south side - 1923 map

This drawing, from a 1923 map, shows  the same one story dwelling as in 1916,with the shed still on the northeast portion of this lot, but with an automobile shed added to the south side of the lot.  A porch was added to the southeast corner of the dwelling.

The 1900 McLennan County, Texas census for Precinct 5, taken 30 June 1910, lists William H. Harris, age 47; his wife, Sarah L. Harris, 41; children: Elisha, 22; James A., 17; Ada A., 14; Mary C., 10; Annie L., 5; and step-children: Bessie Langston,18; Jessy C. Langston,12; and Vernon, 10.  William Harris is shown as a farmer, renting land.  Sometime between 1900 and 1910, the Harris family moved to Coleman County, Texas.

The 1910 Coleman County census for Precinct 1, taken 29 April 1910, lists William H. Harris (age 56, married twice, this marriage for 16 years, was a farmer, renting land); Sarah L. Harris (age 51, wife of William H. Harris, had 10 children, but only 6 were living at this time); Mollie F. Harris (age 20, daughter); Lenora Harris (age 14, daughter); Jessie B. Langston (age 22, step-son); and Lavada Lewis (age 11, niece).

William H. Harris, born in Tennessee on May 7, 1853, died November 27, 1910, at age 57, was buried at the Coleman Cemetery in Map Page 3, Section II.

The 1920 Coleman County census for the city of Coleman, Llano Street, lists Sarah Lenora Harris (age 61, a widow, owned the dwelling), Annie L. "Lenora" Harris (age 24, daughter of Sarah Harris); Thomas U. Langston (age 29, son of Sarah Harris); Ralph V. Langston (age 2 4/12, a grandson of Sarah Harris).  Apparently, Sarah Harris and her family moved to the city of Coleman, and bought or built a house on Llano Street, sometime after April 1910.

Sarah Lenora (Hubbard) Harris, born in Mississippi on October 20, 1858, died February 17, 1926, was also buried at the Coleman Cemetery in Map Page 3, Section II, beside her husband.

It appears the one story dwelling, that occupied this lot at 511 (305) South Llano Street in 1916 and 1923, was removed and a larger two story dwelling, probably for a boarding house, was built on the same site between 1923 and 1929.  In 1929, a single woman, an adult family of four, and five single women were living at this location.

"In 1929, Miss Lenora Harris was residing at 511 South Llano Street.  She was a saleslady at Gray Mercantile Company.  She was the owner of this dwelling.  Also residing at this address was Robert L. Lowry, and his wife Bessie.  He was a building contractor with his office at 300 West Live Oak Street.  Also living at this address were Ray V. Lowry, a salesman at J. C. Penney Company; and Richard Lowry.  Rooming at this address were Mrs. Flo Gordon, a clerk at C. R. Jeanes; Miss Agatha Hamilton, an office assistant for R. H. Cochran; Miss Grace Hornsby, an operator at Southwest Telephone Company; Miss Anna Mae McMillon, a stenographer for the Coleman Mutual Aid Association; and Miss Jessie Miller, an operator at Southwest States Telephone Company."  (An alternate earlier address for 511 South Llano Street was 305 South Llano Street.)   (Coleman City Directory, 1929 - Hudspeth.)

In November 2009, Holly S. Norris sold the property to Linda Kugle.  In November 2011, Linda Kugle sold the property to Dalton and Cynthia Traylor.  In September 2016, the property was transferred from the Traylors to the Coleman ISD due to taxes not being paid.  In September 2019, the property was purchased in tax sale by Cecilia Ryan of Austin, Texas.  Before she could move to Coleman there was a fire which totaled the house.  In March 2020, the property was cleared by the City of Coleman.
