of Athens are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Adkerson died June 2, 2003.
She was born March 3, 1954.
Survivors include her children and spouses, David and Angie Phippis of New Jersey, 
Johnny and Melissa Phippis of Borger, Brandy and Tommy Hubert of Borger and Billy and 
Deanna Heatherwick of Borger; her parents Gene and Lorene Templin of Athens; 15 
grandchildren; sister, Diana Appleton; brother and sister-in-law, Darroll and Penny 
Templin of Trinidad, Stanley Templin of Athens and Ronny Templin of Athens; and several 
aunts, uncles and other relatives.

Services for Peggy Dean Andress, 67, of Athens are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday 
at Dogwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Phil Greenawalt officiating.
Burial will be in Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral 
Home.
Mrs. Andress died May 5, 2001, at her residence.
She was born March 19, 1934, in Athens to the late William Henry and Oatie Myrtle 
Horton Dean. She had been a resident of Athens 43 years, was a graduate of Athens 
High School and a member of Dogwood Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, coach Carl Andress; granddaughter, Sarah 
Marie Andress; and a sister, Mary Hanys.
Survivors include son and daughters-in-law, Carl "Andy" and Sharon Andress Jr. of 
Victoria; Lonnie and Dawn Andress of Athens; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and 
Scott Smith of Terrell and Laura and Tim Coody of Mineola; brothers and sisters-in-law, 
Bill and Mary Dean of Bentonville, Ark., and Dan and Norma Dean of Lake Jackson; sister, 
Jean Caldwell of Athens; grandchildren, Colby, Cullan, Ross, Kaitlin and Carlee Andress, 
Travis, Connor, Shane and Taylor Smith, Hannah and Katherine Coody; and numerous nieces 
and nephews.
Pallbearers are Colby Andress, Cullan Andress, Travis Smith, Connor Smith, Mark Sartain, 
Tony Baccarini, Johnny Andress and Martin Villarreal.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Coach Carl Andress Scholarship Fund at Trinity 
Valley Community College or Dogwood Baptist Church.

Ernest Oran Bass

Ernest Oran Bass
Services for Ernest Oran Bass, 75, of Athens are scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Eubank Chapel in Canton 
with the Rev. Odis Munns officiating.
Burial will be in Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Henderson County. Services are under the direction of Eubank 
Funeral Home of Canton.
Mr. Bass died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in Athens.
He was born March 9, 1923, in Athens to Ammie Oran and Bessie McCarley Bass. During World War II, he 
served in the U.S. Army. He lived most of his life in the Athens area and participated in the Athens Old Fiddlers 
Reunion Contest several years. 
He played steel guitar and fiddle with several different local bands, including Tony Douglas and Little Red Hays, 
and with performers such as Willie Nelson and Red Foley.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Christine Bass, and two brothers, Freeman Bass and Manscelle Willingham.
Mr. Bass is survived by his sons, Elyn Ennis Bass of De Leon and Melvin Steve Bass; daughters, Patsy Janell 
McCarley and Linda Sue House, both of Frankston, Brenda Bass Feuer of Athens and Earnestine Marie Bass of 
Marlin; brothers, Toodle Willingham of Murchison, Lloyd Willingham of Brownsboro, Philip Mayfield of Eustace and 
Bud Willingham; sisters, Layla Cason and Grace Booth, both of Murchison; 19 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday.

Athens Weekly Review July 23, 1931 Jim Black Buried Thursday Afternoon At Shelby Chapel Final rites for Jim Black, about 70, who died Wednesday night at the home of his son, Jess, near Athens, were held Thursday afternoon in the Shelby Chapel community. H. C. Ivy of Athens, an old-time friend of the deceased conducted the services. Interment followed in the cemetery in that community.

