born June 23, 1922 in New Mexico went to be with Jesus and The Father on Tuesday, May 28, 2002. He was a resident of El Paso, Texas where he was employed with the Civil Service prior to his retirement. He served his country proudly during WWII, receiving the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Isabel C. Ramirez, four children who loved him very much: Consuelo Trujillo and husband Gilberto Trujillo, Maria Ramirez, Pedro Ramirez and wife Julia Ramirez, and Leticia Ramirez, all of El Paso, TX., 3 grandchildren; Susie Chavarria and husband Rene Chavarria of Los Alamos, NM; Gilbert Trujillo and wife Laura Trujillo of Westchester, CA and Pete Ramirez, Jr. of El Paso, TX., and 2 great grandchildren: Alexandria Chavarria and Sebastian Chavarria. Mr. Ramirez is also survived by 2 sisters and 1 brother. The family wishes to thank all doctors and staff members at Providence Memorial Hospital and White Acres Good Samaritan Village who treated Mr. Ramirez with kindness, compassion, respect and excellent health care. Special thanks go to Dr. Alfonso Chavez, Dr. Stanley Wagner and Dr. Gregory Szeyko. 59, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2002 in a local hospital. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Trejo was a warehouseman with Tri-State Wholesale Grocery. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesus Trejo, Juan Trejo, Ruben Trejo and his sister, Hortencia Trejo. Mr. Trejo is survived by his loving wife Juanita E. Trejo. COOK, MARIAN
passed away on May 29, 2002. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as one who did not sit on the side lines. She was involved with family, community, friends, and neighbors whereever she lived. She was born in Escondido, California August 4, 1918 and grew up in a close knit community with a lot of relatives near by. She enjoyed meeting some of the movie stars who would escape to Escondido from Hollywood. From there she moved to Reno, Nevada her Senior year of High School. She stayed in Reno to go to College and met and married C. Sharp Cook who was stationed there in 1943. When C. Sharp went to the South Pacific, Marian moved to Hawthorne, Nevada where she taught school and Sherma was born. When C. Sharp came back from WWII, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana for C. Sharp to go to graduate school. Wayne was born there. They then moved to St. Louis, Mo. and then to San Mateo, California. In San Mateo, Marian was friends with all the neighbors. She also volunteered to greet foreign travelers at the San Francisco Airport and had foreign visitors and students for dinner at her home. A foreign exchange student became part of the family for a while and stayed very close to them. When Marian and C. Sharp moved to El Paso, they continued being very involved with the community. Marian volunteered in the children's section of Thomason Hospital and their thriftshop, for El Pan and other activities at The University Presbyterian Church was President of The Women's Club of El Paso as well as helping out with foreign students at UTEP where C. Sharp taught. She was always there for friends, neighbors and her family and will now be there for C. Sharp. She will be greatly missed. Preceded in death by her husband C. Sharp Cook. Survivors include her daughter Sherma Cook; son & family Wayne, Diana, Matthew, & Aaron Cook; sister Louise Zeigler; 4 nieces. NEFF, JAMES R.
"JIM" passed away on May 30, 2002. Mr. Neff was born August 28, 1938 in Leesburg, Ohio where he was raised and completed school. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps. in 1955 and served 4 years. Mr. Neff then transferred to the U.S. Army and retired after 20 years of military service. He then began a second career in the Trucking Industry retiring in 1994. Mr. Neff was awarded the One Million Mile Safety Award without an accident. He moved to Grand Prairie in 1994. Mr. Neff was a former member of the V.F.W. in El Paso. First Sergeant United States Army (Ret.), age 68, passed away Friday, 31 May 2002 in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Weyenberg and his surviving wife of 45 years, Sharon, had been longtime residents of The Town of Horizon City. He is also survived by their son John, grandchildren Christopher, Michael and Cynthia. He was preceded in death by his daughter Julie and his son Joseph. KELLER, MADELINE
"Mitzi" 73, passed away June 2, 2002 after a courageous battle with lymphoma. She was born May 11, 1929 in Dallas, Texas, graduated from Highland Park High School and the University of Texas at Austin. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James A. Keller, daughters, Susan Kistler, husband, Henry and their children Margaret Keller and Henry Kistler III of Nashville, TN; Tricia Lowenfield, husband Clark and their children Nancy Page, Mary Moore and Catherine Lowenfield of El Paso; Lynn Keller, New York, NY; and Nancy Bacon, Venice, CA. She was a very active community volunteer devoted to improving the lives of the less fortunate in this community. She was honored as El Paso Mother of the Year in 1971. She served as President of Drive A Meal, Providence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, El Paso Girls Club, Realtors Auxiliary and Mesita and Western Hills School PTA. She was also Vice President of AAUW, on the Board of YWCA, Co-chaired the Sun Carnival in 1973 and served on the Community Planning committee of The United Way of El Paso. She was an active member of St. Clements Episcopal Church. Murillo, Rudy
