a public library and it is
thought a fairly
good one can be secured in this manner. Hours 4 to 11 p.m.
A child of T. J. Fuller of Bute community died of congestion last
Friday.
It was about a year old.
John Layton called in Monday and reported that a little babe of
Jack
Watson of Pine Grove neighborhood died Sunday night.
W. P. Speer sends a copy of the Review to his father at Boonville
Arkansas (Logan Co.).
Married:
At the residence of the brides father Mr. J. C. Guynes Sunday
November
12th, Miss Alice Guynes to Mr. Joe Pickering, Rev. M. T. Pace
officating.
A good supper was served and a large crowd of friends were
present. Mr.
Pickering is a well to do farmer of Bute country and Miss Alice
is one of the
leading young ladies of that community.

November 23 1900
A son of Parson Scott of Willow Springs died Monday morning and
was
buried at Post Oak Tuesday. D. D. Lewis of Bute called in Tuesday
and
furnished us the above.

Married:
At residence of brides parents north of Murchison Wednesday
afternoon
21st inst., Rev. J. B. Curry officiating. Miss Jennie Davidson
and Mr. W.
L. Carnes.
Mrs. Marge Martin of the Bute country died last Saturday. She was
quite
old. There were three sisters all advanced in years lving
together. The
county has been supporting her.
Mr. Nat Harrison, merchant at Brownsboro died from jaundice
Thursday of
last week. He was about 60 years of age and had been a citizen of
that
place for about 40 years.

F. M Urrey has sold out at Malakoff and has moved to Dangerfield.
He
ordered the Review sent to him.
Oliver Scott one of the pioneer citizens of Henderson County died
Saturday
and was buried at Willow Springs Sunday with Masonic honors.
Several
from the Athens lodge attended the funeral.
Mrs. Henry Ward died Sunday morning at two oclock after a
lingering illness.
She was buried Monday at Becks Chapel.

A Wedding at Bute
Bute, Texas December 1,1900
One of the most pleasant occasions in this community was the
marriage of
Miss Cuttie Simmons to Mr. John D. Boyd on Wednesday 29th of
November,
Rev. M. T. ??? officiating. The bride is the daughter of Capt.
Jno K. Simmons,
an old confederate soldier and one of the best citizens of the
community.
The groom is an honest, hardworking, honorable young man, raised
in this
community and is highly esteemed by all ???? people. Miss Simmons
is one
of the favorites of the community ??? young lady of most
estimable qualities.
There was an excellent supper served at the brides fathers
and a large
number of friends was present. The next day there was a fine
dinner in honor
of the occasion at the residence of the grooms father. From
there the young
people gathered at Mr. James Simmons and tripped the
fantastic toe to their
hearts content. The occasion will long be remembered as one of
the most
pleasant. Your correspondent thinks there will be several more
such soon.

Miss Cora Freeman of Lovelady is visiting her cousin T. H. Barron
and
family this week.
We regret to note the death of Mrs. Moon, wife of Rev. B. F. Moon
of Canton,
who is a brother of L. M. Moon of this county. She died Monday
night.
F. M. Brown of Carroll Springs died of heart failure last night.
Enoch Fife who resided eight miles north of town died last
Friday.
Grandma Jackson of near Brownsboro died yesterday
morning.
Miss Kate Coleman, after a visit to her sister Mrs. Poynor,
returned to her
home in Dallas Wednesday.
The increase in the population of Henderson County the past
decade is
nearly 66 per cent. The population in 1890 being a few over 12,
000
and in 1900 being 19, 970.

Mr. S. A. Scales of Tolbert Texas spent a few days in Athens this
week.
He was called to see his grandmother, Mrs. Jackson of Murchison,
whose
death was mentioned in the Review last week.
F. M. Brown
Last week just as we were going to press, we heard of the death
from
heart failure of Mr. Brown of Catfish country. Mr. Brown was one
of the
oldest citizens of our county. He was a confederate soldier,
going from
this county in a company raised, we have been informed by K.
Richardson.
He belonged to Co. F of Bass regiment. Mr. Brown was a warm
hearted
man of good intentions and a true friend.

December 21, 1900
Dr. A. A. Johnson a prominent physcian of Malakoff died very
suddenly at
that place Wednesday. The doctor is well known in Athens. Heart
failure is
thought to have been the cause.
Died at Martins Mills Saturday morning at the family
residence, Wilson
Fowler, son of J. T. Fowler. He was ill only 2 days and nights of
black
jaundice. He was 22 years of age.
Married:
At the home of the brides parents in Chandler, Wednesday
evening Dec
19th, Mr. Emmett Henderson of Athens to Miss Callie Dunklin. Mr.
Henderson is one of Athens promising young men, he being the
owner
of the Henderson nurseries.
Married:
At Kerens, Miss Belle McClung to Mr. R. S. Clayton. Mr. Clayton
is one of
our best and most worthy young men. He was raised in the Pine
Grove
community.
D. D. Lewis of Bute called in Tuesday and gave us the news of the
death of Miss Walton.
Mrs. N. C. Murrell and children left Friday to visit Mrs. Murrells
mother in
Mississippi.
S. A. Sneaqd called in Tuesday and reported the death of his
brother-in-law Wilson Fowler.
Miss Rosie Walters died at family residence, near Bute, Tuesday
morning
at 3 oclock and was buried at Willow Springs Tuesday
evening. She was
taken last Saturday with Black Jaundice.
Mr. T. B. Green and Miss Lucy Carlton were married last Saturday
evening,
Rev. L. D. Anderson officating.
