Where We Are

El Paso County is the westernmost county in Texas and its westernmost point is only about 165 miles from Arizona. In the other direction, El Paso County is about 750 miles from Houston so the county is actually closer to California than to eastern Texas state line. El Paso County is adjacent to both Mexico and New Mexico. The county seat is also called El Paso and both are short for "El Paso del Norte", which is Spanish for "the Pass of the North". The pass was actually carved through the mountains by the Rio Grande.

Since counties in this part of the country are extremely large, we only have three US counties bordering us. Hudspeth is on the east side of us, Otero, NM, is to the north and Doña Ana, NM, is both west and north of us. To the south and west, you'll find the great state of Chihuahua, Mexico.