age 56, of Plano, Texas, passed away June 1, 2002, in Plano. He was born December 29, 1945, in Silver City, New Mexico, to Encarnacion and Adelida (Perez) Murillo. He married Soledad Gamboa on September 2, 1977, in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Murillo served in the U.S. Air Force during the VietNam Conflict. He retired as sales manager for Levi Strauss in 1999 after 28 years. Mr. Murillo is survived by his wife, Soledad Murillo; son, Gustavo Murillo; daughters, Veronica Colmenero and husband, Isaac, and Christina Murillo; grandson, Isaiah Andrew Colmenero; granddaughter, Alexia Angelique Colmenero all of Plano, Texas; mother, Adelida Murillo of El Paso, Texas; and brother, Sam Murillo also of El Paso. "Cathi" 42, daughter of Mary Clealon Crowson of El Paso died quietly at her mother's home on Sunday, June 2, 2002. Cathi was lovingly attended by her sisters Celeste Lauderdale of El Paso and Farmington, NM., Jessica Martella of Hanford, CA., Julie Osburn and Lilli Santaella of El Paso. Cathi was a 1979 graduate of Coronado High School and had resided in Aurora, CO., for the past 15 years. She was an avid horsewoman, owning three prized Arabians. Cathi was a highly skilled and admired employee of Greenbar-GSA at the Federal Center in Denver. In addition to her mother and sisters Cathi is survived by her Grandmother Mary Rita Crowson, her nieces Amanda Martella, Rikki and Randi Santaella, her nephews Christopher Lauderdale, Timothy Boyd and Chase Osburn, her father Ezequiel "Cheque" Garcia, Jr., and Grandparents Julietta and Ezequiel Garcia. And a number of Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. She was preceded to heaven by her Brother-in-law Carey Lauderdale and Step-father Demetruis Lone Tree of Reedsburg, Wisconsin. NOERR, IRA E. PETE
Chief Warrant Officer 4, United States Army retired, age 80, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2002. Originally from Battle Hollow, McCalmont Twp., Jefferson City, PA. He has been a resident of El Paso since 1970. During World War II, Mr. Noerr served as a flight engineer instructor for B-24 bombers in the United States Army Air Corp. After WWII, Mr. Noerr returned to PA and civilian life for a period of three years. Not satisfied with life as a civilian, he returned to the U.S. Army and completed 30 years in the service of his beloved country. While in the army, he served as an automotive mechanic and instructor, an M33 fire control mechanic, and as an ordinance warrant officer in the Air Defense Artillery HAWK missile system. His tours overseas consisted of three tours in Korea, two in Germany and one in Okinawa. Mr. Noerr retired from service at Fort Bliss in June of 1976. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Helen A. Noerr, and his son Stephen Noerr. DEL VALLE, IRENE D.
We are deeply saddened and moved by the unfortunate passing of IRENE DEL VALLE. Irene was born on September 29, 1921, in Juarez, Mexico, and died May 31, 2002, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was the widow of Lt. Col. Salvador Del Valle. Irene was a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, sister, teacher, cook, scholar, devout Catholic, and friend. She attended and graduated from Vilas Elementary School and El Paso High School, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She had traveled the world, and as a young girl even drove Clark Gable's car. Her immense love for her family and friends was paramount in her life. She is survived by three children: Joseph D. Del Valle, Raymond S. Del Valle, and Anita C. Del Valle; as well as four grandchildren: Javier and Marissa Martinez, Pvt. Joseph A. Del Valle, and Justin A. Del Valle. Although we shall all miss the wonderful smells wafting from her kitchen and the love she gave unconditionally, this tragic loss is eased by knowing Irene is at peace and with God. went home to her God on June 4th, 2002. She was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua Mexico on November 19, 1934. She provided all who knew her a lifetime of love, dedication and inspiration. Beatriz had been a leader in the field of skin care for 20 years, serving as District Director for Jafra Cosmetics for many years. She was an inspiration for hundreds of women, motivating them to achieve their own success. Over the years, she received numerous awards, recognition and trips for her successful sales and sponsorship. However, her greatest achievement was the success of her consultants and watching them become independent and confident. This nurturing nature was carried over to her family, and all who knew her knew that her door was always open, keeping her house filled often with laughter and joyful noise of loving relatives. "Pavela's" (as she was known to many who loved her) laughter and spirit will always be remembered. She was also a member of Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church and a committed servant of her personal guardian, Our Lady Virgin of Guadalupe. Beatriz was also a loving wife to Jesus (Chuy) for 41 years, dedicated mother to Betty Santos, El Paso, TX, Nena Barnett, San Antonio, TX, and Carol Avila, El Paso, TX, and to her son-in-laws, Jaime Santos and Greg Barnett. MITHOFF, RICHARD W.
