Coleman, Texas Legal Description: |
Between 1923 and 1930, the house at 415 South Concho Street was removed and a service station was built facing southwest across the corner, and was addressed as 118 West Walnut Street.
"The building at 409 South Concho Street
was built as an automotive service station between
1923 and 1930. John B. Norman, Jr. grew up in the
service station operated by his father and had
operated this station for a number of years as
partners. Norman and Carl McNutt purchased the
service station from John B. Norman, Sr. In June
1949, Earle Smith purchased the building and site
from John Norman, but it remained under lease to the
Gulf Oil Company. The station remained the Norman
and McNutt Gulf Station through the early 1950s, but
had become the McNutt Service Station by 1954, with
the address changing to 415 South Concho Street. By
1958, the station was Hamilton Service Station,
where it continued until about 1960, changing to the
Tisdale Service Station, operated by James Tisdale
by 1962. By 1964 it had become the Scott Service
Station. By 1968, it was the Schulz Fina Station,
then Gilliams Fina Station, owned and operated by
Leon and Warren Gilliam in 1970, followed by B&M
Fina Service Station in 1971. In 1972 and 1973, it
was known as Scott Oil Company Station No. 2. In
February 1975, it was purchased by Charlie Cullins,
with the station becoming Cullins Downtown
Fina. By November 1977, the business was Howard’s
Downtown Fina and Coleman Radiator Shop, owned and
operated by Louise and J. C. Howard. By 1980, the
number of service stations had declined, and the old
gasoline filling station sat vacant for a number of
years. Mark and Brenda Stovall bought the station
and surrounding lots on this half of the block and
remodeled it as an extension of their antique store
in the early 2000s. About 2013 Michael Taylor
restored this station with early Sinclair Service
Station fixtures.” (From Looking
Backwards, 1940-1980 by Ralph Terry, 2016.)
