B. Vinson with first bale of cotton and sample. First bale picked in Ellis County that year. He lived and farmed land between Rankin and Avalon at a little community known as Austonia. A prize was given for the first bale of cotton sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and consisted of gifts of merchandise from local merchants. The sample from the bale is what cotton buyers looked at to grade the quality and set a price per pound. Austonia was a black community consisting of a church, school, and cemetery.
