Fifteen Athens Vets Return For Grid Year
Athens Texas
August 20 1938
Their hopes based largely on the fact that the new 1938 Hornets
gridiron eleven will be built principally with lettermen. Athens
football fans are hopeful of a good season in their first
schedule of tilts with the formidable East Texas Oil Belt League
aggregations.
Training for the new season is scheduled to begin Monday, when
Coaches Bobo Nelson and Wallace Johnson will issue uniforms. The
list of prospective gridsters includes three veteran ends, three
guards, one center, five backs and three tackles all of whom won
numerals during the 1937 season. Twenty-five men are expected to
report for training.
After Monday the squad is scheduled to drill twice daily.
The veterans for last year's squad who are back for service
include Wiley Pennell Jr., quarterback, J. B. Scott, Pershing
Huggins and Jake Germany, ends, Leon Christopher, Clinton Chipley
and Mule Watts, tackles; Jim T. Meredith, Hugh Hall and H. Self,
guards; Billy Simmons, center, and Summer Smith, D. Robertson,
Joe Loden and J. R. Dennis, backs.
The Hornets will open the new season with a game here on Sept.
15, the tilt being nonconference affair. Other nonconference
games are scheduled with Riverside and Palestine. Conference
games are carded with Tyler, Gladewater, Marshall, Texarkana,
Kilgore and Longview.
