This was first the location of the Rose Livery Stable, which fronted 204-208 South Commercial Avenue and extends west across what became an alley. The part of the livery stable at this location was addressed as 411 1/2 Commercial Avenue in 1888. By 1893, this livery stable had become the stable of E. H. Napier, and fronted West Pecan Street, extending the frontage to West Pecan Street. By 1898, it had become the stable of B. C. Howell. B. C. Howell Livery, Feed Stable
and Dray Line, 1898.
From the picture, you can now see that the Kinney and Roach Grocery Store was in the east side of the downstairs and White and Malone Dry Goods was in the west side of the building (west side). The telephone exchange was located in the upper story and the door from the sidewalk to the upstairs was there at this time, with the stairs going to it. I feel that there was not partition wall upstairs at that time, but was added by 1948 when Brownie Seals had living quarters and a photography studio located over the west side. In 1916 the west building housed a printing shop and in 1930 it was used for storage. Interesting little black objects at the edge of the sidewalk … maybe to tie horse’s reins to? "In 1929, J. F. Henderson and Son was located at 109 West Pecan Street. It was owned by J. F. Henderson and J. F. Henderson, Jr." (Coleman City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.) View maps of the Original
