On Farm to Market Road 1816, 1 mile off highway to the right is Fancherland, founded in
1858, by James C. Fancher of IL. It is listed in 1976 Family Hertiage Book. James C. Fancher
was headed out West when he became taken with East Texas. Acquiring 320 acres on Feb.
15, 1858. Fancher began raising cotton, corn and peas. He constructed his house, barn,
corrals, and out buildings from hand-hewn logs made of timber cleared from his homesteaded
land. He was also a Methodist Preacher.

His son Eli took 100 acres of the land in 1877 and made his livelihood also from the soil. The
family had eight Children and the land passed from Eli's three sons to the J. C. Fancher heirs.
Fancher Melton g-g-g-grandson now owns the land and raises cattle.
