The REV. LEE MARRINER ADAMS, Rector Emeritus of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Houston graduated into a greater life on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. while surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Paul & Judith Marriner Adams of San Antonio. Mr. Adams was born on Monday, February 28, 1927. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. He served as the rector at All Saints Episcopal Church in Galena Park from 1975 until 1982 and then as the rector at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in east Houston until his retirement in 1989. He also served Episcopal churches in Goliad, Kenedy, Meranrd, Ft. McKavett, Beeville, Abilene and West Point, GA. He was a long-time member of the Lion's Club, the Rotary Club, Toastmasters, the International Seaman's Center, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and the Mom's Diner Breakfast Club. He was awarded the Commander's Award for Public Service by the Department of the Army for dedication to the Army and to the defense and freedom of this nation. His hobbies included books and miniature soldiers. He was an active supporter of the University of Texas at Austin.Hook Em Horns! MARY GUTHRIE ANDREWS, a life-long resident of Houston, was born on October 26, 1968 and died at home on June 30, 2002. Mary is survived by her loving father, Bolivar C. Andrews, and was predeceased by her mother, Janet Guthrie Andrews. She attended St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, Virginia and graduated from Alexander Smith Academy. She also attended Mary Baldwin College. Mary had a special and mutually loving relationship with young children, and at the time of her death was teaching pre-school children at Montessori Country Day School. Mary was deeply loved by her family and will be in their hearts forever. CHARLES W. BAILEY, M.D. Dr. Charles William (Billy) Bailey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and healer passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 17, 2004 in Austin surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 29, 1917, in Aleman, Texas to Dr. Thomas Bennett and Grace Wheeler Bailey and later moved to Brownwood. Billy moved to Austin in 1932 and attended Austin High School where he played in the Austin High Band and served as drum major. During that time, Billy met Mary Love Armacost, also a drum major for the band. Billy and Mary Love married in 1939 and until the day he died, Billy thought Mary Love was the most beautiful woman in the world. Billy graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston. He served his internship at Robert B. Greene Hospital in San Antonio and joined his father in medical practice in Austin in 1942. He attended the University of Texas Law School and received his J.D. in 1966, 25 years after receiving his M.D. He became a member of the Texas Bar Association and a Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine. One of the "greatest generation", Billy volunteered for service in the army and served as a combat surgeon as a Captain with the 29th Division, 116th Regiment in the European Theater from 1944 to 1946. He received a Purple Heart, Combat Medical Badge and a Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. In a Memorial Day tribute to veterans, it was said, "Imagine being a wounded soldier on the battlefield of WWII and looking up into the eyes of Billy Bailey." Billy practiced medicine in Austin until 1985 in general practice and surgery and delivered over three thousand babies. Billy was physician, friend and advisor to Lyndon B. Johnson and the Johnson family, cared for President Johnson's mother and delivered President Johnson's first two grandchildren. Billy served on the Impaired Physicians' Committees of the Texas Medical Association (1987-97) and the Travis County Medical Society (1984 to present). In addition, he served on the board of directors of the Greater Austin Council on Alcoholism and the Austin Rehabilitation Center. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and an elder of Central Christian Church. Billy was preceded in death by Dr. and Mrs. T.B. Bailey, Sr., brother T.B. Bailey, Jr. and wife Juanita, and two sisters Van Enola Chauvin and Mary Wilson Nored. Services will be held Friday, February 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 1110 Guadalupe. Y. hired on with Southern Pacific Railroad in 1978 now Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Locomotive Engineer, a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLE-T) for 13 years, Local Chairman for BLE- T Division #62 for the past 5 years, and a Primary Member of the National Safety Task Force of the BLE-T. FATHER DANIEL RAMSEY BARFIELD, S.J., died Saturday afternoon June 7 at the parish residence of St. Jude