History of Willow Springs

Oldest grave in the cemetery is that of A. E. Pace, wife of M. T. Pace who died 7 September 1873. 
This makes this cemetery as of April 2003 one hundred and twenty five years old.

From courthouse in Athens Texas, take Highway 19 South to
Farm Market Road 59. Turn right and stay on FM 59 until County Road 1200.
(Sign for cemetery is on FM 59, road is right next to Willow Springs Baptist Church)
. Take CR 1200 turn right at the first road you come to..
The cemetery is located down the gravel road on private
property. No permission is needed to visit.

Obituary of M. E. Barr
One of County's Oldest Citizens Claimed by Death 
Mrs. M. E. Barr, 87, one of Henderson County's oldest citizens died at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at the 
home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Trammell, in the Hollywood community. She had been ill for several weeks. 
Her death was attributed to senility and influenza. 
Funeral services were held this afternoon with interment following in the Willow Springs cemetery. 
The deceased and her husband, the late P. C. Barr who died in 1921, came to Henderson county many years 
ago from Franklin county. Mr. Barr had served with distinction in the Confederate Army during the Cival War. 
Mrs. Barr is survived by a number of children and grandchildren. The grandchildren include Burnell Trammell, 
star player of the Hornet basketball team.

Pvt. Bonnie Beard, 1931-1950🇺🇲
Bonnie Beard was born near Cross Roads, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Beard. He served in the Army, 16th Reconnaissance Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division. He arrived in Korea in early July 1950, and was reported missing in action July 29, 1950. His remains were temporarily interred in the United Nations Cemetery near Tanggok, Korea.
Pvt. Beard was re-interred in Willow Springs Cemetery between Cross Roads and Athens. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
