This 1916 map was the first to include this part of East Walnut Street At 501 East Walnut Street, a single story dwelling was on the southwest corner of Block 29 in Lot 3. A second structure with a porch on the south side was located to the northeast of the dwelling. Another a small building, probably an outhouse, was near the center of the Block, on the northeast corner of the lot. Then no changes on on this block between 1916 and 1923, but by 1930, many new houses and businesses were built on Block 29, but at 501 East Walnut, there was no change oin the dwelling, but the building to the northeast had been removed and a dwelling was built, facing San Marcos Street, on the north west side of Lot 3 and two dwellings built to the east, as well as a service station on the southeast corner of Block 29.

Mrs. Lula Parks
had a beauty parlor at 501 East Walnut
Street. She also resided at
this address. Rooming at this address was
Miss Irma Beall, an office
assistant for Dr. W. L. Jennings; and Miss Pauline
Beall, an operator for
Southwest

Service Station, located at 501 East
Walnut Street, was
built by Otto Schick in 1922.
Schick’s Bakery was located on the
same lot, but was destroyed by fire in
October 1947, not having been in use
for several years.
The filling station had been the Hester
Service Station in early 1944, and the
Smith Brothers Service Station, operated
by Leon D. and Houston Smith in late 1944,
and Bailey’s Texaco Service Station by
February 1947. This became the
Woodard Service Station by 1950.
Jackie Hammonds owned this Texaco Station

Bailey's Texaco Service Station, 1948 (taken while laying a new drain line) In the background of this picture is seen the service station at 417 East Walnut Street, and the house with the tall attic at 415 East Walnut Street was the home of Walter Schick. The Schick Bakery, which was closed by this time, is in the shadows, under the trees, further west. This service station at 501 East Walnut, at the right of this picture, was built between 1930 and 1944. .....................................................
