Brinson Sr., Edwin Haywood A memorial service for Edwin Haywood Brinson Sr., 91, of Longview, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2006, at the chapel of Rader Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Schulik officiating. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery of Longview. Visitation will be today from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Edwin Haywood Brinson was born August 4, 1915, in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, to Haywood Samuel Brinson and Ruby Mary Lester Brinson. He died at Highland Pines Nursing Center, Saturday, September 16, 2006. Mr. Brinson grew up in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, in the Homer Oil Field community, where he attended grammar school, was a Boy Scout, and enjoyed riding his pony. At Homer High School, he played baseball on a championship team and was quarterback for the Homer Pelicans' football team in the early 1930s. Mr. Brinson had a lifelong passion for sports, especially baseball and football. He was a fan of the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the booster club and for many years, and a faithful follower of the Carthage High School Bulldogs' athletic teams. He was a Boy Scout leader, achieving the rank of Life Scout, and when his boys were growing up, was Little League Baseball coach, and he always had an interest in his children's school life and participated in the Parent Teachers Association. He spent most of his life working in the oil fields beginning with the 1930s oil boom in Longview/East Texas as a field-gauger and retired from the Sun Pipeline Company in the 1980s. Mr. Brinson served as representative and was elected president of the Sun Pipeline Employees Association. Following retirement, he worked for another oil company for many years, until his early 80s. He was a lifelong member and an ordained deacon of the Baptist faith and attended the Mobberly Baptist Church, where he was active in the Faithful Workers Sunday school class. He was a lifetime member and past president of Longview Lions Club. He and Christine attended the International Lions Club Convention in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1981. While on that trip, they went on extensive side trips to Hong Kong and into the Peoples Republic of China. They enjoyed traveling with friends all over the Continental United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. They moved to Longview, Texas, in 1973, and he had resided at Buckner Westminster Retirement Community for six years, until the onset of recent health problems. The family would like to especially thank the staff and associates at Highland Pines for the wonderful care he received. Edwin Brinson and Christine McKenzie celebrated 61 years of marriage together from their wedding day, February 23, 1934, to Christine's death in 1993. He is survived by three children: daughter, Sandra and son-in-law, Everett "Sleepy" Reynolds of Carthage, Texas, Edwin H. Brinson Jr. of Commerce, Texas, and William Douglas Brinson and wife, Glynrose, of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Kate B. and Doyle Gaither, Claire B. and Doug Mangin, Jacob and Ashley Brinson, Leonard Brinson, Hillory B. and Jared Russell, and Amy Brinson. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a brother, Barney J. Brinson and wife, Audrey; a sister, Elsie "Chi Chi" Furman and husband, Ed, of Pasadena, Texas; a brother-in-law and his wife, John Douglas and Eleanor McKenzie of Homer, Louisiana. He is also survived by his dearest and special friend, Frances Dunn of Longview. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Jennie Foreman; grandchildren, Andrea Reynolds, and Amy Reynolds; and his beloved wife, Christine. Mr. Brinson was blessed with a loving family and many friends who will greatly miss him.
