Bruce, J.D. 

J.D. Bruce journeyed from his home in Longview to his Heavenly home on May 4, 2006. 
He was 82, having entered this world on December 24, 1923. J.D. and his wife, Jane, 
moved to Longview in January 1953, arriving from the Texas Panhandle in the midst of 
a spectacular East Texas ice storm. He began his new job at Fedway immediately where 
he continued through that store's transition to Dillard's, retiring from Dillard's in 
1987. He then went back to work at Winn-Dixie for a short time until he permanently 
retired in late 1988 to take care of his youngest and newly born grandson so his 
daughter, Carol could continue her job. J.D. and his family began their church life 
in Longview at Mobberly Baptist Church shortly after their arrival and remained there 
through the years except for the 10 years they spent in Gladewater at Memorial Baptist 
Church. Together, J.D. and Jane have spent many years of service to the body of Christ 
in their fellowships. J.D. had a caretaker's heart and spent hours helping his neighbors 
who were older than he. Jane would cook extra so that J.D. could carry a full, hot meal 
in the basket of his three-wheeled bike to neighbors. J.D. Bruce is survived by his wife 
of 62 years, Jane Langford Bruce; his daughter, Carol and husband, Bryan Weiss, and 
grandson, Taylor Weiss, all of Longview; also his daughter, Elaine Shaw of Athens; 
granddaughter, K.-Leigh Shaw of Arizona; grandson, Jared Cleere and wife, Jeri, of 
College Station; his daughter, Sharon Allen and husband, Kenneth, of Palmer Alaska; 
grandson, Timothy and wife, Rachel Allen of Michigan; granddaughter, Tammy Allen; 
grandson, Terry and wife, Megan Allen; grandson, Tedman and wife, Crystal Allen, all 
of Alaska; also his sister, Edna Brewer of Blair, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his parents J.D. and Birdie Bruce and 10 siblings. The 
funeral service will be held 5 p.m. May 8, 2006, at Lakeview Funeral Home. Memorial 
gifts may be made to the Mobberly Baptist Church Building Fund. For those unable to
