Green, Hubert Gordon A memorial service for Gordon Green will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, September 11, 2006, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview. The Reverend Carol Petty and the Reverend Dr. Michael Macey will officiate. Gordon died at the age of 97 on September 5, 2006, at his residence in Longview. The son of Alice and Percy Green of Palestine, Gordon was born October 6, 1908. He graduated from Palestine High School in 1926. He attended Texas A&M University, New York University, and Columbia University. He was an avid supporter of Texas A&M and a longtime member of the Deep East Texas A&M Club. In New York City in 1930, Gordon began a long career with the Texas Co., later Texaco. In 1935, he married Mary Belle Gillespie of Dallas. Over many years, his assignments with Texaco took them to Amarillo, Texarkana, Longview, and Dallas. Upon his 1971 retirement from Texaco as the manager of contractor sales in Dallas, they moved to Lake Cherokee, near Longview. Gordon and Mary Belle traveled widely, often with friends and family. If a faraway place came up in conversation, he had usually "been there." Gordon was a very active, lifelong Episcopalian. At Trinity Church in Longview, he was elected to numerous terms on the vestry and endowment board, served several times as senior warden and junior warden, and participated in the establishment of the Men of Trinity. In addition, he served as a delegate to the Diocesan Council and a member of search committees for three Trinity rectors. For many years, Gordon was the official Sunday morning visitor of every Episcopalian listed as a patient at Good Shepherd Medical Center and Longview Regional Medical Center. Other volunteer duties included serving on the board of directors of the Cherokee Water Co. and the Elderville-Lakeport Volunteer Fire Department. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Percy Green; and his wife, Mary Belle Gillespie Green. Gordon is survived by his wife, Betty Hunt Smith Green of Austin; his son, H. Gordon Green Jr. and wife, Jean Ann, of Dallas; his daughter, Nancy McWhorter and husband, Gene, of Longview; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Gordon's friends may honor him with memorial contributions to a charity of their choice or to Trinity Episcopal Church's All Saints Garden. The address for Trinity Church is 906 Padon, Longview, TX 75601. A memorial guestbook may be signed online at www.raderfh.com. Published in the Longview News-Journal on 9/9/2006.