Church, Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he had been pastor since 1990. Though he recently had heart surgery from which he recovered, he died peacefully in his sleep. The son of D.R. Barfield, Jr. and Lou Glen Barfield, he was born in Baton Rouge in 1930, and he graduated from Catholic High in Baton Rouge. He attended LSU, 1947- 1951 and was in the Air Force 1951-1953, serving in the U.S. and the Far East. He was in the Law School of Loyola University, New Orleans, before joining the Jesuits at Grand Coteau, LA., in 1957. He did his philosophy and theology studies at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL., and St. Louis University, and was ordained a priest by Archbishop Philip M. Hannan in New Orleans in 1967. He earned an M.A. in English by studying at St. Louis University in summer sessions, 1962-1968 and also studied at the University of London and Oxford. In 1978 he received counseling certification in Houston, where he was teaching at Strake Jesuit College Prep. Until 1985, Father Barfield was a teacher and counselor at Jesuit College Preparatory in Dallas, Jesuit High School New Orleans, and Strake Jesuit College Prep in Houston. In 1985 he became pastor of Holy Family Church in Deming, NM, and in 1990 pastor of St. Jude's in Alamogordo. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Jude's Alamogordo, NM, 11am, Tuesday, June 10 by the Most Rev. Ricardo Ramirez, Bishop of Las Cruces, NM. DENNIS M. BECK, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and son, died on December 30, 2005. He was born June 19, 1945, in New York City. Dennis attended State University of New York at Oswego and South Texas College of Law. Dennis practiced law since 1976, often representing individuals and families that suffered profound loss. Many of his clients have become dear friends and highlight his legacy of empathy and loyalty to those that needed him. Dennis also enjoyed the collegiality of the legal profession and valued his partners, employees, friends, acquaintances and adversaries. Dennis was a "true believer" in the legal system for resolving disputes, and he was not shy about defending his colleagues, the judiciary, and the profession. Dennis loved golf, and he was never at a loss for a foursome. For many years, Dennis Beck's Day-After-Thanksgiving Invitational was a cherished tradition at Inwood Forest Country Club. Like his professional life, Dennis tempered the extreme competitiveness of a golf round with humor and sportsmanship. More than golf and the law, Dennis cherished his family. Dennis gave each of his family members the gift of his support, love, and enthusiasm, and leaves us all with a treasury of memories. ADDELLA (DEL) NANCE BERRY - 82, died peacefully at her home in Houston on March 31, 2006, with her husband holding her hand and two of her three children present. Del was born on May 19, 1923, in Los Angeles, CA as a twin to Clarence and Isabelle Nance. Del and her husband met as young people at church in Indio, California, attended Coachella Valley Union High School, and then the University of California Berkeley together. She received her BS degree in Nursing from the U.C. Nursing School in San Francisco. She was an accomplished surgical nurse and for many years was both nurse and office manager for her husband and son's Aerospace Medicine practice. She courageously accompanied her husband to visit all the continents, and has many friends throughout the world. She was most proud however, of the wonderful, and most loved family which she started, and who have surrounded her with love. She was preceded in death by her parents. JANICE J. MACKINNON BERRY, born on August 7, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa to Malcolm MacKonnon and Ethel McMahon, left us on December 25, 2001. Jan graduated from the University of Houston with Bachelor and Masters degrees in English literature, with honors. She used her seemingly unlimited knowledge at several businesses, including Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago; the St. Louis Dispatch; Kansas City Star; a newspaper in the Phillipines; Link Flight Simulations; San Jacinto College; and contributed to the Houston Chronicle. She touched hundred of lives around the world and will always be remembered as a caring and loving person, mother and wife. Jan always gave her love freely, asking for nothing in return. She impressed all with her poise, intellect and quick wit. A voracious reader, she seemed to know all subjects from literature to history to art to music to world events to finance to gardening to home design and maintenance, but most of all to people. She touched us all with her love. She was preceded in death by her father, Malcolm MacKinnon; mother Ethel McMahon; maternal grandparents, Ella and William Clausen; paternal grandmother, Myra