CREMATION OR CEMETERY - LIVED IN LONGVIEW


DeWard DeWitt McDonald, M.D. passed away at his home on April 13, 2015. Born on September 7, 1928 to Geneva Mae Brown McDonald and Thomas Abe McDonald in Forney, Texas, he grew up in Burkburnett, Texas. After graduating early from high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he met and married Addie Fish on September 2, 1950 at the University Avenue Church of Christ in Austin, Texas. After graduation from UT Austin in may 1951, he went on to attend Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas and graduated in May 1955. He pursued his internship and residency as a naval officer through the U.S. Navy’s U.S. Public Health Service in Staten Island, New York and Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. McDonald moved to Longview in 1959 and served the community as the County Health Officer for Gregg County, while beginning his private practice in general medicine which he was fortunate to continue until age 82. He and Addie were involved in their church and community, while raising their children. Dr. McDonald served as the football doctor for Judson High School until its consolidation with Longview Independent School District in 1967.

While he had many interests, loved learning, enjoyed travel with family and friends, cheering for the Texas Longhorns and Longview Lobos, his favorite role was being “Gramps” to his three granddaughters whom he always referred to as his angels. He loved spending time with them and spoiling them as only a grandparent can. 

Dr. McDonald was predeceased by his wife, Addie, in 2008. He is survived by his children, Tisha McDonald and Michael McDonald, both of Plano, Texas and Dr. Glenn McDonald and his wife Shelly of Longview, Texas and his three beloved granddaughters, Sophie, Hannah and Olivia.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Rader Funeral Home located at 1617 Judson Rd in Longview.
