Coleman, Texas Legal Description: |
"In 1929, Grandville
Riley, and his wife Rosa, were residing at 2001 South
Commercial Avenue, which in 1929 was called the first
house on the east side, south of Needham
Street. (Apparently
house numbers had not been assigned to this address
at this time.) He was a
farmer. Also living at this address was Robert
G. Riley, a student." (Coleman City Directory, 1929 -
Hudspeth.) (Note from
Ralph Terry: It is not known if 2001 South
Commercial Avenue was the location of Granddille
Riley's home ... it could have been located
further south.) "In March 1954, Delma Johnson began construction on a new super service station at the corner of Roselawn Drive and South Commercial Avenue adjacent to the Delma Johnson Motor Company. The station was leased to the Continental Company, and was known as the Wilbur Clarke Conoco Service Station (shown here in 1956, image taken by Hugh Capps), located at 2001 South Commercial Avenue. In 1961, this was the Fitzhugh Conoco Station. By 1962, the station had become the M. E. Maples Conoco Station. The station was Woodard’s Conoco Station in 1964, giving Frontier Savings stamps. In 1969, the station was Dobbins Conoco Station. The Leslie Dobbins Cosden Station was across South Commercial Avenue. In 1970, the station was Steffey’s Conoco, owned by Arthur Steffey, open seven days a week and gave S&H Green Stamps, with double stamps on Wednesday." (Looking Backwards, 1940-1980 by Ralph Terry, page 103.) Fire at Wilbur Clarke's Service Station in 1955. 2001 South Commercial Avenue, December 2005 |