Joe Calvin Blackstock

Joe Calvin Blackstock Graveside services for Joe Calvin Blackstock, 92, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Fawell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Blackstock died Jan. 23, 2001, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born Nov. 15, 1908. A resident of Athens for 26 years, he was a founder of the Church of Christ Jesus. He was active at the Athens Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include five sons, four daughters, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nora Bass

Nora Bass Services for Nora Bass, 66, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Bass died Oct. 22, 2001, in Athens. She was born Oct. 22, 1935, to Lowell Allen Frazier and Della Cox Frazier. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lain Bass, her parents, and a sister, Ruth Anderson. Mrs. Bass was employed by Henderson County in the district clerk's office and was named Henderson County Employee of the Year last year. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Athens. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Susie West of Athens, Mark and Donna Bass of Athens, and Wendall and Claire Bass of North Richland Hills; grandchildren, Randy West and wife, Julie, of Athens, Joshua Bass of Athens, Kirianna Bass of Athens, Irinna Bass of Athens, Emily Bass and Zoe Bass; brothers, Weldon Frazier of Indiana, and Benny Frazier of Albuquerque, N.M.; two nieces; one nephew; and her family of co-workers at the Henderson County District Clerk's Office. Services for Jo Ann Crist, 68, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Warren officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Crist died Aug. 27, 2000, in Athens. She was born Feb. 8, 1932, to Jimmy and Holly Tanner Pinkerton. Mrs. Crist was a bookkeeper and a member of First Baptist Church of Athens. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Stephen Crist; and sister, Beatrice Johnson. Survivors include son, Michael; daughter, Susan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marcelle and Thomas Simmons of Athens, Nell and John Register of Athens and Juanice Crawford of Athens; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Maye Cox

Maye Cox passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, surrounded by her family. She was born in 1910 in Athens. Maye was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Thurman; and her sister, Jo Deupree. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jerry Mayfield; son and daughter-in-law Neal and JuDee Cox; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Nell Swinney and Jackie Rhodes; and many nieces and nephews. For over 53 years as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she enjoyed teaching people the Bible. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1912 Hedgecoxe in Plano. Burial will be on Sunday, Oct. 5, in Athens at Shelby Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Preston Park Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1912 Hedgecoxe, Plano, TX 75025.

Thomas Fred Christianson

Graveside services for Thomas Fred Christianson, 60, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Lusk will be officiating. Mr. Christianson died Dec. 27, 2002, in Athens. He was born Aug. 9, 1942, in Palestine to John and Betty Myers Christianson. He was a roofer. Survivors include his daughters, Leann Whatley of Gainsville and Tammy Lou Pester of Pawhuska, Okla.; son, Thomas F. Christianson Jr. of Kansas; sisters, Laura Catherine Ruth of Grand Saline, Lorene Hudson of Malakoff, Eva Baldwin of Shady Oaks and Videau McManus of Athens; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

W. R. Caldwell

Athens Weekly Review Thursday, Sept. 27, 1928 Death Claims Veteran Citizen W. R. (Uncle Billie) Caldwell, veteran citizen of the county, died at the family home east of Athens at 8:00 o'clock this morning. Mr. Caldwell was taken suddenly ill with acute indigestion after partaking of a hearty meal on Thursday noon. Dr. A. H. Easterling was called and found that he was suffering from acute indigestion. His condition grew more serious during the night, followed by a sinking spell this morning and at 8 o'clock he passed away. Funeral services was held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at Shelby Chapel, Rev. A. J. Crawford, former pastor of the Presbyterian church here but now of Nacogdoches, conducted the service. He was assisted by Rev. S. L. Terry, local pastor. Mr. Caldwell was born in Polk county, Georgia on April 17th 1857 and was therefore 71 years of age on his last birthday. He came to Texas at the age of 19 and settled on his present homesite three miles east of Athens on the Athens -m Tyler road. Mr. Caldwell was married to Miss Texana Hall in November 1893, who with the following children survive him: Thomas, Miss Laura and William Caldwell of Athens, Mrs. G. M. Adams of Texhoma, Okla., and Royall of LaTeria. One son, John died at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, during the world war. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Newt Cox of Merit, Texas. Although not a participant in the Civil War, Mr. Caldwell, as a boy was frequently around the Confederate soldier and his heart was thoroughly in sympathy with the Confederate cause. He was an honorary member of the Howdy Martin Camp, Confederate Veterans of this city. "Uncle Billie" Caldwell as he was familiarly known, was a man who numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was a man of strong convictions, and while not seeking office himself, he was active in all political campaigns. His friendship of ex-governor James E. Ferguson began shortly after he entered politics and continued up until his death. Mr. Ferguson was a frequent visitor in the Caldwell home and relied greatly on his political judgment in all his campaigns. W. R. Caldwell was a man of temperate habits, was frugal in his business as a farmer and was a living example in this section of East Texas by using business methods on the farm. Early in life he identified himself with the Methodist church and continued his membership up until his death.

