PETERSON, EMMETT MILTON JR.,
74, passed away on April 28, 2001. He was born September 4, 1926 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Emmett and Mable Peterson. He is survived by his wife Barbara Dye Peterson; two daughters, Polly Coleman, El Paso, Texas, and Marsha Callis, Littleton, Colorado; two sons, Lance Peterson, Tallahassee, Florida, and Shawn Peterson, Panama City Beach, Florida. He had two granddaughters, three grandsons, one great granddaughter, and two great grandsons. Mr. Peterson served in the U.S. Navy in WWII from 1944 to 1946, he was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. He also served the U.S. Army in Korea from 1951 to 1954, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, U.N. Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Peterson was a retired engineer and Branch Chief in the Missile Intelligence Agency, Government Civil Service. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Decatur, Alabama serving as a Deacon and Elder. Mr. Peterson was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts of America for work in their local program. Mr. Peterson will have a memorial service today, Tuesday, May 1st, 2001 at 1:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home West Chapel of Remembrance, located at 480 North Resler, Pastor Don Ciesielski officiating. Retired Colonel 79, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2001 in El Paso. Col. Cavanna was a longtime resident of El Paso. He was a 1945 graduate of the military academy at West Point and served 34 years in the United States Army. He taught Math at Bel Air High School after retiring. He was a member of 3RD Church of Christ Scientist and was active in the West Point Society of El Paso. Col. Cavanna attended the University of Oklahoma where he received a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. He was also an active member with the Former Chiefs of Staff at Ft. Bliss. Col. DORITY, JEANETTE LaCROIX
born March 29, 1920 in Elizabeth, La., died on April 30, 2001 at a local hospital in El Paso, Texas. She spent her youth in Newton, Texas and moved to El Paso in 1953 with her husband, Guy E. Dority. She was a long time employee of El Paso National Bank, from which she retired in 1985. During retirement, Jeanette lovingly created many beautiful quilts for her family and friends. She took great pride in these works of art until disabled by the effects of dementia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. G. Graham of Newton and sisters Camille Hughes and Darhl Helen LaCroix. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Guy E. TSGT. USAF, Ret., 77, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2001. Mr. Gregory was a resident of El Paso for 46 years. He retired from Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX., after serving 23 years of service in the United States Air Force where he served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gregory, along with other comrades, founded Disabled American Veterans Chapter #187 in 1966. He will also be remembered for his faithful commitment of serving the Lord as a Reverend with the Methodist Church. Mr. Gregory is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Gregory, son, David Gregory, daughters, Margaret Green and Evelyn Aigbedion, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. 65, passed away on April 30, 2001. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carlyle Simon, Jr. and infant son, Carl Simon. Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia Cease, Phyllis Simon, Linda Green, Debbie McElwain, Monica Rogers, and their families, including eight grandchildren and four great- grandchildren, her sister, Emmi Riedl of Contwig, Germany, mother-in-law Blanche Taylor and their extended families. Helen was a nurse at Providence Memorial Hospital for 15 years, providing countless patients with her special, tender care. She was an affectionate daughter, caring sister, devoted wife, loving mother, steadfast friend, and above all, a faithful child of God. Helen was an inspiration to everyone she knew. The lives of those she leaves behind will be less bright without her brilliant presence. A memorial service officiated by Evangelist John Steinhilper will be held at 9:45 A.M. COTSONIS, DENUS A.
