"Vernie Stembridge was an outstanding academic physician who made exceptionally valuable contributions to UT Southwestern in many different ways," UT Southwestern President Kern Wildenthal said. "For decades the faculty and students always looked to him for leadership and advice. His integrity and wisdom were exceptional, and he will be impossible to replace." In 1991, the University of Texas Board of Regents named Stembridge an Ashbel Smith Professor, one of its highest honors.