MacKinnon; aunts, Roma Godden and Evelyn Merchie; uncle William Clausen; and husband Floyd Claunch. JOHN M. BERRY, devoted father of Andrea and Janine, beloved husband of Frances Panchok for 28 years, died at home peacefully and lucidly until the end. He rejoins his parents, Edward and Bridget, brother, Ed, and sister, Mary Rita. Born in Pittsburgh in 1929, educated in Catholic schools, former member of the Society of the Divine Word and ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1957. Served as a missionary in Europe and the Philippines, 1957-1968, was Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at San Carlos University, Cebu City, Philippines, and former faculty member of Xavier University of Louisiana. Alumnus of the Gregorian University, Rome, and The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Laicized in 1973. At the time of his death, he was Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Houston Downtown. His students crowded his office. Friends absorbed his wisdom and listened to his stories. He taught us that life is connectedness, that we are our relationships. He lives on in us as he taught us. Our deepest thanks to all the friends who took care of John and his family over the last year. A special thanks to Eula Hall, who nursed him for the last five months, enabling him to stay at home. WILLIAM BARTON BERRY M.D., age 68, died tragically in a traffic accident on Wednesday, November 19, 2003. Dr. Berry trained and was a Chief Resident under Dr. DeBakey. He also started two heart programs, one in Chattanooga, Tenn. and the second in Pasadena, TX at Columbia Bay Shore Hospital. Most recently he started the Greater Houston Vein Clinic. He was a gifted Pianist as a youth and placed 2nd in a regional competition behind VanCliburn. He is preceded in death by his father, Philip Berry. ROSALINE BURNS, a long time resident of Houston, TX and Pittsburgh, PA passed away on August 8, 2004 in San Antonio, TX at the age of 89. She was a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and a friend to all. Her husband of 32 years, John, preceded her in death in 1970. Rosaline was a long time member and with her husband, one of the founding families of St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Houston, TX. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters Court Queen of Heaven # 1844. She was also very active in the senior citizens organizations of St. Benedicts and the Brentwood Baptist Church where she taught crafts and served meals. She was honored numerous times for her service to the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, but her most cherished award was her certificate of appreciation presented in 2000 by Bishop Fiorenza. Birdie married Newton Clark on June 18, 1935. Newton and Birdie joined the First Baptist Church of Galena Park in 1948. For the next 25 years she served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent in the children's department and with Newton cooked breakfast for the bus ministry for several years. She and Newton planted many of the shrubs and plants around the church. Birdie dearly loved her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She loved to garden and took great pride in her accomplishments with growing orchids. She and Newton received the beautification award from Galena Park several times throughout the years. Birdie was preceded in death by her husband, Newton, her parents, one son, Jerry Lynn; brothers, Charlie Brent and Walter Brent and sisters Omie Sterling and Jewell King. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi. Charles has been employed with Universal Weather & Aviation, since 1987, working in Flight Operations for corporate aircraft worldwide. His position allowed him to accompany "Operation Smile" to Columbia, Brazil, Morocco, and Romania. Charles was in Sydney for the 2000 Summer Olympics, coordinating and handling corporate aircraft attending that event. ROBERT JOE CLARK, 84, was born in Houston, Texas on May 26, 1917, and passed away March 7, 2002. He graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1936 and became a member of Houston's first police academy in 1939. A second generation Houston Police Officer, Joe, as his co-workers affectionately knew him, worked in radio patrol, accident investigation, homicide, robbery, juvenile, vice and narcotics. He began his police career on downtown foot patrol, attained the rank of Detective in 1943, Lieutenant in 1945, Captain in 1953 and Inspector in 1956. A no nonsense career officer with strong moral values, Joe was highly respected by the rank and file police officers and other law enforcement agents. He served the City of Houston proudly for almost 40 years, attaining the rank of "Acting" Chief of Police in 1975 and retired as Deputy Chief in 1979. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Dorothy Clark, sister, Dorothy Crawford, and brother, Terrence. Reflections On The Life Of Mrs. EMMA LEE HARRIS COLE Emma Lee Harris Cole was born November 22, 1922 to Mr. J. B. Harris and Mrs. Lunacy Lilly Harris in Shady Grove Gary, Texas in Panola County. She was the fourth child of fifteen (15) children. Emma entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 19, 2005. Emma Lee confessed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at a very early age and was baptized at the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gary, Texas. Emma served faithfully in the following churches: Mt. Corinth Baptist Church, Hempstead, Texas, Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church and the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. Emma was a member of WABC Family Group #38. She worked in several organizations at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and attended Church regularly until she became ill and was moved to San Antonio, Texas. She attended the Public Schools of Shady Grove Gary, and graduated from New Salem High School on May 27, 1941. Emma attended Prairie View A & M University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters Degree with a major in Home Economics. Post graduate studies were pursued at Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, Texas Southern University and University of Houston, Houston, Texas. While at Prairie View A & M University, Emma met and married, on March 23, 1951, the love of her life, Dr. Robert Vernon Cole, Jr., who preceded her in death. They were blessed with three special children, a son, Joseph Cole and twin daughters, Jeannette and Annette Cole. As an Educator, Emma Cole indelibly touched and positively affected the lives of thousands of children while teaching at the following schools; Gary Elementary School, Atlanta, Georgia, Wharton, Texas and Sam Houston High School in Houston Independent School District, where she retired after thirty five (35) years of service. For four years, Emma served as County Home Demonstration Agent, Cass County in Linden, Texas. In 1979, Emma was inducted into the Top Ladies of Distinction, a national professional and humanitarian organization. She made notable contributions through her membership in the American Home Economics Association, National Education Association, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Eastern Star, National Women of Achievement, Inc., Houston Retired Teacher Association, and the Prairie View A & M University National Alumni Association in which she was a life member. TYLER NICHOLAS DAVIDSON 1987 - 2003 Tyler N. Davidson, age 16, was officially pronounced dead the morning of June 12, 2003. Prayers and hopes for his survival had been going strong since an accident occurring the night of June 7th. CYNTHIA FORESMAN DAWSON, 51, passed away on January 4, 2006, in Sugar Land, Texas. Cindy, the daughter of David Foresman, was born in Greenville, Mississippi and grew up in Greenville and Jackson. She graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Business Administration. She was also a Certified Public Accountant. Cindy had a very successful career in financial management that spanned 20 years with two major oil companies. In late 1998, she chose to direct her full energies to her daughters. She was a Sunday school teacher, soccer coach, team mom, Destination Imagination coach, Junior Achievement instructor, Brownie leader, cookie mom, schoolvolunteer, fundraiser, carpool driver and stayed very involved in her children's lives in numerous other ways. Cindy was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. Cindy was loved by many. She made friends easily and retained those friendships throughout her life. Her battle against cancer consumed much of her last four years, yet she laughed frequently, entertained often and very much enjoyed the company of her many friends. RAYMOND LEE FERGUSON, JR., 49, went to be with the Lord on May 24, 2006 after suffering a massive heart attack. Raymond was born November 13, 1956 at San Jacinto Methodist hospital in Baytown, Texas. Those who knew Raymond will remember him as a genuine and generous friend, one who was always a man of honor in all his business dealings, who took life's blows in stride by relying on his strong faith in the Lord. He was generous to a fault, always willing to help others. He loved his family with all his heart, especially his children and grandchildren. They were the world to him. Attending Junior High at The Florida Air Academy in Plantation, Florida, Raymond was elected class President and Athlete of the year, and early indication of his future leadership abilities. Raymond started his own contracting company, Ray Ferguson Interests, when he was just 21 years old, experiencing all the highs and lows characteristic of the contracting industry in the 28 years he was involved. Raymond was a participating contractor in such Houston landmarks as the Jesse Jones Fountain. He was also a major contractor for the city and county parks and for school projects in many of the surrounding area school districts. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Lester Ferguson; grandmother Geraldine Dahl; aunt Sandra Benedict; granddaughter Tiffany Deann Ferguson; step-brother Brian O'Rourke. MICHAEL E. FRANKLIN Mike Franklin, age 47, died May 14 following a long and courageous battle with lung disease. He was a big man who lived large, loved fiercely, and played hard and fast. Although his life was too brief, he would remind us, "It's the quality of life, Baby". Mike was born in Austin, Texas and was raised in Houston, growing up in the Alief school system and graduating from Alief High School in 1974. He played football, but loathed running, so at an early age he discovered his lifelong love of golf. Quite the entrepreneur, Mike was a third generation restaurant owner, and opened his first eatery in a bowling alley, frequently feeding his friends and teachers for free. Thus began a lifetime passion of generosity to others and feeding "the multitude". Mike began his career in the food industry as a busboy working for his grandfather, Charlie Lung, at his La Fonda and El Charro restaurants. Later, Mike managed a Furr's cafeteria, owned Chez Orleans and Texas Charlie's restaurants, and assisted his mother in opening Cactus Jack's in Hempstead and his aunt in bringing Texas Charlie's restaurant to New York City. His love of food led him to work in the restaurant realty business and in manufacturing Mama Rizzo's marinara sauces. The oil industry became Mike's second career, He started out in the early 1980's by selling pipe at Yamin Oil Supply and launched his own Interline Tubular Corporation. With help from his friends and his own keen intellect, he learned the business of oil and gas trading, and founded Products Trading Corporation. Mike was preceded in death by his grandfather and grandmother, Charlie and Margaret Lung, and his step-grandfather, Jewel Franklin. The family would like to thank Drs. Haque and Razzack and the wonderful staff at West Houston and Memorial City ICU's, and especially the caregivers at Select Specialty Hospital for their love, prayers and support. JAMES JOHN (Jim) GALLAGHER, SR., 67, died February 16, 2006 in Houston. He was born in Brooklyn to John Henry, Sr. and Bertha Muriel Gallagher (nee Coy). Jim had a 20-year career with the Suffolk Co. (Long Island) Police Dept., retiring in1983 with the rank of Detective-Lieutenant. He held a BSc in Criminal Justice Administration and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Jim was also the founding drum-major of the Department's Emerald Society Pipe Band, and marched in the legendary New York City St. Patrick's Day parades. He was a member of the Police Superior Officers Association and the International Police Association. In retirement, Jim was a security consultant and instructor, a trainer and logistics coordinator in Disaster Services for the American Red Cross. Throughout his life he had striven to live by his motto, "to protect and to serve." Jim is preceded in death by parents and brother, John Henry, Jr. Jim was a mischievous soul, a lover of Irish folk music, an enthusiastic culinary experimentalist and an avid collector of collections. MARY THERESA HURLEY, 86, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2006 with her family at her side. As a mother and a wife, Mary was one of the most loving, kind, intellectual and dedicated women God ever created. She opened her heart and her home to at risk youths. Mary treated everyone she met as a sister, brother, son or daughter regardless of their background. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, Mary immigrated to Boston with her family as a child. She studied at Boston University and the New England Conservatory of Music becoming an accomplished pianist, singer and artist. Mary retired from the accounting profession and built a retirement home with her husband, Pete, in Pace, FL where they enjoyed many happy years together. THOMAS WILLIAM HURST of Houston, Texas died peacefully in his home Wednesday, February 8th. 2006. He was born June 18, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in San Diego. Tom discovered a love for scuba diving and became an instructor for Iowa State Skin Diving Schools in Des Moines. Tom logged over 2600 dives in his lifetime. He was a natural at the art of sales and was a strong asset to any team he worked with. He was a pioneer in the field of windsurfing and scuba diving equipment sales. He introduced wind surfing as a popular sport by heavily