died at home Tuesday, May 1, 2001, of cancer. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Denus served in the U.S. Army from 1939 until 1962. During the Normandy invasion, he parachuted behind enemy lines, and everything since then has been gravy. After retirment from the military Denus was a special education teacher until the early 1980's. Then, he, his wife, various pets and the Airstream trailer traveled the length and breadth of the United States. Denus was preceded in death by his adored wife Belle Valle Cotsonis. He is survived by a son, Byron (Corky) Cotsonis, Byron's wife Margaret Horn Cotsonis, and their daughter Janice Cotsonis of Bryan, Texas. Denus is also survived by a daughter, Carol Cotsonis of El Paso and a brother, Van Cotsonis of Pensacola, Florida. A Masonic memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2001 at El Paso Lodge No 130, 1505 Mcagruder Street, followed by a gathering at Cotsonis home. "Mama" 90, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001 in her home with her granddaughter Patricia Haley. She was a life long resident of El Paso and a member of the Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her husband Ramon Lightbourn, grandchildren Richard & Jamell, and is survived by her sisters Antonio (Toni) Melendez and Inez Rosalez of San Juan, Tx., brother Tiburcio (Buch) Lopez, children, Ramon Lightbourn Jr., Gloria Lightbourn, Arturo Lightbourn and wife Mary Elsa, Salvador Lightbourn and wife Vicky, Alicia Armenta and husband Magdaleno, Margarita Harbeck and husband Earl and Lucila Lightbourn all of El Paso; and Elizabeth Nunez and husband Agustin of Catonsville, Maryland and Rosa Maria Fonseca and husband Edward of San Francisco, California. She is also survived by 32 adoring grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren who will proudly carry on her legacy. Mrs. Lightbourn was a woman filled with so much love to give, that for more than 9 years, she and her husband, Ramon, provided a foster home for more than 300 children. She also dedicated much of her time to provide loving childcare for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren until her health would no longer allow it. "Mama", was greatly admired and will always be an inspiration to those who loved and knew her. Her love for children and her commitment to improve the well being of others, was passed on to all of her children and grandchildren and is reflected in their professional careers. Because of her life, this world is a better place and everyone whose heart was touched by her love will truly miss her. 80, passed away Friday, May 4, 2001. Mr. Levy was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was a veteran of WWII. He was a graduate of UT Austin and 2nd generation owner of Angelus Cleaners. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 8 2001 at Sun Valley Baptist Church, at 2:00 p.m. 9901 McCombs in El Paso, Texas for Adel C. Schrein who passed away on May 1, 2001. She was 86. Pastor Rob Jackson, grandson of Mrs. Schrein, will officiate the services. Adel Calvin Schrein was born September 2, 1914, in Humboldt, NE and grew up in Wahoo, NE. She Married Reinhold T. Schrein on October 4, 1938 in Fremont, NE. They had three daughters, Connie Jackson of El Paso, TX, Kathie Adkins of Lake Arrowhead, CA and Jigger Staby of Durango, CO. She had lived in El Paso since 1973 and prior to that had resided in Alamogordo, NM since 1953, where R.T. Schrein owned Apache Van and Storage. She was a blessing to her children and grandchildren and was very active in many community activities throughout her life. Mrs. Schrein had been active in Trinity Lutheran Church in El Paso, prior to being diagnosed with Pick's disease in 1998. She is survived by nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Her only sister, Anita Bryant, resides in Denver, CO. Her husband R.T. (Doc) Schrein preceded her in death. Donations may be made to the following organizations in lieu of flowers: Alzheimer's Association, Mrs. Schrein had a form of this terrible disease; Hospice of El Paso, who helped give loving care for her in her last difficult days; or Family for a Lifetime Ministries, Wimberly, TX. 1917-2001. Born May 5, 1917 to Kittie Mapp Buntyn and James Morris Buntyn in Newton County, Mississippi. The youngest of 14 children. Married Winifred C. Amis on June 4, 1939. Came to Berino, New Mexico July 1939. Employed by Santa Fe Railroad April 1941. Where he advanced to engineer and retired June 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Buntyn had 4 children John H. Jr. and Robert C. of El Paso, TX. James M. of Collinsville, MS. Susan Tayman of Simi Valley, CA. Mrs. Buntyn went to her reward August 1986. Mr. Buntyn found a new companion in Laura Sue Hamilton on December 24, 1988. He became a wonderful stepfather to Bradley Hamilton, Zena James, and Gaynelle Adams of Austin, TX. Mr. Buntyn has 9 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Mr. Buntyn was President of the Local Chapter of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers before his retirement. ADAMS, RAYMOND GEORGE