Chairman Emeritus of Mithoff Burton Partners and prominent civic leader, died Sunday, June 2, in Houston, Texas. He worked tirelessly for civic causes throughout his life, was committed to improving El Paso, and achieved industry respect and national recognition for his accomplishments and his local advertising agency. Dick Mithoff was born in LaPorte, Indiana, in 1920. His parents were the late Warren T. and Helen Mithoff. He lived in El Paso for most of his life, attending Crockett School and Austin High School. He received a B.S. degree from Texas Western College, (now UTEP), and also attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. During World War II he served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army. In 1946 he joined his father's advertising agency, where he learned the business by working in every department. He assumed leadership of the agency upon his father's death in 1960. Under Dick's guidance Mithoff Advertising Inc grew to become one of the largest and most prestigious agencies in the Southwest. He insisted on excellence in everything he did, and was unflagging in his dedication to serving his clients. He was also unflagging in his dedication to the advertising industry. He served as International Chairman of Worldwide Partners, Inc., served on the governing boards of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, was President and Director of Southwestern Association of Advertising Agencies, served as Director of the American Advertising Federation, and was a founding member and President of the Advertising Federation of El Paso. Dick applied the same dedication to his community. He served in leadership roles for dozens of civic, community, and charitable organizations including: Rotary Club of El Paso, Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce, Sun Bowl Association, University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso County Republican Party, El Paso Museum of Art, United Way, Sports Car Club of America, Goodwill Industries, Insights - El Paso Science Center, YMCA, and many others. His hard work and dedication was frequently recognized. Among his many honors are Outstanding Ex-Student Award from the University of Texas at El Paso, the Humanitarian Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Conquistador Award from the City of El Paso, Distinguished Service Award from the Rotary Club of El Paso, and Ad Man of the Year and Silver Medal from the Advertising Federation of El Paso. Dick Mithoff will be remembered for his unfailing kindness, his scrupulous fairness, his generosity, and his courage. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He is survived by his wife, Frances Maas Mithoff; his three sons: Richard Warren Mithoff and wife Ginni, Robert Mithoff and wife, Sammie, Raymond Mithoff and wife, Gelda; and two grandchildren: Michael Mithoff and wife Melissa, and Caroline Mithoff; and his sister Marjorie and her husband W.E. Funeral for retired Sgt. 1st Class, 50, Elgin, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Western Hills Church of Christ with Harley Davidson, minister, officiating. Sgt. Bosanko died Monday, June 3, 2002, at his home. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery under direction of Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home. He was born Dec. 17, 1951, in Fremont, Neb., to William Thomas and Edith Alberta Roerick Bosanko. He lived in many different places when he was a child, because his parents moved often with military assignments. He graduated from Andress High School in El Paso, Texas. He married Dorothy Virginia Davis on Nov. 10, 1969, in Marina, Calif.; He joined the Army in 1969, and served until his retirement on Feb. 2, 1984. He received the National Defense Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal (three Oak Leaf Clusters); Good Conduct Medal, 3rd Award; Rifle M-16 Expert Qualification Badge; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked in civil service at Fort Sill as a Hearing Conservation Coordinator at Reynold's Army Community Hospital. He retired in September 2001. He was a member and past president of the Texhoma Horseman's Association, member of the Okie Trail Riding Club, past president of the Elgin Riding Club, and past president and vice-president of the Comanche Riding Association. He was a Master Mason and attended Elgin First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Gelnda and Albert Lomeli, California; Loreley and Robert Leonard, Elgin; and Roberta Bosanko, Lawton; four grandchildren: Benjamin, Amanda, Tanner and Hunter; his parents; six brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

However, her greatest achievement was the success of her consultants and watching them become independent and confident. This nurturing nature was carried over to her family, and all who knew her knew that her door was always open, keeping her house filled often with laughter and joyful noise of loving relatives. "Pavela's" (as she was known to many who loved her) laughter and spirit will always be remembered. She was also a member of Santo Nino de Atocha Catholic Church and a committed servant of her personal guardian, Our Lady Virgin of Guadalupe. Beatriz was also a loving wife to Jesus (Chuy) for 41 years, dedicated mother to Betty Santos, El Paso, TX, Nena Barnett, San Antonio, TX, and Carol Avila, El Paso, TX, and to her son-in-laws, Jaime Santos and Greg Barnett. She will also be remembered as a much loved and treasured grandma to Jessica Santos, Jaime Santos, Jordin Santos, Acacia Barnett, Jared Barnett, and Danica Barnett as well as a beloved "Tia Pavela" to numerous nieces and nephews. ROBINSON, LEAH SUE KOORTZ
went to be with the Lord at 1:38 A.M. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002. She died at the Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas, Texas, after a prolonged illness. Leah was born on February 1, 1947 in El Paso, Texas to David and Goldie Koortz. She graduated from El Paso High School in 1965 where she was Head Varsity Cheerleader and Homecoming Football Queen. She was also a member of Who's Who, Freshman Spring Fiesta Duchess, Sophomore Class Favorite and Class Beauty for 3 years. She attended the University of Arizona and the University of Texas at El Paso prior to graduating from the St. Paul School of Nursing in 1969 as a Registered Nurse (RN). It was in Dallas that she met her future husband, Leland H. Robinson Jr. They were married shortly after her graduation from nursing school. She worked as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas until shortly before giving birth to her first child in 1972. For the next 30 years, Leah dedicated herself to being a full- time mother to her children and a supportive wife to her husband. She considered her roles as a wife and mother to be of the highest calling and always placed them above any personal career ambitions. She not only was a full-time mother to her own children, but frequently found herself to be a second-mom to her children's friends. Her home was always a safe haven for young people and a gathering place for her children's friends, even when her own children weren't present. She seemed to have a knack for making young people feel loved and comfortable in her presence. She taught a children's Sunday School Class at Surrey Hills Baptist Church for many years in addition to being a home-room mother for her children and a volunteer teaching assistant in the Yukon Public Schools for several years. Additionally, she chaired the Martha's Kitchen Ministry at Surrey Hills Baptist Church for several years. She participated in several women's Bible study groups over the years and was a leader in the renowned Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) in the late 1980's. Her proudest moment in the BSF movement was the opportunity to lead her mother to receive Jesus only days before her mother died in 1990. Leah was preceded in death by her father, David Koortz, her mother, Goldie Koortz, her sister Debra Koortz De Rosa, her father-in-law, Leland Robinson Sr., her mother-in-law, Grace Stinson Robinson. She is survived by her husband, Leland H. Robinson Jr. of Yukon, Oklahoma, her daughter, Tammy Lynn Robinson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and her son Dr. Leland H. Robinson III and his wife, Jennifer Leigh Willard Robinson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, grandson, Blake Baker of Yukon, Oklahoma, her sisters Marsha Koortz Capen of Houston, Texas, and Jan Koortz Lyons and her husband, Gary Lyons, of The Woodlands, Texas, brother-in-law, Carl De Rosa of Houston, Texas, sisters-in-law Rebecca Robinson Morris and her husband Jesse Morris of Plano, Texas, Mary Lestell Robinson of Plano, Texas, Jane Robinson Rhodes and her husband, Kevin Rhodes of Plano, Texas, Margaret Robinson Sutton and her husband, Mark Sutton of Washington Grove, Maryland and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends, each of them precious to Leah in their own way. Raymond, also known as Ole, worked for El Paso Electric Company for over 40 years before retiring in 1983 as the Newman Power Plant Superintendent. He and his family were dedicated members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, in El Paso, where he served as Elder and church leader for many years. Since relocating to the DFW area, they have worshiped at the Arlington Church. He served as lay pastor for several churches in the Texico Conference. He also served on many church committees and boards with enthusiasm for Christian Education. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Williamson. SALAS-PORRAS, JOSEFINA A.
beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, who made her mark nationally and internationally as an educator, entrepreneur and philanthropist died of pancreatic cancer in her El Paso home on Friday June 7th, 2002. She was the daughter of Enrique and Josefina Acevedo, longtime El Pasoans who immigrated to El Paso from Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. Born in 1926, "Pipina" attended Houston Elementary, graduated from El Paso High School at age 15 and from Texas College of Mines (now University of Texas at El Paso) at age 19 with a degree in English and minors in Spanish and Education. One of only 14 Hispanic women at the college when she enrolled, she made the Honor Roll, served as a class officer and was elected vice president of Sigma Delta Chi. She always knew that she wanted to be a teacher and, at the age of 12, had her first summer school on her front porch. The following summer, the El Paso Public Schools loaned her desks, blackboards, and textbooks so she could expand her school to the basement of her home. Upon graduation from college, she taught elementary school for several years before marrying fellow Texas College of Mines alum Francisco (Pancho) Salas-Porras in 1948. They immediately moved to Los Angeles where Pancho was Vice President of Azteca Films and they enjoyed Hollywood premieres, the beach and raising a family that would eventually include six children. In 1964 the family returned to El Paso and Pipina returned to teaching for the Public School. She yearned to have her own school again and in 1970 founded the Bilingual Institute, an international multi-faceted language school that provided training in second language acquisition and cultural awareness to individuals, businesses, governments and corporations, with bases in El Paso, Austin, Houston, Los Angeles, Mexico and Nicaragua. Clients included General Motors, McDonalds, General Electric, Ford and numerous El Paso and Juarez businesses. Her business success led to appointments as the first Hispanic woman on key boards, including the Freedom Forum, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas-El Paso Branch, El Paso Electric Company, Mountain Bell-Texas Advisory Board. Among the 19 boards on which she served included many in El Paso; KCOS Public Television, El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau, El Paso Diabetes Association, and Los Pobres Community Theater. She also served as a member of the Advisory Councils for the Business Department of the El Paso Community College and the College of Communications at the University of Texas at Austin. When named a trustee of Freedom Forum (then the Gannett Foundation) in 1979, she was one of very few, if not the only, Hispanic woman serving on a major U.S. foundation board. During her 22 years of service the foundation grew in both size and impact. It is now building the Newseum, a news museum on Washington, D.C.'s Pennsylvania Avenue. She was committed to advocacy for programs to extend opportunities to Hispanics and others in need. She was a strong supporter of the UTEP Mother-Daughter program, a member of Hispanics in Philanthropy, and encouraged Freedom Forum initiatives advancing racial diversity in the media. A dedicated and energetic supporter of her alma mater, she was a member of the UTEP Women's Auxiliary, Alumni Association, Matrix Society and chairwoman of her class reunion. Through the Freedom Forum, she brought much recognition and financial support not only to the Journalism department at UTEP, but also the Communication dept at UT-Austin, and Cathedral High School here in El Paso. She was extremely active in the community and participated in many civic and social organizations in El Paso and Juarez including the Pan American Roundtable and El Paso Boton Rojo. Many of her efforts were targeted to the most needy through local charities, churches and schools. She was especially proud of her final accomplishment in 2001 - publishing the book El Ratoncito Pequeno - a children's tale she remembered from her youth. It is illustrated by Jose Cisneros, a friend she had known all her life, and published locally by Cinco Puntos Press. Her hundreds of friends and family will agree that, more than her good deeds and hard work, she was known for her outgoing, enthusiastic personality, her ability to encourage and inspire people of all ages, her ready smile and her repertoire of jokes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco Salas-Porras. BEDELL, GWEN MAYNARD