promoting it throughout the Gulf Coast. He helped produce an award winning PBS documentary "River of Innocence - the Story of the San Marcos River." He also briefly worked in the industrial valve business, and had an interest in computers which led him to the IT industry, and for the past 5 years he worked at CTREC Computer training of Houston. His loving charm, keen sense of humor, and his ability to make people comfortable is what gave Tom so many lifelong friends. LAWRENCE EDWARD JACKSON, II was born November 10, 1978 in Houston, Texas, to Lawrence and Hazeline Jackson. He was a wonderful baby, easy to spoil and love; smiled all the time and wanted to make others smile too. Lawrence was very studious and began reading at the age of three. He possessed the gift of music, becoming an accomplished pianist, flutist and saxophone player. When he was in the third grade at Lovett Elementary School, he joined the symphonic band, and his boxer, Bruno, was the unofficial mascot. During his elementary years, he took karate, swimming lessons and became an excellent swimmer. Lawrence was a very active member of Windsor Village UMC. He sang in the children's choir, was an acolyte and attended Sunday School. At the age of twelve, Lawrence confessed his life to Christ and completed Confirmation Class. Lawrence attended Johnston Middle School, a magnet school for music. Due to the family's relocation, he also attended First Colony Middle School. He continued his study of music, swimming, karate, and added tennis to his activities. Lawrence needed more activities so he joined the local Boy Scout Troop and earned numerous badges and learned many life long lessons of survival, camping techniques, archery, snorkeling, kayaking, and many other activities. Lawrence graduated from Elkins High School, where he was an active member of the marching and concert band, and acquired the command of the Spanish language. After graduation, he enrolled in Southern University (Baton Rouge, LA), where he was a proud and soulful member of the "Human Juke Box" Marching Band. Lawrence earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with a specialty in Marketing. Upon his return to Houston in 2000, Lawrence was employed as a sales representative by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and later as a claims adjuster for State Farm and Progressive Insurance Companies. As a testimony to his gift of caring for those less fortunate, he traveled to the state of Florida in the aftermath of the 2004 series of hurricanes to utilize his knowledge and skills to aid the people affected by the devastating storms. This act of compassion was just another example of his kind heartedness and caring spirit. When Lawrence returned from Florida in January 2005, he was employed as a licensed agent at his mother's Allstate Insurance Agency... Having developed a take charge attitude and business acumen for entrepreneurship, Lawrence approached each day energized for success. Lawrence was a God-fearing man and a well mannered individual. He always lived his life to the fullest. He knew God as the master of his faith and the captain of his soul. Lawrence spent his life enjoying his loves: family, friends, music, and his automobiles. He was a happy soul, energetic, full of passion, charisma and drive. Lawrence was his brother's keeper. He was very outgoing, never met a stranger and immediately became their friend. He challenged himself daily to succeed, to perform any task to the best of his ability, and strived to do it right the first time. MONIQUE YVONNE RICHARD LANIER Monique Lanier of Beaumont, Texas died at the age of 86 Thursday, June 24, 2004. She had been living and undergoing medical treatment in Austin, Texas for the past few years. She was born in Paris, France, on September 19, 1917. In France she served in the French Resistance (FFI) during World War II. She received numerous combatant commendations, including the French Croix de Guerre, the French Resistance Medal and the Cross of the Combatant Volunteer of the Resistance, for her active participation in the resistance against the German occupation of France as well as her exemplary conduct when captured and tortured by the German Gestapo, which resulted in her near death and permanent physical impairments. She met her future husband, Elmo E. Lanier Jr., a member of the 101st Airborne Division, after the liberation of Paris. They were married, on October 22, 1945 and came back to Texas, where she became an American citizen. Her body is being cremated and no formal services are planned prior to returning her ashes to her homeland where they will be scattered as was her last wish. She was a French partisan who never forgot that thousands of Americans risked and gave all their tomorrow's for France's liberation and her freedom from the tyranny