Nettey T. (Wilkerson) Calhoun

Funeral Services held Sunday for Nettey Calhoun Mrs. Nettey T. Calhoun, 79, died at 8 a.m. Saturday in a local hospital. Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Bishop officiating. Burial was in Shelby Chapel Cemetery under direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Calhoun was a member of Central Baptist Church and a lifetime resident of Henderson County. Survivors include two sons, Charles Bruce Calhoun of Athens and Dewey E. Calhoun of Tyler; three brothers Troy Wilkersonof Murchison, W. R. Wilkerson of California and Dewey Wilkerson of Hot Springs, AR; three grandchildren; one great grandchild.

Maggie Lorene (Amon) Davis

She was born Sept. 2, 1909, in Blanket to Joseph and Mattie Kibby Amon. Mrs. Davis was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and Pentecostal. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Mossie Fuller Davis, in 1978. Burial arrangements will be under the direction of Carrol-Lehr Funeral Home. Mrs. Durden died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in the Park Highland Nursing Home. She was born June 23, 1921, in Toccoa, Georgia to the late John Henry and Ada Jane Cheek Cox. A resident of Athens for 24 years, Mrs. Durden was a homemaker. Luther Thomas Eaton Jr.

Mrs. Eaton died Nov. 19, 2000, in Murchison. She was born Jan. 18, 1933, in Dawson to Luther Thomas Eaton and Willie Mae Harper Eaton. Previously of Hawkins, he lived in Murchison for three years. He was in the construction business most of his life. Mr. Eaton was preceded in death by his father in 1963; and his wife in 1996. Survivors include his mother; sisters, Loyce Holt of Seven Points and Elmerene Smallwood of Canton; niece, Marilyn Ficco of Seven Points; and nephew, Robert Templin of Arkansas.

Lillian Beatrice Fisher

Services for Lillian Beatrice Fisher, 74 of Athens are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in the Foster & Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Dr. Grover C. Bishop and the Rev. Jack Burgess officiating. Burial will be in Shelby Chapel Cemetery near Athens. Mrs. Fisher died Tuesday in Lakeland Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born Jan 19, 1912 in the Bethel Community in Henderson County. She lived in Athens for all of her life. She was a housewife and a member of the Central Baptist Church in Athens. She is survived by three sons, Ernest O. Fisher of Athens, Aubrey M. Fisher of Bowie and Dillis Lee Fisher of Alvarado, four brothers, Albert Gartman of Arlington, Glen Gartman of Arlington, Earl Gartman of Clute and James Gartman of Athens, four sisters Georgia Weatherford of Athens, Vera Moss of Athens, Deller Knox of Canton, and Faye Burnett of Athens, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. pallbearers will be Terry Williams, Darrel Easterling, Jimmy Martin, Bobby Hocutt, Mark Attaway, and Jimmy Abney

