    NOTES: Consists of correspondence and legal material (photocopied) 
           concerning the sale and settlement of land at the Quaker Colony 
           in Estacado, Crosby County, Texas.  Includes letters received by 
           Paris Cox, George M. Hunt, and J. W. Dalton.
           Texas colonizer. Born in 1846, Cox was a Quaker from North 
           Carolina who moved to Indiana. Later traded his Boxley, Indiana, 
           sawmill business for 50,000 acres of land in Crosby County, 
           Texas. Came to Texas in 1876, and sold land for $0.25 an acre. By 
           1879, a Quaker colony was established near the town of Marietta, 
           Texas. Named after Cox's wife, Marietta was re-named Estacado in 
           1886. By 1893, most of the colonists had left the South Plains. 
           Cox died in 1888.

           The Espuela Land and Cattle Company, Ltd., a British syndicate, 
           founded the Spur Ranch in the early 1880s.  The ranch was located 
           in Dickens, Kent, Crosby, and Garza counties of West Texas and 
           encompassed approximately 439,000 acres.

    NOTES: Three photographs of ranch scenes.
           Collection bulks largely with legal documents including warranty 
           and quit claim deeds dating from the 1870s.  Contains patents to 
           large tracts of land in Crosby, Dickens, and Floyd Counties, 
           financial documents such as mortgages on land and releases, and 
           copies of wills used to establish ownership.  Correspondence 
           pertaining to titles, mortgages, and foreclosures are also 
           included.  Collection also contains correspondence with land 
           commissioners regarding titles and leases, as well as 
           correspondence regarding cattle sales, cattle count, and brands 
           from 1915-18,  sale notices, and field notes by a surveyor.
           Manager of Z-L Ranch in Crosby County, Texas, from 1918-1919.  
           Also associated with Half-Circle S Ranch and Crosbyton Cattle 
           Company.  These ranches all occupied land which had originally 
           been patented to the Kentucky Cattle Raising Company of 
           Louisville. Later owned by A.W. Husdon and then by Frank Cross.

    NOTES: Consists of a letter press book of the Two-Buckle Ranch 
           describing cattle, supplies, wages and farming and ranching 
           conditions.

           The Kentucky Cattle Company, organized by the Tilford Brothers at 
           Louisville, Kentucky in 1883, started the Two-Buckle Ranch in 
           Blanco Canyon in 1884, with C. M. Tilford as resident manager.  
           At its peak, the ranch was stocked with nearly 14,000 head of 
           cattle and 130 saddle horses and covered over 200 sections of 
           land in Crosby County.  The Panic of 1893 caused the Kentucky 
           Cattle Company to go out of business and sell the entire herd.  
           Over the next several years, the ranch was leased and eventually 
           parceled out to various owners.

           Headquartered in Delaware, the Dickens Cattle Corporation was 
           created out of Division 8 of the old Matador Land and Cattle 
           Company.  It operated in Motley, Cottle, Dickens, Crosby and 
           Floyd counties until 1853, when its outstanding securities and 
           land were purchased by W. J. Collier, with whom Rex Robinson was 
           a silent partner.  At that time the corporation was dissolved.

           Born Jan. 22, 1904, in Floydada, Texas, the son of an area 
           rancher.  Attended Texas A&M, Hardin-Simmons University and Texas 
           Technological College, where he received his BA in Education in 
           1926. Taught in rural schools in Crosby County and Ozona, in 
           Crockett County, where he taught history, coached basketball and 
           became superintendent of the Ozona Public Schools.  Married 
           Pauline Maddox in 1930.  Retired in Lubbock to look after their 
           ranch properties.  Published several articles on area history and 
           was a charter member of the Ranching Heritage Association, where 
           he remained active.  Died on Feb. 28, 1981.  Mrs. Denham died on 
           Dec. 18, 1984.

           brother Lee, a Baptist minister, to Plainview, Texas, in 1907.  
           After completing college, Gillon worked as a salesman for Reese-
           Carriker Lumber Company.  Married Ruby Ellis in 1917, served in 
           the Army during World War I.  Settled on a farm near the Pleasant 
           Hill Community in Crosby County. Son, Walter, born Sept, 11, 
           1937.  The Gillons were active in both school and church affairs. 
           Died 1971.

           Odessa.  He died in 1914, and she married R.T. Waddell in 1922.

           had joined the BS Ranch outside Colorado City, Texas with Harry 
           Smith.  In 1908, formed the C. B. Livestock Company with the 
           Coonley brothers of Chicago, Illinois and soon thereafter bought 
           the 2-Buckle Ranch.  It was through the course of the development 
           of these ranchlands that Crosbyton, Texas came about.  In 1910, 
           built a 39 mile rail line that connected Crosbyton to  Lubbock, 
           Texas.  In 1915, married the former Cora Drake, the marriage 
           produced four children.  Also, developed a 374 sections of 
           rangeland in Terrell County, Texas.  The land, bought from Sydney 
           Webb, included the townsite of Dryden and in 1930 moved his 
           family there after suffering heavy losses in Gila, New Mexico as 
           a result of the depression.  Later, moved to San Antonio, Texas 
           where he devoted his time to developing oil and mineral 
           properties until his death in 1947.

           plantation owner.  Came to Texas in 1887.  Lived in various 
           places in Northern Texas and Oklahoma.  Eventually settled near 
           Ralls in Crosby County, Texas.  Later moved to Lamb County, 
           Texas, near Sudan.  Began keeping his diary on March 28, 1914, 
           and made regular entries until 1964.  Married Sallie Edna Newton 
           in 1903.  They had six children.  Their youngest son was killed 
           in World War II.  DeLoach died in 1967.

           Part of collection, 243 leaves, is on microfilm.
           Established in 1878 by Quaker colonists led by Paris Cox, this 
           was the first Anglo settlement in Crosby County, Texas, and the 
           original county seat of Crosby County.  The population of 600 
           declined after the county seat was moved to Emma in 1891, and by 
           1895, after the Quakers moved to Friendswood (Brazoria County, 
           Texas), the colony was disbanded.