"DEDA", a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Thursday May 3, 2001 at the home of his daughter in Tucson, Arizona. He was 83 years old. Born Oct. 15, 1917 in the small town of Slovan, Penn., Adams was an accomplished athlete in Football and Baseball and was a young leader in his high school and college years. He graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army and becoming a World War II Veteran. During his time in the armed forces, he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Winnie Morris, whom he married in 1946 and shared a blessed life for 55 years. He was a member of St. Francis on the Hill, Episcopal Church. Adams worked as a freshman teacher at Bowie High School in El Paso before joing State National Bank as a bookkeeper. In his several years at the bank, he became a teller, then a manager of the saving department and eventually Vice President. Adams coached baseball for the the Country Club Branch of the Optimist Club, where he served as president and was a lifetime member. During his retirement, Adams became an avid golfer, making two impressive holes-in-one on the Dos Lagos golf club course in Anthony, N.M. He also loved animals and card for many dogs during his life, including his most beloved, a black Labrador named Dolly. Adams is survived by his wife Winnie; his daughter Susan Meyer of Tucson; and his son Barney Adams of Lubbock, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren Tara Kirkpatrick, Amie Meyer, Kaka Adams and Brooke Adams. 91, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2001 in El Paso. Mrs. Wilson was born on June 6, 1909 in Asarco, Durango, Mexico. She was the daughter of William and Felicitas Morris. SHe grew up in Chihuahua where she met and married Renie Wilson. Katita taught kindergarten at the "Colony" in Avalos, Chihuahua. She moved to El Paso after the death of her husband, where she spent her remaining years. Mrs. Wilson also taught at Saint Patrick's School. Katie was a friend, teacher, wife, and mother. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband and sister, Julia. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Shupe and husband Bill, Florence Delgado and husband Robert. 9 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren. SANCHEZ, MR. JOSE ANGEL
83, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001 of complications related to Parkinson's disease. Mr. Sanchez, a man of humor who loved ranchera music and anything sweet, was born on October 20, 1917, in Seguin, Texas, the eldest of Domingo and Julia Palacios Sanchez. He spoke With delight of his childhood, but left home forever when called to serve his country during World War II. He was stationed at Fort Bliss and soon met his lifelong love: Marta Beatriz Escobar. Courtship led to marriage and a 57-year journey together. Along the way, they were joined by five children: Elva Martinez and husband Guillermo Jr., Edna Solis and husband Efrain, Patricia Sanchez, Jose Luis Sanchez and wife Maria Estela Mora, Carlos Sanchez and wife Sandra Elizabeth. Mr. Sanchez worked for 32 years as the Foreman of the air conditioning and refrigeration shop at White Sands Missile Range. After retiring, he worked at Breeze Air Conditioning in El Paso. He is survived by his wife, five children, and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his uncle Epimenio Palacios, brother Antonio, and sisters Guadalupe, Soledad and Ramona. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Juan and his infant daughter Laura. Visitation will be Friday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina. She was born on Dec. 1, 1907 in Casas Grandes, Mexico and settled in El Paso after the Mexican Revolution. She served as matriarch of the Arrambide family. She was a member of the Third Order of Fransiscans and The Catholic Daughters of America, Club de Mujeres Internacionales, Damas Leonas de Cd. Juarez. She was Co-founder of Pancho's Mexican Buffet. She was deeply loved by her son Jesse G. Arrambide, Jr., and wife Carolina; daughter, Maria A. Carrea; son-in-law Al Correa; daughter, Lilia A. Reade; son-in-law, Luis P. Reade. Her grandchildren are; Al Correa Jr., Leticia Arrambide, Jesse G. Arrambide III, Lilia Carmona, Lilia P. Pellicano, Carmella Ramer, Rosa A. "MONIE" age 75 and a long time resident of El Paso, passed away May 6, 2001. Amalia Hermes was born January 29, 1926 in Bloomington, IL where she attended High School and College. After graduation she moved to San Francisco, CA and then to Honolulu, Hawaii. In Hawaii she met the love of her life, Jess Bautista. From this love eight children were born. Upon settling in El Paso, TX in 1970, Monie worked as a School Nurse for many years. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jess Bautista, daughters Tanya Wetherell and husband Dayle Wetherell, Melissa Means and husband Frank Means, Harri Bauman and husband Jim Baumann, Thea Pierce and husband Mark Pierce, Fran Browett and husband John Browett and Libby Bautista. Sons Tony Bautista and wife Lana Bautista, Matt Bautista and wife Pam Bautista. Grandchildren Cameron and Michael Luciano, Dylan, Addie and Celeste Pierce, Octavia Browett, Jessica and Matthew Bautista, Tyler, Nicholas and Kathryn Bautista. Her daughter Lorie Bautista McCurdy preceded her in death. Monie's life was full and she lived it with great enthusiasm. Her love for the Lord was evident in her service and care to others. To this union was born a daughter, Anita Dolores (Person) Dailey. Laura united with Phillips Chapel C.M.E. Church until she was called from her earthly home to her home on high, where only God's redeemed can go. She leaves to cherish in loving memory, a devoted husband, Howard; daughter Anita; grandchildren Monte, Rocky and Dawn; granddaughter- in-law Vicki; great grandsons Oscar and Dustin; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. IVEY, MR. WILLIAM EUGENE
"Bill" died Friday, May 11, 2001. Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at Martin Funeral Home on on George Dieter; rosary following at 7 p.m. officiated by Ft. David Ivey. A funeral mass is scheduled Wednesday, May 16 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 10 a.m. Following the mass, the burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Mr. Ivey was recently found to have bone cancer. He was 74 years old. Bill Ivey was born in Fabens, Texas on the Ivey Dale Owen farm on October 8, 1926. He was one of seven boys, the fifth child of Marie Dolan and K. B. Ivey. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Ivey completed his primary education at Incarnate Word School in the old Ysleta Mission then attended Ysleta High School graduating in 1944. Immediately after graduating, at the age 17, he joined the Navy and was stationed in California. Upon leaving the service, Ivey began post-secondary studies in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He married Nell Drugan of Socorro on January 31, 1948 and moved to his farm in an area south of Fabens traditionally referred to as the "Island" where they raised their eleven surviving children. Up to his death, Ivey, a licensed real estate broker, was involved in land development, ending up in business with two of his youngest sons. His love of the Mexican culture and its people added to the places that he came to call home and to the people that he readily called family. Mr. Ivey was preceded in death by his son James Douglas Ivey. He is survived by his children, Michele Wahnsiedler, Patricia Lettunich, Kathi McChristian, Teresa Orr, Bill Ivey Jr., King Ivey, Paul Ivey, Nellie Kay McDowell, Gary Ivey, Warren Ivey, and Paula Kesner; 25 grandchildren, and 8 great- grandchildren. Barbara was born on May 4, 1936 in Dallas to Dock and Mattie Harried Holder. She was a former resident of Grand Prairie and a 1954 Honor Graduate of Grand Prairie High School. She was also a former resident of El Paso for 18 years. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a very active mother in her children's school activities. Born March 14, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he was preceded in death by his father, Don Malcolm Caviness and his mother Clara Jo Willey Caviness. McEvers, Richard John
Lieutenant Colonel US Army Retired born 5 May 1923 to Isaac Leroy McEvers and Ethelee Julia McEvers, died May 13 2001 at Providence Memorial Skilled Nursing Facility. He was 78 at the time of his death. He fought nearly three months at Providence to overcome heart surgery and subsequent complications to make it back before expiring. LTC McEvers grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during the depression, hard times, and a poor family. He played multiple sports in high school and was a competitor in the golden gloves boxing program. He attended the University of Iowa until WWII broke out, whereupon he entered the Navy and became a Naval Aviator. He flew multiple types of aircraft during the war to include the Hellcat, Dauntless, and Corsair. His duties included aircraft shuttle pilot from factory to port of embarkation, test pilot, and submarine patrol duty. During his service in a submarine patrol unit which was assigned duty in the Gulf of Mexico, his patrol was credited with the sinking of a German U-boat and one of his bombs helped crack the hull of the German raider. Lt. J.G. McEvers was cited for bravery by the Navy for pulling an injured pilot out of a burning aircraft on the ground, later in the war. On several occasions Lt. J.G. McEvers had to bail out of compromised aircraft himself. Upon the end of WWII, he was honorably discharged by the Navy and left the service. He became a lumber jack in the Pacific Northwest. In 1951 he later joined the Army National Guard in Oregon and attended officer basic training. His unit was called to active duty and he spent the remainder of his career in the US Army. LTC. McEvers served in locations around the world to include Permanent Change of Station assignments in Texas, Alaska, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and Iran. He was cross- trained in the Air Defense Artillery Branch and Field Artillery Branch. He served in both kinds of units throughout his career. He