English Jesse HOWELL, Jr., son of English Jesse HOWELL, Sr. and Elvira DAVIDSON CURTIS HOWELL. Born 31 Mar 1840 in Pope County, AR. Died 13 Mar 1913 in Chatfield, Navarro County, TX where he is buried. First wife's name is not verified but she was the mother of Nettie HOWELL (married Dr. Robert LOVE). Second wife was Minerva WEBB (1846-1876), daughter of Hampton N. WEBB and Martha ROWLAND. She was the mother of Zebbie Lee HOWELL and Dora HOWELL (married Marvin TURNER) of Ellis County. About 1878 he married Jennie WHARTON, mother of William E. HOWELL, and moved to Ellis County where he is listed on the 1880 US census. He later moved to Navarro County. He was a veteran of the Civil War, June 1861-May 1865, 3rd AR Cavalry, Co E under Capt. Dave BYARS. In addition to farming, he operated a cotton gin and livery stable.

HOWELL Siblings

William E. HOWELL (1879-1960?), Dora L. HOWELL TURNER (1873-1950), Zebbie Lee HOWELL (1872-1951), and Nettie HOWELL LOVE (1862-1922). Their family settled east of Waxahachie on Red Oak Creek and then lived in Sardis. Lee attended school in Red Oak Creek and later in Waxahachie in the old Marvin College Building which was under state management. He also attended Polytechnic Institute located in Midlothian. Lee HOWELL married Laura MIDDLETON of Sardis, 21 Oct 1896. They had ten children. He was a Methodist minister in Ellis County from 1902 until his retirement in the fall of 1943. He died 8 Aug 1951 in Waxahachie. They were the children of English Jesse HOWELL,Jr of AR and TX.

Dr. William Robert LOVE, husband of Nettie HOWELL LOVE, married 1 Mar 1883. Probably married in Ellis County but later lived in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX.

Aunt Nettie [HOWELL] LOVE and Robert, grandbaby, written on back of picture. Probably taken around 1915 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX.

  

Marvin Bishop TURNER and Dora L. HOWELL wedding picture. He was the son of Walter M. TURNER & Almarinda BRADSHAW. She was the daughter of English Jesse HOWELL, Jr. and Minerva Ann WEBB. Children: Ernest, Lee, Merwin, Ruby, Faye, E.J, Ludie, Estell, Howard, Harry Key,and Amos. The TURNER family came to Ellis County around 1855 from GA and TN. The HOWELLS settled in Ellis County during the late 1870's moving from Russellville, Pope County, AR. Marvin and Dora married 29 Nov 1894 in Ellis County where they lived until 1907. They moved to Jack County and remained there until their deaths in 1950. They are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Jacksboro, Jack County, TX.

HOWELL child unidentified. Probably a child or grandchild of Rev. Z. L. HOWELL and Laura (MIDDLETON) HOWELL of Ellis County. Taken in Dallas, TX early 1900's.

"First Methodist Church, Forreston, Texas

Z.L. Howell served this church in his early ministry. He was sent back in 1943, and again in 1944. He is now in his 5th year as pastor.

Wm. E. [Howell], the son of Rev. and Mrs. Z. L. Howell was converted in this church, and is now a Chaplain in the U.S. Air Force."


Zebbie Lee HOWELL, born 7 Feb 1972 near Russellville, Pope County, AR, was the son of English Jesse HOWELL, Jr. and Minerva Ann WEBB HOWELL (1846-1875). E. J. HOWELL and third wife, Jennie WHARTON HOWELL moved to Ellis County late 1870's. Z. L. HOWELL was the brother of Dora L. HOWELL TURNER, half-brother of Nettie HOWELL LOVE and William E. HOWELL. He died 8 Aug 1951 in Waxahachie, TX.
