Lawrence 'Larry' E. Heffington Services for Lawrence "Larry" Evans Heffington, 42, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Athens with the Rev. Lawrence Culbertson officiating. Burial will be in Athens Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens. Mr. Heffington died at home Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, following a long illness. He was born May 3, 1956, in Morganfield, Ky., to Fred and Ruth Ann Cowan Heffington. A resident of Athens for the past eight years, he served as the county attorney for the past six years. He was president of the First United Methodist Church's Administrative Board and a member of the Athens Rotary Club. He received a bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. After graduation, he taught at Union Kentucky High School, where he also coached baseball. He later moved to Houston to teach at Lamar High School and also coached girls basketball. While teaching, he attended law school at night at South Texas College of Law and was awarded a doctorate of jurisprudence in 1988. It was in Houston that he met his wife, Beth, to whom he was married for 15 years. In 1990, he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of assistant county attorney, and in 1992, he was first elected to the office of county attorney. A member of the State Bar of Texas, he served as president of the Henderson County Bar Association. As of last year, the county attorney's office is credited with collecting more than $1 million in hot check restitution for local merchants. Mr. Heffington served on the Henderson County Juvenile Board and took a strong stand against juvenile crime. He took an active interest in the welfare of the youth in the county. His office furnished materials for the McGruff program, a drug-awareness program for children in grades K-11, and he spoke at various schools on the topic. Along with MADD, his office supplied posters and book covers for all Henderson County school children. He served on the board of directors of the Henderson County Girls Softball Association and coached girls softball for six years, taking a team to the state playoffs in 1996. He also coached girls YMCA basketball. He was an honorary chairman for the 1998 Cattle Barons Ball for the Henderson County Unit of the American Cancer Society. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Heffington, in 1997. Mr. Heffington is survived by his wife, Rosalyn "Beth" Heffington of Athens; two daughters, Victoria "Tori" Marie Heffington and Elizabeth "Lisa" Ann Heffington of Athens; mother, Ruth Ann Heffington of Morganfield, Ky.; brother, Gene Heffington of Lagrange, Ky.; two nieces; and one nephew. Pallbearers will be Mack Good, Melvin Bateman, Judge Matt Livingston, Allen Boswell, Judge Tommy Smith and Jess Laird. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Halbrook, Dr. Richard David, Dr. Marc Abadie and Charlie Hawn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.
