He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in March,1862, and served until the end of the war. He served three years and one month in Co.C, 22nd Texas Regiment, Hubbard's Regiment, Walker's Division, an infantry division. Richard applied to the State of Texas for a Confederate Service Pension on Aug 11, 1913, and was approved on Sep 01, 1913, for a pension to begin Dec 01, 1913. Richard Castleberry was ordained an elder in the Pine Tree Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1872. He was a charter member and elder at Elmira Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday Schools. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Dennis Magrill, in Marshall, Texas.
