SOUTHERN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

This church was organized in 1873, the year that Gregg County was formed.  A plat of land at the corner of Center and Methvin Sts was donated by the Texas and Pacific Railroad on November 17, 1873.  Dr W K Marshall is given credit for the organization of this church.

Charter members were:

R B Levy and family; late from Virginia
Davis family
Mr & Mr E H Carter
Mrs T A Flewellen
Dr & Mrs Trent
Judge and Mrs Witherspoon

Others that joined soon after were:

Mrs T M Campbell- mother of Governor T M Campbell
Mrs Henry Smith
Mr & Mrs A A Womack
Dr and Mrs C W Lawrence
Dr DeLoach
Mr & Mrs Briley

Dr Kirkpatrick, a highly educated minister born in 1808 in Virginia, served the church as it's first pastor part time.  Next came Reverend J H Wiggings   1874-1880.  He gave part time at a salary of $30.00 a month.  He was followed by Reverend J C Buchanan who served for a short time in 1881.  Charles J Heiskell came next  1881-1883.  He wa also a part time preacher.  It was during his pastorate that the Ladies Aid Society was organized with Mrs E H Carter, Mrs R B Levy, Mrs Hattie Oney and Mrs J M Duncan as members.

Dr Burkhead was pastor for a short time and was succeeded by Reverend James W Saxton, 1885-1890. Mrs. Saxton was a sister to Honorable Tom Ball of Houston.

Reverend R M Tuttle served from 1890-1894.  He had been a confederate soldier.  He organized the Elderville Church..

Reverend S M Tenny came to serve from 1894-1899.  He married Mary McWhorter.

Reverend George H Steen served part of 1900.

Reverend Thomas F Gallagher, of Missouri, served 1902-1906.

Reverend J S Baird 1907-1911

Reverend J F Caughly, of Ireland, 1913-1916.

Reverend Thomas L Green 11918-1921

Reverend R M Hall 1921-1925.
