Alma School Teachers 1938-1945

Linton Whitfill

Linton Whitfill of Alma has been elected superintendent of the Alma public school for next year, succeeding Lloyd McCall, who has been elected to the English department of the Ennis High School for next year. Whitfill is a graduate of Trinity University of the class of 1936.

In addition to being the school superintendent, Mr. Whitfill also taught the high school grades in Alma.

  

Mrs. Jewell Littlejohn

Mrs. Jewell Littlejohn was Principal for the years of 1938 through 1940 and she also taught the upper grades.

  

Miss Odessa Whitesides

Miss Odessa Whitesides taught the high school grades in addition to being the Girls Basketball Coach.

  

Florine Bernard Brock

1938-39 Miss Florine Bernard taught first grade and married Mr. Brock during that year.

1939-40 Mrs. Florine Brock taught second grade the next year.

  

Miss Oneta Jackson

1940-41 Miss Oneta Jackson was a wonderful teacher who taught third, fourth and possibly fifth grades. In 1941, Miss Jackson taught the entire class, boys included, to knit. The Red Cross furnished wool yarn for the sweaters that were knitted in that class to be sent to England as our part of the war effort. Miss Jackson was a favorite of many of her students and taught in Alma several years.

  

Mrs. Crouch

Mrs. Crouch taught for at least one year in Alma and brought language studies into our lives by giving us Spanish lessons. All of our teachers broadened our horizons and made us appreciate the gift of learning.

  

Mrs Jeanne Colvin

Mrs Jeanne Colvin taught 5th and 6th grades in 1942-43. She also taught 7th and 8th grades in 1944-45.

Mrs. Fred A. Newton

Mrs. Fred A. Newton taught 7th Grade in 1943-44. She was a wonderful teacher who read the classics to her students. She rode the bus from her home in Ennis to Alma and back each day. She also told us stories about her dog, Esso, a big lassie-like dog that was loved by the students.

Mrs. H. T. Lester

Mrs. H. T. Lester who lived in Ennis taught 6th Grade in Alma in 1943-44. Her husband, Mr. Lester was a wonderful teacher in Ennis High School for many years.

Miss Philonise Whitfill

Miss Philonise Whitfill served as Principal during the school year of 1944-45 and also taught classes.

Mr. Bob McCrady

Mr. Bob McCrady was the County Superintendent for the year 1944-45.

  

Bill Collard

One of the nicest people that Alma students would see every school day was our beloved janitor, Bill Collard. He always had a smile and pleasant greeting to the students. His wife, Pauline was a beautiful lady with dark curly hair. They were a handsome pair in Alma.