78, Korean War Flight Nurse of El Paso, Texas, died June 4, 2002 at her home in El Paso, Texas with her beloved husband Lt. Colonel George Bedell (Ret.) at her side. Gwen was born December 3, 1923 in Billings, Montana, the fourth of nine children to James Dennis and Lillian Christine Maynard. At an early age she showed an aptitude for Leadership, Scholarship and Compassion. Upon graduation from Billings Senior High School, Gwen attended Nurse's Training at Billings Deaconess Hospital and worked as a nurse in Billings and Bozeman, Montana. She joined the United States Air Force in Denver, Colorado on March 12, 1951 and attended flight training in Mississippi. Before going to serve in the Korean War, the Air Force allowed her time, approximately a month, to take care of her brother Jim in Phoenix. Upon his death from cancer, she was immediately sent to Japan. When the Korean War ended, Captain Gwen Maynard was chosen to be the personal flight nurse to accompany former prisoner of war General Dean to Japan. In early 1953 Captain Maynard, U.S. Air Force, met Captain George Bedell, U.S. Army, in Tokyo. Later that year in December they were married at the American Consulate in Tokyo. Gwen was transferred from Hakata to Camp Misawa Air Force Base, separated from her husband. Shortly thereafter on August 21, 1954, she resigned from the Air Force and joined Captain George Bedell in Tokyo. Gwen worked at the Indian School in Seattle until Major Bedell returned from the Middle East. Then she accompanied him to Milwaukee for 2 years, during which time he served in the Army, and where they became avid fans of the Milwaukee Braves. With Gwen always at his side, assignments at Leavenworth Command General Staff School and as Battalion Commander of the McGregor Guided Missile Range in El Paso, Texas, Lt. Colonel George Bedell relied upon his gracious wife to entertain guests who visited this internationally known missile range. Gwen went to Germany with George for three years, and as he served the Army, she helped by being President of the German American Ladies Club of Ansbach, Germany. Then in late 1965, with her husband assigned to the Pentagon, she lived in Washington, D.C. where he retired in July to El Paso, Texas where they enjoyed retirement. Survived by her loving husband, Lt. Col. George Bedell (Ret.), four sisters, Ruth Chandler of Santa Clara, CA, Esther Stewart of Billings, MT, Betty Torgrimson of Puyallup, WA, and Frances Upton of El Segundo, CA, a brother Hank Maynard of Earp, CA, and Bair Oil, WY, 14 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents James and Lily Maynard, brother James Maynard and sisters, Lillian House and Marge Maynard. An avid reader, worker of crossword puzzles, friend of animals, loving wife and sister, Gwen Maynard Bedell's brightness, generosity, love and charm will be greatly missed by her loved ones, and her strength, courage, tenacity, vision and compassion for others suffering from cancer and other illnesses will be an inspiration for many. CHRISTE, GEORGE ALBERT
95, a resident of El Paso and previously from Dallas, Texas passed away on May 30, 2002. Born on June 9, 1906 in Jamestown, NY, he was the youngest son of Albert and Rosa Christe. Mr. Christe served as an officer in the U.S. Maritime Service during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, and retired after forty years of active duty, having sailed in many foreign ports around the world. During his service he was awarded "The Merchant Marine Combat Bar" confirming his active service with the U.S. Merchant Marine in a ship which engaged in direct enemy action; "The Merchant Marine Defense Bar" for active service during the National Emergency - Sep. 8, 1939 to Dec. 7, 1941; "Victory Medal" during W.W.II; "Atlantic War Zone Bar" during W.W.II; "Pacific War Zone Bar" - service in a war area; "Philippine Liberation Ribbon" - a war area; "Korean Service Bar" and "The Vietnam Service Bar." Survivors include his sister, Bessie A. Pappas of Wimberley, Texas; a nephew, Sophocles G. Pappas and his wife, Persephone of Wimberley, Texas; niece, RoseLee Warren and her husband, The Reverend Lewis Warren of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and niece, Georgia Cortez and her husband Michael of Port Aransas, Texas. Also, numerous relatives in Texas, Colorado and Georgia. His relatives and friends will miss his unique personality and ability to remain independent until his death. He was the CEO of Employment Administrators, INC. and was a pioneer in the Staff Leasing business as well as a founding member of the National Association for Alternative Staffing, which he served as National President for two terms. An active volunteer, he was proud to represent El Paso as a past member of the Sun Parade Committee, Sun Bowl Team Host Committee, which he chaired for several years, the Savane All American Golf Classic and the Sun Bowl Selection Committee. Gary was a Texas Champion chili cook and served as a finals judge at the World Championship Chili Cookoffs. He was a volunteer coach and umpire for little league baseball, football, and softball. A wonderful son, husband, father, and friend, he is survived by his mother, Vivian Lane Cadenhead, his brother, Charlie H. Thompson II (Linda K.), his wife Georganne and his children Trent Rufus and D'Lane. He is also survived by his mother- in-law, Mary L. NEGRETE, DIONISIO M.D.
