Amick, Barbara Jo Norris Barbara Jo Norris Amick left this earth on Saturday, April 22, 2006, as a result of a fall. Barbara was born August 11, 1927, in Ruston, La., to Claude Avon and Bessie Lee Lewis Norris. She was a graduate of Ruston High School and attended Louisiana Tech, where she majored in secretarial sciences and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Barbara Jo and Carl Amick were married on June 20, 1946, in Bastrop, La. Following her marriage, they moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where they lived briefly before returning home. Barbara moved to Longview with her husband, Carl Edward Amick, and her children in 1952. Barbara was a devoted homemaker to her husband and three children, later partnering with her husband in Amick's Jewelry. She was especially accomplished as a grand champion Tennessee Walking Horse rider, winning the Southwest Breeder's Association Award in 1975. Her beloved prize-winning horses were Sandman and Supernatural. Additionally, Barbara was a member of the Home Demonstration Club for many years. During this time, Barbara became a skillful ceramicist, producing exquisite pieces. She was an avid outdoorswoman, perfecting her skills at bass fishing, and ultimately raising her own catfish. She and her family enjoyed camping, water skiing, and traveling throughout the southern U.S. Barbara and Carl divided their leisure time between Toledo Bend and Beaver's Bend. At home, she was a talented seamstress and gourmet cook. In her flower and vegetable garden, she had a natural green thumb and made her back yard a sanctuary for bird-watching. In 1967, Barbara and her family moved to Elderville, becoming members of the Centre Presbyterian Church. For nearly 40 years, Barbara was a loyal, committed, and faithful participant of her church. Barbara's quiet elegance endeared her to all people she met. Her spirit, giving nature, and selflessness, were her gifts to her family and the community. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brothers, Elgin, Homer, and Cecil Norris. Survivors include her husband, Carl Edward Amick; children, Elizabeth Hinkle of Longview, Carl Sterling and Felisa Amick of Corpus Christi, and Marcus Alan and Kip Amick of Tatum; grandchildren, Theresa Amick of Houston, Barbara Elizabeth and Paul Matlock of Longview, May Cobb of Austin, Courtney Eleanor and Isaiah Goforth of Longview, and MacAlan Amick of Tatum; sisters, Paulyne Lain of Haughton, La., Mary Frances Lott of Ruston, La., Claudie B. Cargill of Vienna, La., and Sarah Alice Norris of El Dorado, Ark.; and nieces and nephews, Betty Apalategui of Hillsboro, Ore., Bill Norris of Ruston, La., Jerry Norris of Ruston, La., Kay Naff of Ruston, La., Ann Stedman of Dallas, Larry Lott of Ruston, La., Jennifer Cargill of Baton Rogue, La., David Cargill of Vienna, La., and Gary Lain of Haughton, La. In honor of her life, a remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at the Centre Presbyterian Church in Elderville, with the Rev. Dave Smith officiating, under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Burial will follow in Elderville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Phil Porter, L.T. Mobbs, Mike Gamble, Charles Wright, Kim Smith, Rodney Henderson, Phil Peacock, and John McDaniels. Honorary pallbearers will be John Baker Barr, Sherman Smith, and Gary Lain. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening, April 25, 2006, at the Rader Funeral Home.