of the Nazis. WILLIAM HOWARD "BILL" LANIER, born August 23, 1932, in Palestine, Texas, passed away February 1, 2004 in Houston, Texas. Bill graduated from Palestine High School in 1950 and was inducted in the Palestine High School Football Hall of Fame in 1989. Bill served in the U. S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 on the U.S.S. Pocono, and did reserve duty until 1960. Bill graduated from North Texas State University in 1959, but in his heart was always a Longhorn. Bill worked from 1950 to 1988 for Texas & Pacific/Missouri Pacific/Union Pacific Railroad and was Man of the Year for the Rochester Railroad Association in Rochester, New York. Bill lived in Lubbock, Texas from 1972 through 2000 where he was a member and class chairman at Broadway Church of Christ, a volunteer at the South Plains Food Bank, and was active in the Lubbock Community Theater. Moving to Houston in 2000, Bill was a member of the Bammel Road Church of Christ as well as the Lanier/Miori Sunday School Class at Champion Forest Baptist Church. Bill volunteered at the Potter's Wheel and was an avid bridge player, known internationally. Above all, Bill loved his faith, his family, and his country. MARJORIE LENTON YOUNG LEATHERWOOD, passed peacefully and confidently, to her next life on May 16, 2006. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernest Masters Young and Blanche Beatrice Outerbridge Young, her sisters Rachel Young and Rose Post, her brother Ernest Masters Young Jr., and her husband of 57 years, Vernon M. Leatherwood. Margie was born in Bermuda on October 12, 1919. Her family dates back to the original English settlers of the Islands, arriving in 1620 from England. She met her husband, Vernon in Bermuda when he was working there prior to World War II. They married in Bermuda and were stationed there during the war. In 1945, Vernon brought Margie to his home in Dallas, Texas. Margie, Vernon and their three boys moved to Houston in 1958. Margie treasured her husband, her sons and their families, and her home and family in Bermuda. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church and enjoyed working in various church activities. She also was active in various neighborhood civic and garden club activities. Margie's warmth and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her. CARLENE RHODES LEWIS, 51, of 615 Saddlewood, Hunter's Creek Village in Houston, passed away on Monday at M.D. Anderson Hospital. Carlene was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 28, 1954, and grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia. Carlene went to Harvard University, where she graduated cum laude and was a member of the Varsity Club. After teaching at Hodgkiss, a prestigious private secondary school in Connecticut, Carlene went to the University of Virginia where she obtained her law degree and was a member of the Raven's Society. Throughout her school years and even later, Carlene was very active in sports, including field hockey, soccer, rugby, softball, ballet, running marathons and lacrosse. Carlene moved to Houston in 1984 and began her law career at the law firm of Sewell and Riggs. In 1989, she founded the law firm of Goforth Lewis LLP with her partner Daniel Goforth. The law firm has grown through the years and is now the national law firm, Goforth Lewis Sanford LLP. Carlene was a voracious reader, and accomplished pianist. In 1988 Carlene married Greg Lewis of Houston. Greg and Carlene have two daughters, Carla (16) and Christy (15), both of whom attend Memorial High School. The constant focus of Carlene's life was Carla and Christy. She taught them in Sunday School, she coached them in soccer, she went to Houston Comets games with them, and she worked on their homework every night. Carlene spent her life encouraging the girls in their academics, athletic and social life. Watching the girls compete in athletics or academics was a huge source of joy for her. Carlene rarely took a business trip or accepted a social invitation where the girls could not come with her As a result, the girls traveled with Carlene many times to places throughout the world. In Carlene's law practice, she was dedicated to defending the rights of consumers. Carlene worked for many years on products liability defense, but in the last half of her career was involved solely in plaintiff's litigation. Carlene worked on various cases, including the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire cases, arsenic spills, oil and gas abandonment and benzene contamination. In early 2000, Carlene began litigation against the laxative industry for their promotions of laxatives to minors and people who were led to believe they would work for weight loss. Her work resulted in public disclosure by manufacturers that this was dangerous and not true. Carlene