had several assignments during his career at Fort Bliss, Texas. His last assignment was as the Director of the High Altitude Missile department at the Air Defense School. LTC McEvers worked with the CIA during his career where he visited numerous countries. LTC McEvers was on the promotion list to Colonel when he suffered a heart attack and was medically discharged from the service. Upon retiring after 28 plus years of military service in 1970, LTC McEvers tried his hand at the printing business, real estate, and oil exploration. His greatest love and passion was his family and the time he spent in New Mexico in the mountains at his cabin. He is survived by his wife, Ila Mae; son, Major USAR Rt. James L. McEvers and his wife Susan Sandidge McEvers who is a Registered Nurse at Baylor hospital in Dallas; Grandchild, Julia Anne McEvers and great grandchild Kelsay Skylin; Grandchildren Katherine Martha McEvers, and Michael James McEvers. A daughter from a previous marriage, Susan Castro, her son Jeff, and Susan Castro's brother Scott also survive him. Susan is a teacher in Bettendorf, Iowa. Memorials may be sent to Holy Spirit Episcopal Church here in El Paso. There will be a private memorial service Saturday 19 May, 2:30 PM at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church for family and close friends. He attended Ysleta High School, UTEP (Texas Western College), and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Spangler. He retired from Dover Elevator Co. with 36 years of service and was an honorary member of Local 131 of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Riter, Rev. George Frank,
77, passed away on May 12, 2001. He was born in El Paso, Texas. His roots in El Paso began when his grandfather was the conductor on the first Santa Fe Railroad passenger train that came to El Paso in 1881. He graduated from Austin High School, and received his Bachelor's Degree and Bachelor of Divinity from SMU. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Wabash and the USS Zuni in South Pacific. He was ordained as a Methodist Minister in 1951. Even before he was ordained he was a lay minister and active in church youth ministries. He served Trinity, Glen Arbor and Mountain View United Methodist Churches in El Paso and San Jon, Mountainair, Balmorhea, Goldsmith, First Hobbs, Eunice, Anthony, Ft. Sumner, Lovington, Hillcrest/Loving and Harwood United Methodist Churches in The New Mexico Annual Conference. He was an inspiration to many young people both in church and sporting activities. Upon retiring an returning to El Paso he was Pastor Emeritus at Asbury United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Lee and Frances Allen Riter, and his brother Lewis A. "Tex" Riter. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Lee and Leo Culbertson; nephews Brian and Brad Culbertson and niece Linda Culbertson of Auburn, CA; cousins, Marjorie R. Brown of Glen Rose, TX, Bing and Peggy Browning of El Paso and Ed and Ruby Lee Brown of Granbury, TX. He will be greatly missed by many "adopted" grandchildren. He was on active duty in the U.S. Army for 31 years and was Chief, Department of Pediatrics, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, El Paso, TX, 1971-August 31, 1993 was also a member of Fellow American Academy of Pediatrics from 1970-1993. Ron practiced Pediatrics in Lexington, KY at Humana Corp. at Blue Grass Family Practice for 5 years followed by 2 years at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, NM. CW3 U.S. Army, 71, retired passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2001. He was a resident of El Paso for 43 years and a Mason with Lodge #475 in Swinefort, Germany. Charles was an avid golfer and was on the Board of Directors of George Underwood Golf Course in Fort Bliss. He was in the Army for 22 years, serving in the Korean War and in Germany. Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edith M. SITTON, HENRY CICERO
"Blackie" 82, passed away on May 19, 2001 in Austin, Texas. He was born May 12, 1919 in Tyler, Texas to Jack and Elizabeth Carter. Both parents died soon after his birth and he was adopted by Charlie Messer and Nora Garner Sitton. Blackie served in the Navy during WWII. He was a mechanic and owned "Blackie's Garage" at Doniphan and Thorn in the Upper Valley for 9 years in the 1950's, and also served as the Chief of the Upper Valley Volunteer Fire Department. After closing the garage, he worked for the University of Texas eaching mechanics about automatic transmissions. General Motors hired him as a service representative for Chevrolet Motor Division and later was an instructor in several General Motors Training Centers, retiring in 1985. Blackie was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Fannye P. Sitton, and grandson, James Paul "Jimbo" Sitton. He is survived by his sons, Jim H. Sitton and wife, Mary Ann of El Paso, and Nick B. Sitton and wife Ann of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Judy L. Allen of Hempstead, Texas, Mindy A. Sitton of Austin, Texas, Jo Ann Sitton of Memphis, TN, Brent A. MECKLIN, JAMES H.
