Comments: John Wiley Jernigan was in the service of the Confederacy
listed as CPL 8th TN Calvary, Co. G,(Smith's).  In 1860 and 1870 he and
his wife, Mel & family are listed on the Rutherford Co., TN census. By
1880 the family had moved to Lauderdale Co. AL.  All of their children
with the exception of the youngest listed on the 1880, Robert, were
listed as born in TN.  Robert, age 1 was born in AL.  Thus the Jernigan's
probably went to Alabama between 1877-1879.  This family moved to TX
around 1884. They may have spent some time in Hill Co. according to the
Henderson Co. History book.  By 1900 John Wiley and Mel are in Henderson
Co. living near their grown son, Jesse.  John Wiley sold his farm in
Henderson Co., TX near his son Jesse in 1907.  He and wife "Mel" as Mary
Melvina was called, moved to Grimes Co., TX near Bedias.  They were
living with their son Floyd and his wife Bell when John Wiley died on
Feb. 12, 1908. After his death, Mel was visiting all of the children, who
were scattered over much of TX. She was visiting daughter Mattie Matilda
in Brady, TX when she died on April 10,1910.  Many of their descendants
are buried in the Carroll Springs Cemetery in Henderson Co.  Their son
Jess and wife LouAnna were prominent in the community. One of the
daughters of John Wiley and Mel, Martha Lillie, lived on North
Prarieville Street and fixed meals in her home for people during the
Depression.  Martha Lillie married Joseph Landman and had three children.
Then she married Wilson Wood and had Clarence Edgar "Topsy" Wood and
Vivian Wood.  Vivian married Welborn Littleton Thompson and settled in
Corsicana, TX.
