Handy, Phalya "Pete" Phalya "Pete" Handy was born May 24, 1926, in Marshall, to Willie Rodgers and Emma Washington. She received Christ at an early age and became a member of Rock Spring Baptist Church in Marshall. She was educated in the public school system in Marshall and graduated from H.B. Pemberton High School. She later attended Tyler College and received her nurse's aide license. She was also a licensed notary public and operated Pete's Income Tax Service. On July 28, 1947, Phayla married Lomar Handy. To this union, a son, Reginald Lomar, and a daughter, Carolyn Annette, were born. Upon moving to Longview, she united with Parkview Baptist Church, under the Rev. J.D. McCoy. There, she joined the Women's Missionary Society and was a loyal and active member until her health failed. Mrs. Handy loved to cook, and she showed her expertise by owning and operating Restaurant Chat and Chew in the downtown area of Longview. She was the Sunday morning radio hostess for the gospel hour for KFRO. Her affiliations included The Snappy 8 Club. Her parents; her husband; sister; and brother preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Reginald Lomar Handy of Longview; daughter, Carolyn (Harvis) Annette Handy-Shepard; seven grandchildren; one sister, Connie B. Davis-Rosborough of Dallas; and one brother, Leroy Mitchell of Longview. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2006, at Parkview Baptist Church, 2014 South Green Street in Longview.
