Maps show a house at 601 South Commercial Avenue as early as 1909. The maps don’t cover this part of Coleman any earlier than 1909. That location was pretty much out of town before that time, as Coleman was developing more to the west of downtown.

restaurant was located at 2000 South Commercial Avenue
(where Don Luis is now and before that the Dairy
Queen) as early as 1954.About 1961, the Dairy Dip drive-in building was moved from 2000 South Commercial Avenue to 601 South Commercial Avenue. The building remained there, and was enlarged from time to time, but different businesses were located there. ...............

1962, the Dairy Dip Restaurant was located
at 601 South Commercial Avenue. It was owned
by Wayne Waits, and featured "Soft Ice Cream, Soft
Drinks, Sandwiches, Steaks, Hamburgers, Chicken
and Shrimp Baskets." It was open 11:00 am to
11:00 pm, 7 Days a Week. Their telephone
number was 625-4508." (Polk's

the Burger House was located at 601 South

a Coleman High School Band Calender of the fall
of 1971 through spring 1972, the owner of the Burger House
is shown as Mrs. Jimmy Moore. (As shown in the General
Telephone Directories of 1969 through 1972, the
Burger House remained located at 601 South
Commercial Avenue, but the telephone number
changed to 625-5779 in 1969. The Burger
House or any other restaurant is not shown at 601
South Commercial Avenue in the telephone directory
of 1973 or later, so it must have closed in early
1973.)

For a while in 1977, Bill Tate, fur and hide buyer, owned J-L Fur and Hide at this location. ...............
In May 1977, Joy’s Country Kitchen, owned and operated by Joy Benjamin was at 601 South Commercial Avenue. It was open six days a week and closed on Sundays, and was still operating in May 1979. There was a fire here during this time. From 1983 to 1987, K&H Real Estate was located here, with C. M. Huckabee at the owner. After that time, the building became restaurants, including the Big Country Steakhouse, JB’s, Tiffany’s, and was a second location of Double H Family Dining.
In recent years the building was remodeled and reopened as Scotty’s Bistro. |
