Unfortunately the census taker in Upton County did not have as good penmanship as did Miss Gray of Crane County. Many of the names are difficult to decipher, so errors are common in the following section.  In the slot designated "Street, avenue, road, etc." this census taker often gives a number (a slot omitted by Miss Gray) which are not numerically in order, but may have some meaning: houses numbered within the same street designation may at least be on the same street. Therefore the street number will precede all house numbers that follow. It is interesting to note that most Gulf housing in Upton County rented for $7.50 whereas in Crane County most rented for $5.00, although a few rented for $7.50. Most of the bosses, with larger houses, lived in Upton County, but that fact does not completely solve the difference. In cases where rent was $15.00 it appears that two employees (father and son) lived in the same house, but each was charged rent. |