is widely known to have begun the litigation against Merck and Co., Inc., relating to the pain medication Vioxx. Carlene worked with fierce dedication toward getting this drug removed from market because of its dangers and the dangers of other similar drugs. While this was successful, the litigation relating to injuries is ongoing. Carlene had the honor of being appointed as a member of the Plaintiff's Steering Committee for the national Vioxx litigation, as well as the national litigation involving Bextra and Celebrex. It was a great joy for Carlene, professionally and personally, to work with the lawyers who were appointed with her to these committees. It is without doubt that Carlene's efforts played a large role in exposing the dangers of these products and their removal from market. Carlene was trial counsel with her friends Mark Lanier and Shelly Sanford on the first Vioxx case to go to trial in the country. That case was the first victory for Plaintiff's in this litigation and resulted in a punitive damages award against Merck for their misrepresentations in the marketing of Vioxx. Carlene has been nominated with Mark and Shelly for Trial Lawyer of the Year through the Trial Lawyer's for Public Justice national organization. Carlene is a life fellow of the Houston Bar Association, is a member of the Texas Trial Lawyer's Association, and the Association of Trial Lawyer's of America, where she gave many speeches. Carlene's medical care was provided by the staff and nurses at M. D. Anderson and Dr. Michael Bevers of St. Luke's and M.D. Anderson. Carlene was preceded in death by her father, Carl Peace Rhodes. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 9, at 3:00 pm at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston. The eulogy will be given by long time friend, pastor, and colleague, Mark Lanier. JAMES OTIS LEWIS, JR., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on June 2, 2006. He was born on July 6, 1922 in Owensboro, Kentucky to the late James Otis Lewis, Sr. and Mary Shaw Lewis. He attended high school in Fulton, Kentucky and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1947 and a MS in Geology in 1949. From 1943-1947 he fought in WWII while serving in the US Navy. After graduation in 1949, he moved to Houston and worked for Magnolia Petroleum Company and P.R. Rutherford. In 1955, he started his own consulting practice, focusing on geology of the Gulf Coast and southwest Texas. He was devoted to his profession and its associations. He was president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (1989-1990), the Houston Geological Society (1968-1969), and the Society of Independent Earth Scientists (1967-1968). He held Honorary Life Memberships in these organizations, received several Distinguished Service Awards, chaired numerous conventions, and remained involved in these organizations' leadership throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his wife Gwinn McMahan Lewis and his sister Jane Haynes. He loved West Texas, traveling there often, and his weekend home in Washington County. He was an avid pilot, handball player, and carpenter. A Memorial Reception will be held at his home on Thursday evening, June 8th, at 6:00 p.m. The family asks that donations be made in lieu of flowers. JEANINE EMINIAN LEWIS, 76, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2005. Freelance writer/editor and former reporter for the Houston Post and Brazosport Facts, her career included: Gal Friday for Bill Roberts' column and radio show; The Drug Scene series; editor of Key Magazine and the Houston Spectator; assistant editor, Texas Preview Magazine. Former Chairman of the Brazoria County Republican Party and active in the John Tower, Barry Goldwater and Ron Paul campaigns, among others. Past publicist for the Keep Brazoria County Beautiful Association and active in many other charity and civic affairs. Colonel, Stephen F. Austin High School's Scottish Brigade; past President, Delta Zeta (UT) and editor of The Lamp. Graduated University of Texas - Austin with high honors. Created Aunt Gigi's Candy House Kit. MARGARET E. LEWIS, 76, of Spring, Texas entered into heaven's gates to be with the Lord on May 26, 2006. She was born March 20, 1930 in Kaufman, Texas and a resident of Houston for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Russell L. Lewis in 1986. She was a longtime faithful member of Garden Oaks Church of Christ and leaves behind a wonderful loving Christian family. SARA LANSFORD LEWIS, a third generation Houstonian, passed away Sunday, January 26th, 2003, at the age of 80. She was born July 2, 1922 to Vernon and Velma Lansford, whom preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Bailey S. Lewis. She retired from Houston Lighting and Power Company in 1987, after 33 years in customer service.
