Fredericksburg, Virginia                                                                                                  March 27, 1862

Dear Uncle,

I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know where and how I am.

I am at Fredericksburg, Virginia in the Hospital though I am not sick.  I have been sick but I am now able to go to duty.  We had to leave our winter quarters a few days ago and the Yankees are now in possession of them.  We are expecting an attack, I believe, after the forces are ordered to hold themselves in readiness to march at (anxious warning).  The 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd North Carolina and thirtieth Virginia Regiments left here the day before yesterday for N.C.

I think that this place will soon be evacuated because we are not doing anything towards fortifying the place. 

I have nothing of interest to write you, Uncle.  I want you to write to me as soon as you receive this and let me know how times are in Texas for I have not received a line from anyone scence I left home so you may think I am getting very anxious to here from you. 

Tell Aunt Elizabeth to write to me and to give my respects to all enquiring friends and receive a portion to yourself.