Minuard Arnold 'Bud' Fulton

Services for Minuard Arnold "Bud" Fulton, 85, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Foster & Brown Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Brian Merchant and Father Sabarimudhu Pancras officiating. Burial will be at Shelby Chapel Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Fulton died Feb. 2, 1999. He was born May 6, 1913, in Henderson County to John T. and Maude Guernsey Fulton. He was raised in the Bethel community. Mr. Fulton married Bobbie Warren in 1954 and was a Methodist by faith. Mr. Fulton was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Hubert Fulton and Albert Fulton, and a sister, Opal Mallard. Mr. Fulton is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bobbie Fulton of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul D. and Glenda Fulton of Athens; one daughter, Shirley Malone of Athens; one grandson, John Fulton of Athens; two great-grandchildren, Victor Fulton and J.P. Fulton, both of Athens; one sister, Eva Henley of Athens; one sister-in-law, Ressie Fulton of Athens; and numerous nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Gibson, Dr. Kenneth P. Burial will follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Featherston died Dec. 26, 2000, in Lancaster. She was born May 13, 1913, in Alba to Arthur Miller and Carah Welch. She was a Methodist. Mrs. Featherston was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and her husband, Cicero Featherston. Survivors include daughters, Paula Mitchell of Mabank, Marla Stegner of Garland and Zona Nell Thompson of Hutchins; 20 grandchildren; five sisters; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Athens and a member of the Rebekah's Lodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.E. Fite, in 1996; and sons, Hubert Lee and Grady Earl Fite. Mrs. Fite is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Robert E. "Gene" and Jody Fite of San Nigel, Calif., and James D. She was born Jan. 10, 1935, in Hubbard to Carlos Marion Pate and Ruby Beatrice Vaughan. A resident of Athens for the last seven years, she was a member of the Lake Athens Baptist Church. Graveside services for Barney Floyd Garner, 73, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Athens with Dan Rogers officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Garner died Dec. 16, 2002, in Athens. He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Seymour to Edgar Hugh and Roxie Lee Williams Garner. Mr. Garner was a resident of Athens since 1989. He was previously of San Benito, where he owned and operated a tractor and salvage company. He was a member of Eastern Hills Church of Christ in Athens. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ida Mae Beavers, Agnus Studer, Oneta Jester and Edwina Hodges; and brother, Ed Garner. Lawrence Gartman

Services for Lawrence Gartman, 73, of Athens were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Foster & Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with the Rev. T. Nowell officiating. Burial followed at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Athens under the direction of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Gartman died June 12, 2001, in Athens. He was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Bethel community to Andrew and Nora Lawrence Gartman. Mr. Gartman lived for 13 years in Bethel before moving with his family to Freeport, where he worked for Dow Chemical as a welder. He returned to Athens in 1946 and was an avid lover of nature and farming. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters. Survivors include brothers; Glenn T. Gartman of Scurry and Earl Gartman of Lake Jackson; sister, Faye Burnett Paxton of Athens; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Arthur E. Gaunt

Services for Arthur E. Gaunt, 74, of Athens will be 2 p.m. at the Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Athens with the Rev. Bryan Adair officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. Mr. Gaunt died March 4, 1999 at the Park Highland Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Pemblin, Pa. to Arthur and Ruth Gaunt. Mr. Gaunt was a resident of Athens for 25 years. He was a veteran of WW II and who served in the Army and the Navy. He was also a cowboy. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Gaunt of Athens, step daughter, Lena Belle Thomas; granddaughters Lisa Pruett of Athens; Kimberly Haley of Mexia; and grandsons, Jimmy Pruett and Homer Bailey, both of Mexia.