13 Dec 1930-65 Jun 2002 Dionisio Negrete, M.D. passed away in Edinburg, Texas. Born on the west side, in Kansas City, he graduated from Redemptorist High School, married Mary Louise Espinosa and had four children. Mark, Teresa, Paul and Margaret. Dr. Negrete learned that he had the aptitude to succeed when he served in the U.S. Air Force as a communications specialist in Korea. He then received a degree in Science from Texas Western. Dionisio dreamed of more. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia Medical School, completed surgical residency at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Dr. Negrete returned to El Paso, opened his surgical practice in 1965. He thrived in the golden age of Health Care in the city he loved. His very special way with patients and colleagues enriched his life and the lives of those he touched. Later he married Ellen Negrete and had two children, Nichole and Joseph. Dr. Negrete loved music, played musical instruments, studied foreign languages, loved to read, traveled the world, became a licensed airplane pilot helped many young people get their start as professionals and was a tireless promoter of higher education. Dr. Negrete closed his surgical practice in 1998 to become medical director of the Physician Assistant program at the University of Texas Pan American. Dr. Negrete served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea, received a degree in Science from Texas Western. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia Medical School, completed residency at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, Dr. Negrete returned to El Paso and opened his surgical practice in 1965. He volunteered at Thomason General Hospital. He was Chief of Surgery at Columbia Medical Center, chaired numerous committees. Dr. Negrete co-founded Eastwood Hospital. He took emergency room call at Providence, Columbia East & West. He served as company physician for the Southern Pacific Railroad, ASARCO, Phelps- Dodge, Portland Cement, and El Paso Electric Company. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gonzalo and Concepcion, brother Joe, infant brothers Marcos, Francisco and Marcelino. Known as "Sandi Yerby", she was born September 29, 1942. Lifetime resident of El Paso. Went to meet our Lord June 11th 2002. She is survived by her parents Olen and Lucille Halbert: Odessa, TX; her sister Pamela & brother-in-law Eddie Gatlin: Odessa, TX; her children Michael Yerby: Colorado, Kelli and son-in-law Hugo Blanco: El Paso, Jeff Yerby and daughter-in-law Susie: El Paso, & their father Dick Yerby. She has four grandchildren; Jamie, Vinnie, Carole-Anne, and Sara. Sandi was feature Twirler at Ysleta High School from 1955 to 1959 when she graduated. She won numerous baton twirling awards. She was the owner of a baton twirling studio; her students performed at talent shows, service clubs, school functions and contests. She was promotor/director of Sandi's El- Pasoettes baton twirling corps, and she instructed the flag corps and majorettes at Andress and Parkland High Schools. She was director of the El Paso Lupus Association, she volunteered her talents with El Maida Shrine Oriental Band, NorthEaster Parade, participated in several Sun Carnival Parades and Halftime shows, she was awarded Spirit of El Paso and received many more awards too numerous to name. Sandi has endured a long road in her journey home to heaven where she is finally at peace. She was a loving daughter, mother, and friend, who was loved by all who were lucky enough to have known her. He was a concert promoter, promoting local and national artist. A pioneer in bringing Mex-Tex to El Paso such as Little Joe Y La Familia, Rene Rene, and Sunny and Sunliners; Big Bands names such as Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton in the 40's & 50's. Also he assisted in bringing in Rock & Roll artists like Chuck Berry, Edda James, Fats Domino and James Brown; Mexican Artist Maria Victoria, Juan Gabriel, Amalia Mendoza, Angelica Maria, Juan Mendoza and Sonora Santanera. He was a free lance visual merchandiser with various stores in Cielo Vista Mall and later working for Dillards full time until his retirement. He organized fund raisers for Father Rahm Pastor of Our Lady of Youth Center. He is preceded in death by his sisters Magdalena Maria Stephens & Amelia Stephens; brothers Antonio Stephens, Arturo Stephens, Ricardo Stephens & Roberto Stephens. Survivors include his wife Olga R. THOMPSON, JOSEPHINE S.
passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2002. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend; she will be missed by all who knew her. She was born on August 21, 1914, in Selma, Alabama. "Feenie," as she was known to family and friends, moved to El Paso with her parents, Barney and Elizabeth Spinks, in 1919. A graduate of El Paso High School, she married Lewis K. Thompson in 1924. They remained inseparable until his death in 1999. In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, wife and mother, Josephine donated countless hours to many civic and charitable organizations in El Paso. Among those benefiting from her work are the Women's Auxiliary of the University of Texas at El Paso, the Sun Carnival Association, United Way, Planned Parenthood of El Paso as past President, Pleasant View Home as past Treasurer, and St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church. After raising her children, she chose to work in the women's fashion business at the Provencial Shop, GaiBo Fashions as manager, and the original location of Tres Mariposas as manager. In her spare time, she was an avid gardener, bridge player, and shopper extraordinaire. She is survived by her brother William B. Spinks of El Paso, son Kirk Thompson of Woodland Hills, CA, son Scott Thompson of Santa Teresa, NM, granddaughter Brooke Goldman of Greenville, SC. Cuca moved to the U.S.A. from Torreon, Mexico at 9 years old. At 17 she became a machine operator at UMC where she worked until retirement. The immediate family would like to thank Hospice VNA and all of the agencies that helped make Cuca's last year more comfortable. 93, a resident of El Paso, passed away Friday, June 14, 2002. She was born in Opelika, AL, and moved with her family to El Paso from Alabama in 1926. Graduating from El Paso High School in 1927, she subsequently earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa), a Masters Degree from the University of Southern California, and a Doctorate from the University of Texas (Austin). She taught in the elementary schools of El Paso for several years prior to her appointment as a member of the Department of Education Faculty at Texas Western College, where she served until her retirement. Married to the late Lyle "IKE" Henderson, past Principal Planning Engineer for the International Boundary and Water Commission, she is survived by her stepchildren, Dr. Michael and Joselita Henderson of Las Vegas, NV and Brenda Reeve of Newbern, NC, and four step grandchildren. 78, passed away Monday June 17, 2002. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a concert promoter, promoting local and national artist. A pioneer in bringing Mex-Tex to El Paso such as Little Joe Y La Familia, Rene Rene, and Sunny and Sunliners; Big Bands names such as Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton in the 40's & 50's. Also he assisted in bringing in Rock & Roll artists like Chuck Berry, Edda James, Fats Domino and James Brown; Mexican Artist Maria Victoria, Juan Gabriel, Amalia Mendoza, Angelica Maria, Juan Mendoza and Sonora Santanera. He was a free lance visual merchandiser with various stores in Cielo Vista Mall and later working for Dillards full time until his retirement. He organized fund raisers for Father Rahm Pastor of Our Lady of Youth Center. He is preceded in death by his sisters Magdalena Maria Stephens & Amelia Stephens; brothers Antonio Stephens, Arturo Stephens, Ricardo Stephens & Roberto Stephens. Survivors include his wife Olga R. THOMPSON, JOSEPHINE S.
passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2002. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend; she will be missed by all who knew her. She was born on August 21, 1914, in Selma, Alabama. "Feenie," as she was known to family and friends, moved to El Paso with her parents, Barney and Bertha Spinks, in 1919. A graduate of El Paso High School, she married Lewis K. Thompson in 1934. They remained inseparable until his death in 1999. In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, wife and mother, Josephine donated countless hours to many civic and charitable organizations in El Paso. Among those benefiting from her work are the Women's Auxiliary of the University of Texas at El Paso, the Sun Carnival Association, United Way, Planned Parenthood of El Paso as past President, Pleasant View Home as past Treasurer, and St. Francis on the Hill Episcopal Church. After raising her children, she chose to work in the women's fashion business at the Provencial Shop, GaiBo Fashions as manager, and the original location of Tres Mariposas as manager. In her spare time, she was an avid gardener, bridge player, and shopper extraordinaire. She is survived by her brother William B. Spinks of El Paso, son Kirk Thompson of Woodland Hills, CA, son Scott Thompson of Santa Teresa, NM, granddaughter Brooke Goldman of Greenville, SC. She was born in Scottdale, Pennsylvania and moved to El Paso in 1949 from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with her husband John Akers Sr. who preceded her in death in 1988. She was the pillar of strength of the Akers' Clan, as they were known by those that knew the family, raising five boys and two girls. Natalie was survived by her five sons, Tom W. Akers of El Paso, and wife Kathy of Dallas, TX, David L. Akers and wife Patty of El Paso, John (Jock) P. In loving memory of, born in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg, July 3, 1917 and died peacefully at home on June 19, 2002. Mom was a devoted mother whose generosity and love was our blessing. Her intelligence, wit, and fiery spirit charmed all those around her. Marie graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1938 and became a member of the French Resistance during World War II. She spoke four languages and served as a translator for the American government after the war. A gifted writer, Marie became known for her passionate letters to the editor in the El Paso Times. She was a substitute teacher for many years at Eastwood High School and touched the lives of many students. She was our beloved mother and we will miss her very much. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Spence. Marie is survived by a son, Joseph Spence; daughter Michele Spence and her husband Ken Marschall; daughter Kelly Spence and her husband Rick Hecker, and grandchildren Andrew Marschall, Kristin and Jackie Hecker. Matthews, Violet Marie
79, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2002. She was a resident of El Paso since 1955. She was born in Hartman, Arkansas on November 28, 1922. She graduated as a registered nurse from the St. Edwards School of Nursing, Ft. Smith, Arkansas in 1944. She served in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant from 1945 to 1947, and as a Captain from 1948 to 1953. She was a veteran of the Korean War and World War II during which she received the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars, the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), the World War II Victory Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon. She was a head nurse in the Maternal and Child Health Nursing Section at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. She retired from Civil Service after thirty years in 1980. She was preceded in death by her son Bobby G. Matthews. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Lynne Hoobler, grandchildren Tiffany Ruiz, William Hoobler, Jr., Mandilyn Matthews, and Jacquilyn Matthews, great-grandchildren Adrian Ruiz, Azsa Ruiz, and Anthony Ruiz, and numerous nieces and nephews. NAPOLES, ARTURO
passed away peacefully on June 18, 2002 in Sunnyvale, California at age 89. Arturo now joins his beloved wife of 65 years, Maria Luisa who passed away in 1999, in eternal rest. He is survived by his four loving children: Arthur Napoles, of Mountain View, CA; Leticia Williams of Moss Beach, CA; Nora Smith of Sausalito, CA; and Robert Napoles M.D. of San Francisco, CA; as well as nine granddaughters and seven great grandchildren. Arturo's incredible devotion to and unyielding affection for his wife was among his many remarkable attributes. Friends and family loved Arturo for his wisdom, generous spirit, guidance, nostalgic story-telling and a unique ability to make friends with literally each and every acquaintance. Arturo was born in 1912 in San Francisco, but he spent his childhood years in El Paso, Texas and Chihuahua, Mexico. As a child in Chihuahua, Arturo lived with his grandmother. He had colorful memories there, both good and bad, which he often shared with his family. Because there was little money, Arturo resourcefully created fun by substituting oranges for basketballs and pieces of adobe for marbles. He attended Jesuit school there until the age of 13 and then reunited with his mother in El Paso, where she had been working to earn higher wages to support her son. It was then in El Paso that he met his beautiful wife, Maria Luisa, who would marry him after a 7 year courtship. Despite an impoverished childhood and a lack of higher education, Arturo had a successful career in El Paso, working at the U.S. Customs Office where he served for 25 years as a high ranking officer and at the Government Employees Credit Union where he worked for 21 years as a Vice President and Director. He retired from from both posts in 1970. Arturo's eldest son and daughter both became executives of the Aerospace industry, his younger son became a physician and his younger daughter became a bank manager. Arturo will be laid to rest in private family service on Friday, June 28 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, CA.