"JACK" passed away at his home May 19, 2001 after a long illness. Mr. Mecklin was born November 3, 1905 to Remer Creath and Bertie Clark Mecklin at Mineola, Texas. The family moved to Kingsville, Texas in 1911 where Mr. Mecklin attended public schools and Texas A&I college. In 1928 he moved to Marfa, Texas, engaging in the newspaper business with his father, consolidating the Marfa Era and Big Bend Sentinel. In 1932 Mr. Mecklin left the newspaper business and entered the U.S. Postal service serving as clerk, superintendent, assistant postmaster and postmaster until his retirement in 1969. In 1976 he moved to El Paso, Texas where he resided until his death. Mr. Mecklin was very active in civic, religious and political circles in Marfa, joining the Marfa Volunteer Fire Department in 1932 and serving for 43 years holding all positions including Chief, serving in many capacities as a member of the First Christian Church, chairman of the Marfa Housing Authority, chairman and instructor of the American Red Cross as well as other activities. In El Paso he was an active member of the Bethany Christian Church, the Eastside YMCA, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, boating and fishing. Mr. Mecklin and Hyacinth Hamic were married on May 17, 1930 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1980. Mrs. Mecklin preceded him in death May 28, 1981. Also preceeding him in death were his sisters Remer Bommer, Rosalyn Campbell, Virginia Mecklin, his brother Rupert Mecklin and daughter-in-law Sue Ann Talley Mecklin. Survivors include his Sons, Donald Mecklin and daughter in law Katharine Mecklin of Canutillo, Texas, Ronald Mecklin of Media Pa., four granddaughters, Sharyl Cantrell of Wichita Falls, Texas, Dee Mecklin and Dell Palmer of Pennsylvania, Janet Parker of Phoenix, Ariz., and Grandson Scott Parker of Canutillo, Texas, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. WALKER, HELEN SARAH
age 21, of Sugar Land, TX, died on Saturday, May 19, 2001. She was born September 30, 1979 in Duncan, OK. Helen was a graduate of Clements High School in Sugar Land, where she was an honor student and a member of the Drama Club. She had Just completed her Junior year at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN, majoring in Technical Theater and Computer Science, and minoring in American Sign Language. During her college career she was an honor student, and earned many awards and scholarships, particularly in stage management and production. Beyond all of her personal accomplishments, Helen touched so many with her sense of humor and brillant smile. She will be remembered by all who knew her by these qualities as well as her tremendous energy and unending Joy. 'Packey' 70 yrs, Born Oct. 22, 1930. Passed away in El Paso, TX on May 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 44yrs+ of marriage. Along with his sons Jessie, Joey, Mike. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Aunt Gladis Johnson, Cousins Sunny and wife Etta Brown, his Best friend and longtime co-worker Joe Birch and numerous co-workers who he had while he was working for the Southern Pacific Railroad located in El Paso, TX. Also his sister in law Alene Fain. Jesse was born and raised in Muldoon, Tx. Jesse was a veteran of the Armed Forces, was present in the Korean War where he received 3 medals, Korean SVC Medal, United Nations Medal, National Def SVC Medal. Jesse leaves behind a wonderful wife, Laura of 44 yrs+. Jesse retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad after serving over 41 yrs. During that period he made a lot of friends and enjoyed there friendship over the years. Jesse was a very active throughout the years. He enjoyed helping people for whose lives that he touched. After he retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad he continued to help people when he was able. He was a man of many talents, skills. The Lord has taken him from all of us, But don't be sad because the Lord has a plan for him. And for the rest of us, when the time is right the Lord will reunite us with Jesse. I will look forward to the day when I will be reunited with him. I miss you more each passing day, I have been blessed to have you as a father, I thank you for that. I will always miss you and I love you very much because you are a great man, You are my father. I will always have you in my heart as well as my prayers, your loving son, Mike. Cogar, Carl R. Sr.,
79, of Las Cruces, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 at home. He was born on Nov. 15, 1921 in Clarksburg, W. Virginia to Carl J. Cogar and Hermie Hammond Cogar. Carl was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably for ten years with the 17th and 82nd Airborne during WW II where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was an art teacher, teaching in El Paso, Deming, NM and Las Cruces where he was the owner of El Portal. Carl was also an accomplished violinmaker, and avid model airplane maker and flyer, loved the outdoors and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. was born in Salerno, Italy, to Leopoldo Paolo de Bernardis and Maria Teresa Ruta on January 10, 1916. She passed away in her home in El Paso, Texas, on May 22, 2001. She attended the University of Naples. Early in World War II, she volunteered as a Red Cross nurse in the Italian military hospital in Caserta, Later, she served as an inspector in the provincial government of Terra de Lavoro with responsibility for distribution of relief supplies in 67 villages. She married Dwight Lee Shewmaker in 1946 and came to the United States in 1947. She accompanied him in various military posts in the United States and Germany. In El Paso, she volunteered in the American Red Cross in various capacities in the late l95Os and early 1960s. She then worked as the rehearsal pianist for Ballet El Paso until her retirement. She reared her two children, James Shewmaker, who now lives in Atlanta, and Suzy Shewmaker, who now lives in El Paso. Her husband survives, as do her sisters, Rosalia Lucatorto of Sacramento, California, and Gerarda Fiorillo of Caserta, and her brother, Giovanni de Bernardis of Trapetto, Sicily. Her brother, Ernesto de Bernardis, passed away in Genoa several years ago. Her grandchildren, Steve Shewmaker of Savannah, Georgia, Kelly Fairfield of Omaha, Nebraska, Frank Shewmaker of New Orleans, Louisiana, and her great grandsons, Tuscan and Oliver Fairfield, also survive. Visitation will be at Martin Funeral Home, 3839 Montana, on Friday, May 25, from five to eight in the evening with Rosary at six-thirty, and the memorial Mass will be at the same location at two- thirty the next afternoon.

