Notes for MARY BENTLEY: Mother's bible says that Mary died in a fire. Buddy and Tootsie believe that this is Dad's sister who died in Wichita Falls mental institution. Is it possible she died of fire in the institution? Mother's bible also states that she was married to a man named Web. Census also spells it Web. According to bible, she had a daughter named Marie. The 1920 census of Keller shows in a household John Martin Bentley aged 50, son Henry I. aged 16, and granddaughter Mary E. aged 11. The daughter's name on census appears to be Mary Web but believe this to be an error, and Mother's record to be correct (Marie). Notes for HENRY HENDERSON BENTLEY: In the 1880 census Henry Henderson Bentley and his family are living in Fincastle, Henderson Co. TX. Henry`s occupation is listed as Music Teacher. His wife Permelia played the fiddle, according to her relatives. My dad, Henry S., who is Henry Henderson`s Grandson played no instrument. However, in the 40s and 50s he regularly called square dances in Ft.Worth. He also yodled and loved to sign. Notes for MARY PERMELIA GILBERT: John Martin Bentley death cert. says his fathers name was Henry and was born in Ms. Some census say Ms most say Al. Was his fathers name John Henry ?? Household has Henry Bentley age 22, Permelia(?) age 18, son William age 2, Elizabeth Bentley age 40. 1870: Tallapoosa Co. AL (Youngsville P.O.) p. 24. Household John Bentley age 36, John age 2, Emma age 10. Note: Don't think this is John Martin's father as death certificate says John Martin's father's name is Henry. The Henry H. Bentley family sounds promising; maybe John Martin's confusion about his birthplace is because he had brothers and sisters born in MS and AL, and maybe he really did not know where he was born. I think I have this family in AL, in MS, and in TX. Notes for ALTA ELIZABETH BROWN: Violet Smith, Keller, TX, 379-6008, takes care of Bourland Cemetery. Told me that Alta Elizabeth and John Bentley are buried in Row 3 Section C, plots 51 and 52 beside Farmer and Oldham who are in spots 53-56. Death index lists her as Alta Elizabeth Clinton. Is recorded at Bourland as Alta Elizabeth Bentley. According to Mother`s bible Alta was 1/4 indian. Tootsie says she can believe it, because she can remember her coal black hair. 1886 marriage certificate says Alter Brown. 1953 death certificate says Alta Elizabeth Clinton. Grandmother died in our house in Keller. It must have been a Sat. or Sun. I can remember Mom and Dad and all his brothers being there. Darrell and I were playing outside while the adults waited inside standing around Grandmother , who lay in bed. It must have taken a short while to die,maybe 1/2 to 1 day. Notes for OSIE VINSON BENTLEY: Uncle Otis raised fighting chickens. I can remember going to Uncle Otis`s sometime in the late 40s ,or early 50s, and seeing his chickens. They were beautiful. He pointed out this one rooster that he said he had taken to Mexico and the Rooster won "everything". He said that a man offered him $500.00 for the rooster, but he turned him down. $500.00 at that time, for us was alot of money. I did see some chicken fights,and i saw alot of money change hands. People with $50.00 and $100.00 bills. The fights were very bloody, and pretty awful. The "pits" as they were called were usually back in the woods, on someone`s farm. I have been to these fights even in the woods at Keller, and yes there was a lot of money changed hands even in little ol Keller. I mean hundreds of dollars. The money sure looked good to me , if i just didnt have to watch those poor roosters kill each other. Notes for FRANK R. (HANK) BENTLEY: Worked for the Ft. Worth Parks & Recreation Dept. for 23 years. Belonged to Birdville Baptist Church. Have very fond memories of "Uncle" Hank. He and his dad and possibly other brothers were into fighting chickens, big time. He and a couple of others, I dont remember who, came to Keller when I was in the 6 or 7th grade. They wanted to find a place to ride their motorcycles, in the country and up and down "rough terrain". Well Darrell and I rode with them to the Reynolds farm. We went up to the door and explained what our relatives wanted, and Jimmy "Butter" Reynold`s dad said"it would be OK". I rode behind Hank , and we went up the banks of a tank , well i dont know how fast, but it was too fast. I thought i was pretty tough in those days , but i can tell you , Hank scared the ever loving peawading out of me. I never,never, never, ever had any desire to get on a motorcycle the rest of my life.
