The following information was sent in by Kay Cunningham, the great granddaughter of Arthur Lee Connor, Sr. He was b. July 21, 1885 and d. Feb. 4, 1943. There were no dates on these clippings she found, but I would presume they were published within a few days of his death.

             PROMINENT LONGVIEW  CITIZEN LEADER DIES

A. L. CONNOR SR., CIVIC AND CHURCH LEADER, PASSES; RITES TO BE HELD SATURDAY

    A. L. Connor Sr., prominent Longview civic leader and church man, died at his home 1200 Turner Drive, following an illiness of over a year.

    Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Welch Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lawrence landrum in charge.  Interment will be in Memory park with the Masonic Lodge in charge of the rites at the cemetery.

    The death of Mr. Connor removes from this section one of its most distinguished civic leaders.  He was born at Blue Ridge, Collin County, Texas and received his education in the Southwestern University, Georgetown.

    For 26 years he was manager and owner of the Connor Dry Goods Co. in Longview.  For nine years before moving to Longview he operated a dry goods store in Venus, Texas.  At the time of his death he was vice president of the Lacey Petroleum Co.

    The deceased took an active part in all civic and church affairs and contributed a great deal of his time and earnings toward charitable organizations.  Mr. Connor shunned publicity but in his unassuming quiet manner went about doing good in the community in which he lived.

    He was a member of the First Methodist Church; charter member and past president of the Longview Rotary Club; past President of the Longview Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. A. L. Connor Sr., one daughter, Mrs. G. H. Mercer, Shreveport. La.;  one son, A. L. Connor Jr., Waco;  five sisters, Mrs. Myra Bush, Corpus Christi; Mrs. Geraldine Lucus, Dallas; Mrs. Henry Thompson, Dallas;  Miss Minnie Connor, Dallas;  Mrs. e. O. Haltom, Houston and two brothers, C. C. Connor of Longview and E. F. Connor, Abilene.

    Pallbearers will be : C. E. Cordts, R. S. McCarley, Howard Watts, H. B. Ziegler, Cecil Story and H. L. Foster.

A. L. CONNOR rendered to his community ... The pre - oil Longview was a splendid town, because of such men as MR. CONNOR ... He took an active interest in every movement that meant something to Longview of Gregg County .... He helped organize the 4 - H clubs ...He had a leading part in the development of the dairying industry here ... He was an advocate of diversified crops ... As a merchant, he was honest and forthright in all of his dealings, and was willing at all times to extend a helping hand to those who needed him ... Mr. Connor helped reorganize the Gregg County Fair ... He wa on the committee that (through FRED STUCKEY'S appeal) brought the East Texas Chamber of Commerce headquarters to Longview ... He was a charter member and past president of the Longview Rotary Club ... He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a loyal and faithful member of the First Methodist and Masonic Lodge ...It would be virtually impossible to enumerate the contributions Mr. Connor made to his community ... He was a quiet, self - effacing man ... All that he desired for his reward for civic achievement was the satisfaction of knowing that he had done his part ... "Mr. Al," as he was affectionately known, has many monuments to his memory ... He had a grand sense of humor, and possessed a personality that caused everyone to like him ... Longview will never forget you, Mr. Al.

ILLNESS FATAL TO VETERAN EAST TEXAS BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADER
 

    Longview, Tex. Feb. 5 (Special).  A.L. Connor, Sr. prominent Longview civic leader and churchman, died Thursday at his home, following of over a year.

                          PIONEER RETIRED BUSINESS MAN DIES

                     A. L. CONNOR PASSES THURSDAY AFTERNOON

     A. L. Connor, Sr., 57, retired dry goods merchant and prominent citizen of Longview for 25 years died at his home, 1200 Turner Drive, Thursday at 3:00 p.m. following a prolonged illness.  Funeral services will be held at the Welsh Funeral Chapel at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with Rev. Lawrence Landrun, pastor of the First Methodist church in charge.  Burial will be in Memory Park.

    Deceased is survived by his wife; one son, A. L. Jr., of Waco; a daughter, Mrs. G. H. Mercer of Shreveport; five grandchildren; two brothers, E. H. Connor of Abilene, and C. C. Connor of Longview; five sisters, Miss Minnie Connor, Mrs. Geraldine Lucas, Mrs., Henry Thompson , all of Dallas; Mrs. B. L. Bush of Corpus Christi, and Mrs. E. O. Haltom of Houston.

    Mr. Connor moved to Longview in 1917 and opened a large dry goods and ready- to- wear store on East Tyler Street.  He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Rotary Club, past member of the board of trustees of the Longview schools, and was a member of the Methodist Church.

    Pall bearers will be Sam McCarley, C. E. Cordts, Howard Watts, H. L. Foster, H. B. Ziegler, and Ceccil Storey.

                                      MARLIN DEMOCRATE

                  FORMER MARLIN MAN EXPIRES AT LONGVIEW

    Word was received in Marlin Thursday afternoon of the death of 
A. L. Connor, 57, at his home in Longview after and illness of several months duration.

    A native of Collin county, he attended Southwestern university, and lived for a few years in Marlin.  Later he was in business in Longview, but retired about five years ago.

    He is survived by hi wife, remembered in Marlin as Miss Carlie Harlan; a son, A. L. ConnorJr., of Texarkana; on daughter, Mrs. G H. Mercer of Shreveport La., two brothers and four sisters.

    Funeral services were announced for Saturday afternoon, with burial in the Longview Cemetery.

CONNOR----Longview, Texas.------A. L. Connor Sr., who died at his home here, was buried here following funeral services Saturday afternoon.  The Rev.    Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bartlett, Sr. went to Longview Friday night to attend the funeral of their brother-in-law, A. L. Connor, who expired at his home Thursday following an illness of several months' duration.  The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon.
