Kinsey, Viola King Lipscomb

KILGORE - Services for Viola Kinsey, 97, of Austin, will be 2 p.m. Monday, 
May 21, 2007, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Kilgore, Texas, with 
the Rev. Ernie Turney officiating. Mrs. Kinsey died Thursday, May 17, 2007, 
in Austin, Texas.

She was born November 19, 1909, in Kilgore, Texas, where she spent her early 
life. Her parents, Asbury Alexander King and Lottie Whittington King, were 
pioneer East Texans in the cotton and oil businesses.

Mrs. Kinsey graduated from Longview High School and Texas Women's University, 
continuing graduate studies at the University of California at Los Angeles 
and the University of Colorado at Boulder. While teaching at Longview High 
School, she met Robert Dabney Lipscomb of Dallas, representing the Mark 
Lemmon Architectural Firm, which was building a new high school on Whaley 
Street. They married in 1933, and made their home in Kilgore, Texas, where 
Dabney Lipscomb died in 1954. In 1957, she married Hollis Kinsey, a Pepsi 
Cola bottler, and moved to his home in Tupelo, Mississippi.

She was active at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Kilgore, teaching Sunday 
school and singing in the choir. She was a charter member of the Kilgore 
Garden Club and the Kilgore Women's Club. She helped initiate and perpetuate 
Community Concerts in Kilgore. During World War II, she served as a "Gray 
Lady" volunteer at Harmon Hospital, a military hospital in Longview.

She was active at First United Methodist Church of Tupelo, receiving a 
service pin for her work in United Methodist Women, serving in the altar 
guild, and teaching Sunday school. Also in Tupelo, she volunteered at the 
hospital, for Meals on Wheels, and as a member of Friends of the Library.

Throughout her life, her warm heart, her generosity and her many acts of 
kindness to others have made her beloved by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Kinsey; two brothers, John 
Solon King and Edward B. King; and sister-in-law, Valla D. King.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in law, Lottie and John S. Guttry 
of Longview and Diane and Max Kimmel of San Marcos; a son and daughter-in-
law, Robert Dabney Lipscomb Jr. and Sandra Lipscomb of Georgetown; and a 
stepson and daughter-in-law, Gayle and Linda Kinsey of Tupelo, Mississippi. 
She had nine grandchildren, Melinda Barge, John Dabney Guttry, Robert Byron 
Guttry, Michele Lipscomb, Lacy Vain, Ashley Lipscomb, Troy Kimmel, Kathy 
Kimmel and Lou Kinsey; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and 
nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Methodist Church, Kilgore, Texas; to 
Vistacare Hospice, 7800 Shoal Creek Blvd., Suite 130W, Austin, TX 78757; or 
to the charity of choice.

The family will receive friends 5-6:30 p.m. today at Rader Funeral Home of 
Kilgore.