Louise Horton Graham

Services for Louise Horton Graham, 83, of Athens are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Christian Church, with the Rev. Bob Tice officiating. Burial will be in Shelby Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Graham died April 18, 2002, in a Paris hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1918, in Henderson County to Everett W. and Maggie Horn Horton and was a lifelong resident of the county. She was a member of Bethel Christian Church and was an avid quilter and canner. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Grady Graham, Jan. 25, 1996. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Barbara Graham, Dallas; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Larry Tinney, Fayetteville, North Carolina; brother, J.D. James Roy Grissom

Services for James Roy Grissom, 65, of Seagoville are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the First United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Darlene Taff and Rev. O.E. Davis officiating. Burial will be at the Shelby Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Grissom died Monday Sept. 7, 1998 afternoon at the Mesquite Medical Center in Dallas. He was born March 11, 1933, in Pasadena to Murle Andrew and Iva Estell Thompson Grissom. While in the U.S. Army from 1953-55, Mr. Grissom served in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his mother, Iva Estell Grissom on Jan. 18, 1997; his father Murle Andrew Grissom, and two children, James Royce Adkison and Debra Levonne Grissom. Survivors include, wife, Patsy Grissom of Seagoville; one stepson and daughter-in-law, Lee Boyd and Stephanie Jones of Odessa; one step grandson, Patrick Ray of Odessa; four brothers and four sisters-in-law, Dee and Connie Grissom of Blossom, Howard and Delores Grissom of Fontana, Calif., Rev. Johnny and Racheal Grissom of Houston, Gaylon and Earlene Grissom of Crandall; and one sister and brother-in-law, Nell and J.D. Simmons of McMinnville, Tenn. He was born Dec. 28, 1968, in Jacksonville to Estol David and Barbara Marie Henderson Grissom. Mr. Grissom was employed at Athens Lumber Co. as a painter. He was a member of the Full Gospel Church. W.W. 'Buddy' Henderson

Burial followed at Shelby Cemetery in Athens under the direction of Anderson- Clayton Bros. Funeral Home of Kemp. Mr. Henderson died Jan. 29, 2000, in Mabank. He was born May 9, 1934, in Houston. He was a member of Phalba Independent Full Gospel Church. Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by sisters, Molly Tyra, Loreane Ganz and Ruth Wilson; and brother, Charles Henderson. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; daughters, Lydia Henderson and Robin Henderson, both of Houston, and Emily Henderson of Mabank; son, Billy Henderson of Houston; brother, Richard Henderson of Houston; several grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Ruth Horton

LARUE - Funeral services for Ruth Horton, 83, of LaRue, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel in Athens, with the Rev. Joe Warren officiating. Burial was in Shelby Chapel Cemetery, Athens. Mrs. Horton died Friday, July 5. She was born in Oxford, N.C., to the late Philip and Ola Burrows Kearney. Mrs. Horton was a retired Army nurse, serving during World War II. She lived in Only, Tenn. for 35 years, moving to LaRue six years ago. Mrs. Horton was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael J. Horton on July 17, 1994; brothers, Ben Kearney and Philip Kearney; and sister, Belle Kearney. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, J.D. Horton, LaRue; a son, Michael E. Kristen Denise Huckabee

Services for Kristen Denise Huckabee, 21, were at 3 p.m. August 10 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Athens with Pastor Rich Dunbar and Bro. Ron Huckabee officiating. Interment followed at Shelby Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Malakoff. Kristen was born December 23, 1981 to David and Stephanie Huckabee and is a graduate of Athens High School and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She also attended Trinity Valley Community College and enjoyed playing in the band. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Select Jazz Band, and served as a Snap Dragon Mentor helping children learn to read. Kristen was also an employee of both, Brookshires #5 and Felipe's Mexican Restaurant. Survivors include her parents, David and Stephanie Huckabee; brother, Steven Bradley Huckabee; sisters, Holley Nicole, Allissa Danielle and Amber Lindsey Huckabee; grandparents, Linda Mingus of Athens and Kenneth and Helen Huckabee of Malakoff and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Arkoma, Okla., to Alfred and Ruby Brown Toon. Mrs. Jackson was a resident of Athens for the past 21 years and a previous resident of Van. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Emma Ruffin; and half-brother, Carol Dean Toon. She was born Aug. 16, 1910, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Andrew Mack and Dolly Musick Rhobert. She was a Baptist and loved crafts and quilting. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert R. and Frances Johnson of Lumberton, Gilbert G.
