The Antioch Colored Cemetery

Malakoff, Texas

The Antioch Colored Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries located in the Western end of Henderson county on the Yarbee Ranch Road, just off Highway 90, south of the city of Malakoff, approximately 2 ½ miles from town.

The cemetery land was acquired through the following transaction: J.Thomas Henry and Oma Henry, his wife of the state of Texas and Henderson County have this day and by these presents bargain and sell to John Windfield, Wessley Brookins, and Press Brown, acting truste3es for the Methodist Episcopal Church, situated in Henderson County, and known as the New Hope Church, the following described track or parcel of land to wit, 2 acres square lying and being in the N.E. corner of a certain track of land sold to me by J.W. Soot, contain 150 acres and being a part of a track situated in Henderson County o f the state of Texas on the waters of Walnut Creek and known as the Ligon League for the sum of $10.00, that the premises be kept, maintained and disposed as a place of divine worship for the uses of the ministry and membership of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. February 27, 1883, subject to the discipline of said church as from time to time authorized and declared by the General Conference of said Church and the Annual Conference within whose bonds, the said premises are situated.
