Coleman, Texas Legal Description: |
"The home of Joe and
Claudean Cervenka at 218 Fifth Avenue will be one of the homes included
on Coleman County Medical Center Auxiliary’s Tour of Homes scheduled for
Sunday, December 3. If you enjoy looking at old houses, check this
one out. Joe and Claudean Cervenka’s home, at 218 Fifth Avenue, is
99 years old. It was built in 1901 by Robert Veitch Wood, Sr., who
came to Coleman in 1885 at the age of 15. The original house had
six rooms and two porches which cost $1000 to build and was completed in
three months. In 1923 the second story was added and gave the four
bedroom home a total of thirteen rooms.
"Robert Wood’s son, Robert, Jr. (Bob) was one of the youngest flying officers of World War I. After the war, he worked in Venezuela and eventually returned to Coleman to join his father in the Coleman National Farm Loan Association. After his father’s death in 1935, Bob and his wife, Girlie, moved into his parent’s home, cared for his mother until her death and continued living in the residence until the early sixties. Bob then sold the house to Dr. H. E. Howard, a Coleman dentist, and his wife, Jeanie. They and their four children lived there until they sold the house to Joe and Claudean in 1966. The Cervenka’s think it is interesting to note that all three owners - the Wood’s, the Howard’s and the Cervenka’s - were all Presbyterians."