Mr. Jean is survived by his sister Mackey Hunt of Memphis, Tenn., his daughters Barbara Cawthon and husband Billy of Lebanon, Tenn., Kathrine Jean Olson and Margaret Louise Jean both of Harrisburg, PA. He is also survived by his step children: Jimmy McDaniel and wife Bonnie of El Paso, Annis Lee and husband George of Brenham, Texas, Jannis Stuckmayer and husband Allen of Pierz, MN, Sharon Frieda and husband Wayne of Bay City, TX and Richard McDaniel and wife Becky of Lubbock, TX. There are 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and 5 nieces. Jean (as he was known throughout his live) was a Retired Master Sergeant (E7) of the U.S. Army. A member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and National Assoc. for Uniformed Services. He served in the W.W. II and the Korean War. After retiring he worked for The Post Office for 39 years, was a member in good standing of The American Postal Workers Union. He was a volunteer for th Eastside Chapter of The AARP and a 22 year member of The Elks Lodge #187. Visitation with friends and family will be held on Friday, June 28th at Restlawn Funeral Home, 4848 Alps from 4 :00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with funeral service at Restlawn Mausoleum Chapel, 8700 Dyer at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday the 29th with full military honors. former professor of Religious Education at the International Baptist Bible Institute in El Paso, passed away June 12, 2002 in San Angelo. He was born November 13, 1919 in Greenville, Texas. J T was part of the first faculty at the International Baptist Bible Institute in El Paso and was a member of the faculty for 24 years. MATTOX, LORANN MAYS
Beloved wife, devoted mother, community leader and friend to all who knew her, 57, passed away on June 26, 2002. Lorann was a lifelong resident of El Paso and is survived in death by her husband of over 35 years, former El Paso County Judge, Charles W. "Chuck" Mattox, by her daughter, Autumn Virginia Mattox of Dallas, and by her son, Charles W. "Chuck" Mattox, Jr. She was preceded in death by her son Thomas Matthew "Matt" Mattox and daughter Katherine Harvey Mattox and also by her parents, Virginia Cross Mays, who served as the Assistant Society Editor for the El Paso Herald Post and Tom Mays, former County Commissioner, Precinct Four. Mrs. Mattox's many achievements began with her graduation from El Paso High School in 1962 after which she attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford and Texas Western College (the University of Texas at El Paso), here she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Lorann Mays Mattox was a beauty queen at both University of Mississippi and at Texas Western College. She also served as president of her flight attendant class with American Airlines. She was truly loved by the community and enjoyed the work she did as manager of Cross Nursery and Tom Mays Garden Mart. Lorann Mattox also received recognition for her beauty, reigning as Fabens Cotton Queen and as a model at the White House Department Store. Her many contributions to the community include membership in the Women's Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce at the age of 19, and in 1973-1974, she served as Chairman Director. Later she became instrumental in the establishment of the Women's Department of the Chamber of Commerce in Albuquerque. She was also an active member of the Junior League of El Paso and the El Paso Symphony Guild and erved on the Board of Directors for the Southwestern International Livestock Show and Rodeo. Also of note in a lifetime of community involvement are her instrumentality in erecting the 25-foot Obelisk Monument in Tom Lea Park, which serves as the designation of the southern most tip of the Rocky Mountains, and for the building of the rock wall surrounding Concordia Cemetery. Lorann Mattox was the chairwoman for the Swine Flu Immunization Program and was a dedicated volunteer at the Newark Maternity Hospital and at the Houchen Center. In 1973, she was named one of the Outstanding Women in America for her civic work. Memorial service will be at 1 P.M. on Saturday June 29, 2002 at St. Clement's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral with the Very Reverend Philip Jones officiating. PHILLIPS, LUCILLE C.
96, passed away on April 11, 2002 in Las Vegas, NV. She was born to William H. & Lily Cook on June 18, 1905 in Tularosa, NM. She married James M. Phillips of Deming, NM and they resided in Separ, NM as ranchers. They moved to El Paso in 1955. She and her husband were founding members of the El Paso Rose Society. Known by the family as Gi Gi, Lucille taught piano in El Paso for over 20 years. She loved her music and left a legacy of the students she taught. She spent her retirement years growing roses and vegetables in her gardens. She is preceded in death by her husband James M. "Cap" Phillips, her daughter Allene "Babe" Miller, son-in-law Orville L. Miller, brother William H. Cook, grandson James Miller, great-grandson Frederic Armstrong. She is survived by a grand daughter Carolyn Armstrong & husband Thomas, great-grand daughters Tracy Spigener and husband Raymond Shari Armstrong, great-grandson Shane Armstrong, great-great grand daughters Sierra & Miranda Spigener, great-great grandson Raymond Spigener all of Las Vegas, NV, and a niece Dianne Warren of El Paso.
