The 1923 map shows a
small one story dwelling at what became 1102
South Commercial Avenue.
The address is shown as 900 South Commercial
Avenue,
which appears to be an error on the map, as
the 1000 block
is north of this block and the 1200 block is
south.
In 1928, this
dwelling was removed and the West Texas
Utilities Company built an ice station at this
location, which was addressed as 1100 in
1930. By 1948, a frame addition was made
to the north side of the ice station, which
was stuccoed. Appliances were on display
in this addition, and were sold to the
public. At this time, the original ice
station was addressed as 1102 South Commercial
Avenue and the addition was shown as 1100
South Commercial Avenue.

"In 1928, West Texas
Utilities Company (located at 100
Cottonwood Street) built an ice station
at 1102 South Commercial Avenue. It
measured 22 x 45 feet, exceeding in dimensions
any station the company has built, and was set
back 30 feet from the property line. The
station was of Spanish design, the type of
architecture which the West Texas Utilities
Company was found to be so adaptable in
similar buildings throughout the territory it
serves. Fire resisting materials were
used in the building, with the walls of brick,
covered with stucco. The floors and
serving platforms were of concrete and the
roof of mission tile of variegated colors. A
series of walls and arches made especially
unique by tile inserts of mosaic design and
decorations of ornamental iron, combined to
screen the serving platforms. A small
tower, combining Spanish and Byzantine
architecture and ornamented with a brightly
colored tile dome, topped the roof at the
front. The ice vault, of 20 ton
capacity, was kept below freezing temperature
by a motor driven refrigerating machine which
was equipped with an automatic control.
Loss of ice through melting was eliminated by
this device. The station was loaded from
the back side, preventing delay or
inconvenience to customers while the vault was
being refilled. A small office was
included. Concrete driveways led from
the streets to the serving platforms.
Flower beds were included and were filled with
shrubbery and vines. A double electric
sign, visible from either street, was placed
at the corner of the property and beautified
with ornamental iron and shrubbery. A
flood light was placed in the angle formed by
the signs, flooding the building with light at
night.
"This ice service station
of West Texas Utilities Company (later Coleman
Ice and Cold Storage Company) did not make
ice, only sell it. The ice was made at
the plant which was located on Cottonwood
Street, behind the courthouse. In 1977,
J. E. Stevens Company remodeled the old West
Texas Utilities Company building for a
warehouse. The ice service station
provided a closer pick up place for ice if you
lived on the south side of Coleman.
Between 1930 and 1948, a frame addition was
made to the north side of the old West Texas
Utilities ice station building. By 1954,
the Coleman Ice and Cold Storage Company had
closed and the building was occupied by
Gandy’s Dairies, Inc. Bill Stiles was
the manager in 1962. Gandy’s remained at
this location until after 1976. By 1981,
their address was shown as 103 West Fourth
Street (probably the Gandy agent), but by
1987, they were back at 1102 South Commercial
Avenue. No telephone number for Gandy
Dairies, Inc. was listed after 1996. In
its later years, the building stayed vacant
and the parking lot was used by Gandy’s trucks
making deliveries to different places. At some
point the frame addition on the north side was
removed, but the slab remains. The
building was restored about 2005, and became
the location of Coleman Communications – Mid
Tex Cellular, agent for West Central
Wireless." (Looking Backwards,
1940-1980, compiled by Ralph Terry)

Ice Company ice station was located at 1102 South
Commercial Avenue."
(Coleman City Directory,

(Note: The main
plant of West Texas Utilities
Company was located on the north side of West
Cottonwood, northwest of
the courthouse, where West Street ends.
Apparently the ice station
located at 1102 South Commercial Avenue was an
ice distribution place for
West Texas Utilities Company.

1954, Gandy's Creamery was located at
1102 South Commercial
Avenue.
