The Coleman Office Building was built in 1927 by the J. C. Penney Company.


"In 1929, 118 West Pecan Street, sometimes called 118 - 120 West Pecan Street, was occupied by the J. C. Penney Company on the first floor.  This department store was managed by R. A. Finney.  The remaining 5 upper floors were occupied by various businesses.  It was known as the Coleman Office Building."   (Coleman City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)

J. C. Penney Began Operation In City Over 8 Years Ago

Under the management of R. A. Finney,  J. C. Penney Company opened one of it’s finest stores at Coleman in 1928.  J. C. Penney is located in the new Coleman Office building, occupying the street floor.  J. C. Penney company has always taken an active part in civic affairs or any movement for the advancement of the community.  Being a member of the Chamber of Commerce, they are constantly striving to bring the utmost to retail merchandising through their untiring efforts.  Their knowledge of and long standing in the communities they serve have definitely placed them among the leaders of this trade territory.  The tremendous buying power made possible through the many channels and the enormous outlet through their many stores established over a nation-wide territory make it possible to offer their customers many values in quality merchandise.

The street floor contains several complete departments, including the shoe, men’s hats, piece goods, ready-to-wear, notions and many other items.  The mezzanine department is devoted to the infants wear, millinery, dresses and other ready-to-wear.  Mr. Finney has as his capable assistant C. P. Legate, in charge of the display and advertising.  J. C. Penney company has stead-fastly gone forward, enjoying a splendid business each season of the year.  The company wishes to thank their many loyal friends and looks to the future for a continued service to them.

The Coleman County State Bank purchased the building in 1944, and currently occupies several floors, with business occupying other floors.