Brown, Walter Robert
passed away on May 18, 2001 and went home to be with the Lord. He had been ill for some time and was ready to go on. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on January 28, 1928. Walter served in the Marine Corps for 27 years and retired in 1972 and moved to El Paso, Texas. His wife Henrietta Culver whom he met and married in La Paz, Bolivia where he was serving as a Marine Guard at the U.S. Embassy. To this union was born Lucille Ann in May of 1953. Herrera, Jaime "Rabano"
66, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in El Paso, Texas. He was born May 5th, 1935. He is survived by his children; Patricia Rockoff, Jaime Herrera, Jr., Felisa Elias, and Carlos Herrera. Six grandchildren. His brothers, Virgilo Herrera of Juarez, Hugo Herrera of Mexico City, Cesar Herrera of Mexico City, and his sister Amada Herrera de Rodarte of Puebla, Mexico. Many nephews and nieces. He attended the Universidad Del Tech de Monterrey where his major was business administration. In 1960 he was named coach to the Mexican Olympic basketball team in Rome where they made it to the semi-finals. At age 25, he was among the youngest to ever coach an Olympic team. He was an avid sportsman, excelling and setting records in shot put, javelin, basketball and golf. He was retired from his many business interests, resided in El Paso, and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Together they owned Parmelee Radio and Sound in El Paso. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of El Paso since December 14, 1930 and remained an active member until the time of her death. She had worked on the staff of the First Baptist Church's Children's Ministry for 47 years and was a member of the Pilot Club of El Paso. She was a member ol Pi Beta Phi sorority. While attending Purdue, Ethel met Jonathan David Schwartz ("Jonny"), who was there on a football scholarship. Following graduation from Purdue, Ethel and Jonny were married on March 5, 1932 and moved that year to El Paso, where Jonny was employed by Air Reduction Company. Neither Ethel nor Jonny had been to this part of the country before, but they liked it from the beginning and decided to stay and raise their children. Ethel was President of the Junior League oF El Paso in 1945-1946 and was a member of the Tuesday Book Club for 60 years, which remains active today. She made many contributions to the welfare of the community and actively supported the El Paso Symphony Association, board member of the Women's Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, the El Paso Historical Society, the El Paso Museum of Art, St. Clement's Episcopal School and the University of Texas at El Paso. She and her husband were members of St. Clement's Episcopal Church for over 65 years. Jonny was Chief Executive Officer of S.E.C. Corporation, an El Paso based industrial gas and chemical manufacturer and distributor, which merged with UGI Corporation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1978. Ethel is survived by her sister, Marjorie M. Hughey, her daughter, Sandra S. Hoover and husband, Robert T. Hoover, Jr. and her son Jonathan D. Schwartz, Jr. and wife Josephine (Jody) P. Schwartz. Grandchildren are Max R. Prestridge III, Sharon P. Thompson and her husband J.D. Thompson, Sandra P. McKinney and her husband, Scot W. McKinney, Laura S. Smith and her husband W. Robert Smith, Jonathan D. Schwartz III and his wife, Tracy R. Schwartz, James P. Schwartz and his wife Joy R. Schwartz and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jonny, died August 9, 1994 and her daughter, Cecily Schwartz Prestridge, passed away on October 14, 1996. After completing H.S., he served as a policeman and as a prison guard, in South Dakota, becoming a gifted fingerprint expert. He left SD when he heard of a job opportunity at the F.B.I. HQ Fingerprint Records Division, Washington, D.C. Completing college and Law School in 1934, at what is now George Washington University, he became one of "Hoover's Teenagers," a group of new and energetic F.B.I. agents who looked too young to be going after the hardened criminals in the 1930's. He came to El Paso in 1941, as an F.B.I. Special Agent, and retired here after 31 years of service. He also pioneered the Law Enforcement Program at EPCC, in the 1960-70'S, serving as Director and Instructor for over 11 years. passed peacefully in his sleep May 19, 2001. He resided with his daughter Robin Blackmon, for the last 10 months in Stockton, CA. Max was a longtime resident of El Paso, working in the life insurance business. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. A Captain in the Air Force, he served in both WWII and the Korean Conflict, earning a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. He will be missed by his many friends and family. His wife of 45 years, Vicki French Looney passed away in 1996. Max is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Lynn and Roland T. Wolfe of Chesterfield, Missouri and 2 granddaughters, Tara and Ashley, his daughter and son-in-law Robin Lea and Gary Blackmon of Stockton, CA and son Mark Scott Looney of Bowling Green, KY and grandson Matthew. MILANO, MSGR. A. JAMES
was born in Websterville, Vermont, on September 20, 1912 to Rocco and Madeline Milano. He was the second youngest of four brothers (Joe, Frank, Lawrence, and Mike) and two sisters (Rose and Angelina). Lawrence is his only surviving sibling. Hi parents came from Italy to Ellis Island and from there moved to Websterville, where his father was a stone cutter at a granite quarry. His mother was a homemaker. He studied with the Graymoor Friars during high school and attended seminary at Catholic University in Washington, DC from 1932-1940, where he received a B. A. degree. Msgr. Milano was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1940 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, by the Most Rev. Joseph Corrigon for the Society of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. In November, 1943, Msgr Milano entered active military duty as a chaplain. He served in various posts in the Pacific operations and was discharged from the Army in 1947. Msgr. Milano traveled to El Paso and asked to serve in the El Paso diocese in 1949. Bishop Metzger accepted him and later incardinated him into the El Paso diocese. Msgr. Milano served as pastor of Santa Rosa Parish in Pecos from 1948 to 1961, and as pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Silver City from 1961 until his retirement in 1987. In 1974, Msgr. Milano was named a monsignor by Pope Paul VI. In 1987, Msgr. Milano was named "Man of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce of Silver City in recognition of his 26 years of service as pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. According to the article in the Silver City Daily Press, Msgr. Milano has given his professional and personal time to such causes as helping the poor and needy in the community, supporting youth organizations, and educating the youth in the community concerning moral issues such as abortion and sex education." Msgr. Milano was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans and served as an Army chaplain during World War II until illness contracted in the Fiji Islands sent him stateside to a hospital in Massachusetts where he remained for five months in 1946, according to the article in the Silver City newspaper. Since his retirement in 1987, Msgr. Milano had lived in El Paso and served as chaplain to the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration at their monastery on Cotton Street. On December 20, 1990, he celebrated his 50th anniversary of priestly ordination with a Solemn High Mass according to the Roman Rite at the Monastery chapel. Aside from his brother, Lawrence, Msgr. Milano is survived by his housekeeper of 37 years, Hope Arciero, who has faithfully cared for him until his final days at his home in El Paso where he had lived since his retirement. He is also survived by Peggy Milano, Kathleen Watson, Joan Buxton, Kenneth Milano, Sandra Granger, Catherine Milano, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many dear friends too numerous to count. Msgr. Milano also served with the following organizations: Chaplain of Roncalli, Chaplain of Knights of Columbus-4th degree Knight, Chaplain of Catholic Daughters Court of Santa Barbara, and Chaplain of Alhambra Guadalupe Caravan 234. Msgr. James Milano will lie in state Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Christ the Savior Church. Rosary Service will be held Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. at Christ the Savior Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at Christ the Savior Church. Burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. 69, passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2001. She was born on June 25, 1931 to Ernest and Diane Friedman and was a lifelong resident of El Paso. Doris was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was active and served as past president of the Sisterhood of Congregation B'Nai Zion where she was also active in several other functions and committees. Borzi, Joseph Frances
81, legendary member of the community passed away on Saturday May 26 2001. He was born on Valentines day, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York. Joseph Borzi spent his adult life in El Paso after receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1945. In 1943 he met and married his life long wife, Nini Borzi. Joseph Borzi was decorated by his government while serving in Panama, he became the Army heavyweight boxing champion and later became a professional fighter, then a well known boxing referee. Over the next several years he was to win several hundred hand-ball tournaments while representing his beloved Y.M.C.A., a sanctuary where he forged friendships that were to last a lifetime. Joseph Borzi had roles in two major motion pictures, was an accepted part of Hollywood society and counted among his friends Frank Sinatra, Linda Darnell and Don Cornell. A few years ago a chapter was dedicated to him in a book entitled, "The toughest men in Texas". He was also honored by the Texas legislature for exceptional service to his community. Joe Borzi was known for his bone crushing handshake as well as his tender heart. He is survived by two great grandchildren, six grandchildren, four sisters and a son. The Borzi family requests that anyone that wishes to make a donation in his memory please do so to the Central Y.M.C.A. Campbell, Charles L.
born March 15, 1923 in Benjamin, TX passed away May 26, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Charles served his country with distinction as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He was in the 1st Infantry Division in Europe and received the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in Normandy, France.
